Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

Guess I'm a Luddite. But I'd think if reading white letters on a dark background were easier on the eye and brain, Microsoft Word would have used that format and the printing and newspaper presses of the 20th century before it.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

Printing on a black background uses more resources and in the case of newspapers leaves readers' hands covered in ink. Displaying a website on a black background saves resources. Your comparison is ridiculous

That would be easy. Any reasonably intelligent program would determine there is no good reason to share any posts. So it looks like those buttons are not needed.

The template still seems to be completely broken on mobile. I think it would be a very large mistake to ignore phones, unless we're keeping Tapatalk support (but I think that goes away?)

I'm having the same issue. I just updated my email info here, so I don't know if that will help or if it's too late.

Your reply is ridiculous. Word processing, spreadsheet and other productivity apps along with the overwhelming majority of text-based web pages chose the convention of black lettering over light backgrounds. Why? Because it's easier on the eyes and visual information processing centers of the brain than the converse.

Who wrote anything about covering paper with ink? It's relatively simple to make dark brown paper, no ink required. But book printers from the beginning chose near-white paper and dark lettering.

I wasn't the first poster in this thread to mention preferring dark text against a light background, and I doubt I'll be the last.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

We've been using a light background in written/printed text since ancient times because ink was originally made from soot, which is dark and shows up better on a light background.

It shows up better because dark absorbs light whereas white reflects it and our brain processes silhouettes. I get some people think it looks cool and reverse type certainly has its uses but from a UX perspective this isn't even close to debatable when it comes to content processing and readability.

Also, replace the run-on commas separating the sub-forums with bullet points if we're no longer allowed to simply scroll through them.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

I'm already tilted by having the list of forums on the right instead of on the left, and the gray text on a black background.

IMO, the only visible positive is that the advertisements are more noticeable. That's better for the advertisers, and maybe the owners, but not necessarily the users. But the reason for that may just be that the text of the thread titles is in gray and there is not enough contrast. The contrast of the text of the thread descriptions is even worse. And this issue is even more of a problem if you zoom out to see more titles on a page--the text is too small for the contrast. It's not a problem with the black text on white background because of the increased contrast. And the default text size to too large and causes excessive scrolling, but necessary because of the reduced contrast. The user having to zoom out to see more information on every visit to the site will get old fast.

There doesn't seem to be any advantage in user experience.

One thing I noticed is that when checking for threads where I've previously posted to see if I had responses is harder than it is in the old format. The solid colored star is not that noticeable. The added blue icon now in use is much easier to notice. And this is a feature regular users rely on. Maybe also change its color?

The major forum categories not being expandable is also tilting. Now you have to wait for a page to download to see the list of forums (an issue if internet service is flaky), or scroll down and try to pick off the forum listed in paragraph form, instead of column form.

I made a test post in the new format and was unable to delete it. But I can deleted posts in this old format. I guess a poster can change the name of the post to Delete This Post and remove the content. But the moderators will have more work to do for no benefit to them I can think of.

I'm sure there are other issues that will become apparent when the posters use it. If I discover more, I'll add more of my two cents worth.

having used this site since the early 2000s, I doubt I will regularly return if there isn't a light background/dark text option similar to basically every other major website/communication platform I use on a weekly basis. But this may just be a sign that I've been on this site way too long and need to move on.

From a pure product standpoint, I'd be fascinated to know how much your DAU and MAUs drop after this switch.

The problem is since poker is shutdown, it will be difficult to ascertain how much attrition is due to the software. I think more people are drifting away every day. (I really really hope they are not some of the ones dying too.) Rickroll said after the first Vanilla version was put out a few weeks ago a lot of people already posted goodbyes and left after seeing it.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

I should also add that after using the "slick" skin on here for a little while to test it (because the slick skin is comparable to the dark background Vanilla), it is readable after you get used to it, but only if I zoom the page to 125%. Since I switch back and forth between many different websites the small hassle of having to change the zoom a lot is enough to make me not use the site.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

Haven't tried it on the phone yet but my first impression is that it doesn't look absolutely horrendous like the other one. Congrats! Also, I prefer the links to be on the left side but that's an easy fix.

- Moved quick links to left, shortened the width, made font-size smaller and bold.
- Put quotes in italics and reduced the font size to be the same as the comment.
- Increased width of main content.
- Got rid of fb/twitter bullshit.

Are the avatar rules for Vanilla the same as Vbulletin? 80x80, 250K?

It won't let me even register for the new site...and it won't take this accounts info.

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

The Vanilla site is being shut down again for awhile. When they migrated user information, if you had an account on UBB with a different email address than the one you currently use, it treated them as separate users and there is no way to access the profile with the most current email address.

That issue and some others have to be addressed by Vanilla before there is further discussion regarding design. I do want to thank you for all the feedback so far. There will be a notice posted again when the site is back up.

Are you posting an example of a design you prefer or are you actually able to individually customize for your personal experience?

I just played around with the styling as an example of what I thought looks better, it also matches what you're already doing on this site. If someone really didn't like something on your new site, I guess they could make a chrome extension to over ride the styling if that's what you mean.

P.S. I like the dark theme but it's usually good to also have the ability to toggle to a light theme since some people just absolutely hate it.

As mentioned above, anyone can individually customize their own experience with an extension like Stylish

it seems this can fix almost any design complaint an individual has. is that right?

Re: It's time to look at the Vanilla Forum

I wouldn't recommend suggesting/requiring a chrome extension for people to be happy with your site, lots of potential malware and I certainly won't be downloading it. You can't please everyone but you should take the recommendations and come up with the best solutions/compromise possible. The recommendations I made are no brainers and easy to implement, like who puts a nav bar on the right side? Quotes being larger than the main comment makes it harder to read etc...

Stuff like color scheme you should either have a light and dark theme or go for one theme that is close to this one since people have already become accustomed to it.

No one is going to go through a 3rd party process and invest time and effort into customizing how a forum appears for themselves because they hate the new default, they will just stop using the forum.
