Been said before of course, but take the $50, come back the next day and tell them you lost. Easy and they'll never want to talk to you about poker again.

Every girls parents but one that found out my life resolves around poker did not turn out well. Dana's parents actually hosted a cash game every week for neighbors and ****, so I purposefully let it slip. I got an invite, left +$230 (almost $100 from her mom), and was not invited back, lol.

In my defense, I WAS on a heater...

that sucks, but cant the poker site track where your bankroll went? if they cashed out its on record and stuff

I was chilling in my dorm, reviewing my graphs/hands on HEM when my roomate looks over my shoulder and says, "DAMN, Is that math homework?!". Just before I was about to explain that it was for poker, I remembered this thread and replied "Yup."

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

For Xmas do your families try to "relate to your interests" by giving you something only because it has the word poker in it? Something that is completely useless to someone who plays seriously.

I got this board game for Xmas and I'm pretty sure it'll never be opened...

After a night at the casino

Dad: So how'd you do?
Me: Made $10.
Dad: (sarcastically) Wow! $10? Nice.
Dad: How'd your buddy do?
Me: He made about $500.
Dad: How does he do it?
Me: *facepalm*

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Person: "So what do you do?"
Me: *Considers making something up for a moment* "I play cards."
Person: "You play cards?"
Me: "Yea poker."
Person: "How much do you make."
Me: "Enough."
Person: "Well how much is enough?"
Me: "Enough to pay the bills."

Conversation is like clockwork each and every time. And sometimes it is followed up with:

Person: "Well how much did you make this month?"

People are so ****ing nosy it gets on my nerves. And 90% of the time when you tell someone you play poker, watch their face. You get the best reactions ever.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Have found this thread pretty amusing, and a lot of it does ring true, but.....

whats with all the complaining? being able to tell people you make a living playing poker is awesome. if you can sell it right, and gloss over the fact it requires replacing real human interaction and sunny days with endless hours as a hermit staring at a computer screen, then ladies love it. it makes you look both intelligent and street wise at the same time. dream result.

and who really cares what the people who instantly consider anyone who plays poker regularly a gambling addict think anyways? if its someone who you do care about, then take the time to explain it to them properly. if you know what youre talking about it will show. if there just an idiot and dont get it, screw them.

personally, i reckon the symbolic value of being a pro poker player, or even just a winning player, is as good as the money you actually make. well almost anyways...

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I remember when I first started out playing poker. I had played for like a few weeks, and was like 16 or so. I asked one of my classmates who had been playing poker for like a half year or so, and he had like 16$ on his account (started by winning 1$ in a freeroll), and was playing nl 10 I think. I asked him if he should not play lower stakes (like NL4, which was the lowest), since he could easily lose all his money playing these stakes. And he answered that by playing these stakes it was easy to win money as well, so the risk of losing his BR was very low... Like the next day he lost his BR, and stopped playing poker (from what I know).

I have a grandfather as well, who have played playmoney on Pokerstars for like a year now. He prob. plays an average of ˝ hour/day, and still is not able to beat the playmoney games... I try to teach him basic poker techniques, like you have to raise this hand because we are dominating our oppenents likely holdings. Often he will agree with me, but still ends up calling....

Above just proves my point that so many people are semi-******ed and just have no logical sense. This is just like all these people who think you should double your bet-sizing when playing at a casino everytime you lose, because this way you will never lose when leaving the casino.
IMO above is a big argument against democracy, why would you let these people make decisions that influence your life?

And more thread-related, most comments I get is like, dont lose all your money by playing poker, and so on... Some times when I am playing like 10-tabling my parents (and other familiy members) become really nervous, because they fear that I am losing money faster this way.

Tell them it depends, then start a lecture about position, relative stack sizes, whether it's cash or tournament (which or course would require explaining that late in a tournament you might play almost anything), talk about the Sklansky-Chubokov hand rankings, etc., etc. They'll be glad to change the subject.
