It's interesting, because I've been retired for many years and I was always looking for a hobby that I could latch my mind onto for enjoyment. I tried painting, calligraphy, etc., but nothing really took; I could force myself to do it, but it wasn't really fun. I exercise every day, but I needed something different (mental, not physical) to pass the time. After the blog, I finally felt ready to write the book I'd dreamed of (I had a loose idea of how it was going to go for thirty plus years.) and as I began working on it I found that I really enjoyed the process.
The writing/rewriting took just over three years (!), but I still found that it was pleasurable to spend a few hours each day writing and revising. I used a process that I taught to my students where you write from the heart, letting the story come out naturally, trying not to focus on convention, then go back and clean up everything after a short while. I write seven days a week and my day wouldn't be the same if I skipped, but again, I don't need to force myself to do any of it. (My average is around seven hundred words a day, half-proofed.)
