Can we please change the title of this thread to "If you use a signature on 2p2, please post here!"

Thanks for posting JB! Your contribution is duly noted and this way I didn't have to wait to notice your sig in the wild to ignore you.

Lee's post was good and is probably the reason a simple name or Regards, Name isn't annoying.

Mocking people also results in massive derailments of the thread in which the mocking occurs.

Obviously this isn't an issue in forums like 4L or BBV, where mocking and derailments are part of the fun and often result in the best threads, but it's much more a problem in forums like NVG.

Nah, people care and sigs are annoying. It just turns out that more is being done than I knew apparently.

My other account is in just fine standing and well respected, I started this one so I could A) post about the forums like here without feeling like a huge nerd and B) share more personal information anonymously like this: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/34...e-her-1179882/

Exactly. I'm glad to learn that more is being done about sigs than I previously thought. Can you share if you warned tompakee or did his signature not cross the line in your eyes? It definitely caused a derail.

I PMed tompakee to ask him to consider not using (or changing) his signature, but I think he already left the FTP thread. And I was very specific in letting him know that he was not in violation of any rules, and that ultimately if he did not want to change his signature he didn't have to.

In my eyes, the signature did not cause the derail. People bitching about the signature in an inappropriate place caused the derail. However, I don't think anyone was infracted, I just deleted a bunch of stuff.

I find it ironic that some of the say people who complain (a lot) about moderator actions and freedom of speech are some of the same people who complained about the signature. Apparently freedom of speech only applies if you personally are not annoyed by it.

That's not aimed at you, OP, just a general observation.

I've run across that tompakee signature a few times and its annoying as hell. Its like there's no separation between his signature and the end of his post, so I get tricked into reading that bulls--t every time.

I think people might appreciate signatures if they were entertaining. -- something like classic movie quotes, especially if they're not the ones usually trotted out.

Of course, the profanity filter hurts. Sophie meant to say seersucker, so that shouldn't count as profanity.

Reading this thread reminded me of a "poem" from a play titled, The Psychoed

As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I wish, I wish he'd go away.

And has become an ingrained habit that just feels totally wrong to break, even though intellectually we know that the rules (on the internet at least) have changed and signatures are no longer considered necessary, and by some at least not even desirable.

Thus, some of us sign posts. Even though most don't.

Having said that, I do see a clear distinction between a simple signature (typed, but still a signature IMHO) with perhaps a "regards", "sincerly yours", or something of that ilk, and those who sign with long verbalizings and/or images. The latter get to be bulky, unnecessarily repetitious, and simply make a forum harder to read.

That's my viewpoint, and thank you for asking!

Lee
A reasonable explanation and viewpoint. I especially like the comment in the last paragraph. Simple signatures are a quirk or an atavistic twitch that at most is mildly esoteric, hardly annoying, and much ado about nothing. Adding more than that however enters into another realm. A curb on that type of activity by posters may be justified depending on intent. Trying to implement such a curb on verbose signatures however will surely be much more difficult than most here realize. Shooting or hanging come to mind but that as yet can’t be done effectively by the exchange of ether waves through the internet.

Perhaps all should consider it a test of stoicism. Those that have none lose out and must suffer horribly; wailing in the darkness, yelling at clouds, eyes bulging from their sockets to the point of exploding, and finally having their minds melt into complete pools of mush. So all in all this is a good thing I think.
