I imagine there's a "Why I don't ask people who play poker anything related to their job" thread somewhere.

I got this board game for Xmas and I'm pretty sure it'll never be opened...

I used to play that all the time with my family, it's actually pretty fun. There isn't a huge amount of skill involved but it's still entertaining and even kids can get the hang of it.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Do any of you guys get this big feeling of regret when you remember you brought up poker last night while being drunk, or maybe not even brought it up but continued to talking about it when someone else brought it up. And then you think "damn, no im going to be poker [insert name] for them".

The same way I get a feeling of relief when I remember poker never was brought up last night.

But at the same time: When someone else brings up that I play poker and that im winning, and im just "yeah, wateva", and never talk about it with the 3rd person again, I think it makes me look pretty good.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

So at one of the family get togethers they want to play a $1 tourney. Of course I get asked to get the chips and everything put together and I say I really don't want to. They act like it is some sort of addiction (because they are all casino junkies, slots and other ****). Their response is, "come on, you know you want too" Of course I was just hoping to not have to but at this house every time we are going too. I mean they came to my home games from time to time when I had those.

Of course when I bust out 3rd out of 7th, they get a good chuckle because that lets them know (in their minds) that I do just as good as them playing the slots (in other words I am not a winner and I do lose after all)

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I go to the Grey Cup fairly often. We play poker sometimes. One guy has asked me everytime I have seen him in the last 4 years "So have you beat Daniel Negrannanu lately?"
(intentional misspelling the way he pronounces it)
This all stems from a pokerstars promo where they had turbo SNG's for free live and gave away stars gear. I won my SNG and did not play against Daniel Negreanu.
It makes me laugh and he honestly doesn't know how to pronounce Negreanu to this day.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Couple years ago I got a royal flush and took a screen shot of it...It was in like a $6 dollar SNG or something. I showed my mom the screen shot...and told her I busted shortly after though...

She couldn't get over how stupid I was to put over 1500 dollars cash on the table and not quit or stand up or leave the table.

I tried for about 5 minutes to explain that it was a tournament and I didn't really put 1500 dollars on the table before giving up...

"If it's not real why is there a $ sign by it?"
"If it's not real...then why would you waste your time with fake money?"

That was the last SS I showed my mother dealing with poker.

This is seriously the most tilting thing about having to play any home game

I shortened it to... "depends", I didn't have the patients to waste the info.

I don't call that gambling.

Looking at some people's graphs that go consistently and steadily upwards over hundreds of thousands / millions of hands - that's not gambling.

If it is possible to do that, it's not gambling imo.

Rolling dice is gambling. Flipping a coin is gambling. Playing the lottery is gambling.

If you call poker gambling, then almost anything in life can be justified as being gambling.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Am i the only one who gets "he probably lost at poker tonight" when im not 100% polite or tired or something, mostly from a family member that wants to share his/her thoughts when having dinner or something?
And 90% of the time my family bursts out **** laughing and i cant get a chance to explain that i actually won.
They all think poker is the only thing that can piss me off, and they can laugh about it for definitely 5 min.

And a while ago, we were playing the ugly family poker game where i wasnt allowed to raise cause everybody would get a feeling of the game.
I was so close to not participate in this **** awful debacle.
i promise myself to never ever never ever play family poker again.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Poker was brought up at the New Year's Party I went to last night...god I wanted to face palm so hard every time someone mentioned it.

'online is rigged', 'i knew a guy who lost all his money playing poker', 'poker's an addiction', 'ALL IN ALL IN!!' etc

Does gambling have to be neutral EV? Does it have to be negative EV? Or is the definition based on the sample size, and only ceases to be gambling after a certain % confidence level of "winning" or "losing" has been reached?

Play roulette for a million spins with the same bet every time at any casino, and you'll surely (for all practical purposes) lose money. Does that mean it's not gambling?

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Just got laughed at by 3 mates after 3 home sngs - They just couldnt get over that a didnt win a single one of them.

At first I tried to explain them that with only 20bb to start with and 10 minuts (equal 2-3 hands) levels it actually was quite random - I soon just opened a beer instead. FML!
