Help! I don't know how to double-quote! Help! I don't know how to double-quote!

So I want to quote this post here to include the message being quoted as well:

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...0&postcount=21

But of course when I click quote it only quotes one message, which totally sucks.

I tried clicking multi-quote but it doesn't do anything.

Help me!

As you might have seen I said in my post, multi-quote doesn't work. I click it and the button turns red but nothing else happens. Then I click quote again, and it just quotes the one message and not what he's replying to, which is no use at all.

Speak English, man!

Still doesn't work. I clicked multi-quote next to the relevant post then scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the thread and typed in my response in the 'post reply' box and clicked to post it, thinking this was what you meant. But it didn't quote anything at all.

Maybe if I try being a bit more verbose. There's two different things here to consider. Either you want to quote multiple posts like this:

Quote:
post1
Quote:
post2
Jim's post

Lets call it flat quoting of multiple posts. This is what the multi-quote feature is for.

But what I think you want to achieve is to quote a post with all the posts this post might have quoted before. Like this:

Quote:
Quote:
post1
post2
Jim's post

Let's call it nested quoting. This is what the old forum software did automatically, but they didn't want this feature in the update for reasons I won't go into here. So the only way to do this know (AFAIK) is to add it manually in your post.

That is not what I meant. If it was I would have posted a screenshot of the quick reply box.

Yes, I want to do a nested quote. I want to quote an 'FYP', though, so if I can't quote them both manually without having to retype the changes the second poster made to the first.

Then you have to do it manually. No need to retype posts though. Just use the multi-quote feature, but cut and paste the posts you want nested in the way I did above.

Yeah, it's going to require a little bit of work in the new software. Normally, I'd multi-quote the OP and the reply and if I wanted to display them nested, I'd just move the /quote tag from the end of the first post to the end of the second. However, when you're quoting a "FYP", you'll also have to go in and make the same changes, or cut-and-paste like Billy suggested.

I think this does raise the question of having nested quotes implemented as an easy point and click type feature. Since far from everybody, unlike myself, spent their teenage years writing HTML code there might be a need for a simple method of doing the old quote everything post.

I agree with the decision to not do this by default btw, but wouldn't adding an easy-to-use way of doing this without it being on by default be a nice middle ground?
