Trolly, you can't be serious. Zizak, wow.

Now lets leave aside use of the word gypsy which is problematic but some old ****er that developed his worldview 40 years ago can possibly be forgiven
The use of an ordinary, non-derogatory word "can possibly be forgiven"? How very big of you, being kind enough to forgive a perfectly normal word and not instantly damn the writer as racist. The high priest of heresy is kind.
Are you listening to yourself? Responses like yours are precisely why people like Zeno should keep offending your sensibilities. Your thought policing views are ridiculous and offensive in themselves, and very dangerous.
By the way, do you think a gypsy would care if I called them a gypsy? How many have you met? It's not even in the slightest sense a slur except in the fevered imaginations of people who live 10,000 miles away from actual gypsies. Why the pointless white knighting? It's not to help gypsies. You want to eradicate all expression of thoughts that are heretical to your religion/tribe, and currently fashionable hair-trigger heresy is racism. That's a rather nasty instinct imo, one that's worse than racism and has harmed far more people. What's more, it doesn't know any bounds. There is always a more subtle heresy to seek out, a stronger punishment to eradicate it. We saw how that played in China and Russia over 50 years. It's a disgusting instinct, and far more disruptive and divisive and time wasting than even the bad expressions of racism.

then the first line in this could be considered edgy, trying to make a point in response to Toothsayer but this becomes less likely when we consider the rest of the post. In which he blindly accepts the racist musings of someone who was apparently better informed than him and has held the view since. His use of vile gypsies is racist and not just some rhetorical device.
Ugh, no, he's describing the view of someone else ("tirade against the vile gypsies"), and how his narrow minded views quickly slipped away in the face of humiliating inexperience. That's a wise and humble man. Racist witch hunting is making you misunderstand the basic structure of a sentence. Zeno is describing the guy's view/the content of his rant, not his own views. Jesus man.
We're getting to a point in the heresy witch hunt where even relaying a conversation makes you a racist (see above), because it "puts racist ideas out there". Then (some of the less enlightened of you are already there) we'll get to a point where associating with people who use the word "gypsy" or vote for a particular person who's against immigration are scum who no one should associate with, let you give the enemy aid and comfort.
You think the path you're going down is healthy? Take a breath and remove the beam from thine own eye.
