We have one every year, run like Mayo described - only no one opens the gifts until AFTER everyone has picked. If you steal, you're stealing wrapped gifts. People go to great lengths disguising the gift they bring if they think it's really good.

But WTF is with "Yankee Swap"? Odd name, anyone know the origin?

It's on the upper right under where it lists your number of PMs. You have to log out before logging in under a gimmick if you're at work and you're not allowed to run Firefox Portable alongside the UPS-approved IE6 because IT is stuck in 2003. Or so I've heard.
