I can't help but think that there's something wrong with those people who are SAYING they play for a living, not the people who are LISTENING to them.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I didnt expect this topic around, but hey 2+2 is the land of all possibilities.

I really think it ("Why I don't tell people I play poker.") hits us all - players - from time to time.

Here is the context of my own experience:

#Narrow-minded society (ie friends) in general, not to speak about "poker"
#Had to pay rent and have living expenses, no more family to take care of that stuff
#Beginning poker player (and you know what that means)

Here are some classical scenarios:

Scenario 1: Hero tells the truth

Society: What do you do in your spare time?
Hero: Well, I play (and learn) poker.
Society: Poker? Huh.. For real money?
Hero: Yes, but not that high stakes as you might think.
Society: Oh, good for you - it could get really addictive, this gambling thing you know.
Hero: Well, actually its not 100% gambling - there is a skill factor involved..
[Bla.. bla.. bla.. luck vs skill debate..]
Society: (not yet convinced) So, how much do you make?
Hero: (hm... truth or bluff?) Hm..actually not that much, but I will make more one day... stakes are too low and I need to grow a bankroll in order to..
Society: Bankroll??..
Hero: Nevermind.
Society **** Hero.

Scenario 2: Hero keeps for himself

Society: What do you do for a living?
Hero: I work as a computer programmer.
Society: Really? Nice! Where?
Hero: Uhm.. mm.. on the internet, actually Im a freelancer..
Society: Oh, good for you - I heard it pays very well!
Hero: Yes, indeed...
Society integrates Hero.

Scenario 3: Hero goes p(ro)public

Society: What do you do for a living?
Hero: I am a professional poker player.
Society: (doubtful) Uh.. What ? Like.. you play poker? No, I meant a 'real' job... ?
Hero: Yeah, thats my full-time job actually.
Society: W..what? So, you make money? How much?
Hero: Well, at the current stakes I play I make about 1k/day - eh - it depends if Im in the mood actually to play that much, I could make more..
Society: (wtf, stunned) N..nice.
Society worships Hero.

Its funny how things change, right?

Actually, there might be more examples, but in this context we all want to get to #3 for sure, and that is my wish to you also - have a good one!

When ppl ask what you do for a living, why should lying to them be the most logical step? No one else has to lie to people about what they do in order to avoid headaches (well except criminals). So why should those that make their living from poker? (I say all this as someone who doesn't make their living from poker. I have a "normal" job).

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I get mixed reactions about playing, but the one thing I've found is that my nephews and my son's friends all think it's the coolest thing ever...whenever they're at my house while I'm playing, they always stop to watch me for a while. They ask me how much I'm up/down that day, ask about how I keep up with all the tables, how it all works, etc. I have a feeling I'm inspiring a whole new generation of degens.

Hero: Nah for serious

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

lol at these poor IRL peoples....

I get this from people who know i play poker
"have you got a real job yet?"

This from people who just find out
"wow i didnt know that was a real thing how much do you make?"
in response to any amount
"ye but how much did you loose to win that?"

The other night in a nightclub I was chatting to a girl ( /end brag) and she asked wat i did for a living - to which i replied

"im a geography student"

fail on all counts i think...

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I have a new cleaning lady and today she came for the first time. Quickly, she noticed I have some poker items and she liked my "really cool computers" -- there is 1 computer, 2 screens. Then she asked if I played ONLINE POKER. I said yes and asked no further questions, but she proceeded to tell me she plays "lots of online poker" and then told me 10mins worth of bad beat stories while cleaning. Then I said online poker is rigged, she agreed, and went to make my bed.

Wp.

The subject came up around one of my sister's friends recently. She was all like "oh so you play poker online?" and I'm like "yup". She asks if I make any money and I kind of hesitate (I don't really talk about my winnings), before I can actually think of a reply she starts going on about how of course I haven't made anything and how I'll lose all my money and how her brother lost hundreds of pounds to online poker. I just said I'll bear her advice in mind, then gave my sister the money she'd asked to borrow for their taxi. Money from my most recent cashout.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Usually the stuff I get is pretty harmless but said almost every day for a year can sort of build up on your nerves. Like my roommates will say:

"Back on the tables ehh?" every morning whether I'm actually playing or not.
"SHOVE, SHOVE" if they see I'm actually playing a hand.
"Oh, sick graph" Every time I look up a ptr or look at my graph no matter what the graph looks like. There's more that I have probably mentally blocked because I can't think of them right now.

This doesn't look like much but EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR. I learned a long time ago that saying something over and over again is not funny and just gets on peoples nerves but apparently they didn't. Or they like getting on my nerves which is probably part of it. At first I would say something like "ok good one now you can stop saying it every day." That didn't work so now I just ignore it.

Or they'll watch me play and give me stupid advice which can throw off my thinking. This turned into more of a whiny rant than anything . I mean we're all friends but sometimes friends are annoying.
