I should have brought this up earlier but I didn't think it would be understood or addressed (or seen by those that might understand the significance), and crypto dialogue has grown a lot even since then. In hindsight I probably should have brought it to the attention of the mods and admins immediately upon Coinpoker's ico.
Coinpoker is just an example but its a good one. In order to buy coinpoker chips you had to buy ethereum. And in order validate your account you had to make a payment with their token CHPs (which also requires etheruem which is used as a fee).
If you aren't familiar with crypto then you will probably perfectly sympathize with the many players that came to the coinpoker thread to ask for support. Many “investors” were crypto newbies which is great. Myself and another posters helped a few people that were quite distressed and it seemed to go ok.
But with crypto there are a lot of exploitable security risks and therefore there are many related scams. In the coinpoker telegram chat there were many complaints that arose because a fake admin was pm'ing posters offering private help, and all they had to do was convince their victim to give their private key up and then any money they had in their wallets was instantly stolen in an irrevocable fashion.
I DID post in the coinpoker 2p2 thread asap to NEVER give your private key to anyone, and the other poster that helped was seeming reputable and did too. Nonetheless without a specific noobie stickied thread explaining these kinds of scams and how to protect yourself, this forum is at a new risk.
And of course those familiar with the emerging crypto threads, understand they are arising in different sections of the forum. So in order to be effective such a security sticky would need to be in multiple sections or these threads will need to be gathered into their own section.
You can't really just put it in the internet poker section because there is a lot talk in the economic sub forum for example. If you moved the crypto related poker site threads to the economic sub, that might be solution to, except the mods there are quite ignorant to the subject of crypto.
So I really think it would be a security leak for 2p2 to not have a dialogue on how to organize this, and it should probably be dealt with asap.
Cheers.
Edit: also I might go around and grab a few knowledgeable respected members, because much like the problem I outline, they might not see this post otherwise, to be able to endorse and contribute to it.
Another relevant point is that, other than a sticky of warnings and general education, you would want a thread in which the help given is public. That way you have someone offer help and then it goes private, and then someone gets bad advice and loses their equity. Rather you would the propriety of the community to get together and offer advice in a public manner so it is scrutinized and therefore good.
I think of this as a built it and it come thing. Securing 2p2 in this manner will bring great wealth to it through the crypto world. Many investors in these crypto poker project are new to poker but they don't have much other use for their new found wealth
Also there is a growing discrepancy in the types of posters and posts being made in the economics (bfi) sub and a distaste by the mods for new crypto posts. But they are relevant distinctions and valuable to the community to make these threads.
At first there was just bitcoin. And when ethereum arose there became people interested in one or the other and so you really needed to threads otherwise you have two distinct groups. And now there are altcoin's and so they have their own thread.
I think we need a beginners thread. And you might want a traders thread that is situated around the crypto threads so the crypto players can oversee it.
And for efficiency and security you also obviously should want mods that know about and are experienced with crypto (btw I am not endorsing myself, I would refuse a position of power
)
I think now is not the time to stifle the growth of this. The new ico's are going to be valuable to the community and it would be nice to have a well organized section in which 2p2 regulars that are newbie to crypto could come to ask question and learn and observe. You also want it organized before it blows up too much...which it is.
