Your problem is, that you're trying to explain to him that it isn't gambling. It is gambling. You know it's gambling, he knows it's gambling, 99.9999% of the people you ask know poker is gambling. Trying to convince anyone otherwise just makes them think you're addicted and denying the truth.

Focus on explaining that while you are gambling, poker is the one casino game where you can have an edge and where good players can win consistently over the long run. Like flipping a coin with and edge, like the stock market, etc. If you understand how and why that is, you should be able to show him. If he's a 'math' guy, this should be a pretty easy conversation imo.

tell him poker is gambling like investing in the stock market or real estate, etc. you can have good days or bad days, but in the long run smart investing will lead to success.

Actually, i was with a GF with that story... Her dad use to play 5 card draw and made some serious debts... Was quite traumatic period of her life, 'couse she was just a teenager then and she didn't whant to hear about it ever... Anyway she didn't like seeing me playing or when i read stuff about it and maybe a big part of us not beeing together could be that "wall"...

Talk about poker only with my friends that i have made playing poker and on forums... Other ppl - "I gave up on that".... "Here and there, for fun, but quite rare"...

I have found the perfect solution, i now tell ppl that i administrate a database for a website, it requires u to sit behind a computer all day like i do and it sounds extremely boring so ppl wont ask u any questions!

I told my room mate i won a few grand playing poker and now i cant regret it enough.

He owes me money from utility bills and when i bring the subject he says "Dude you have lots of poker money".

Im thinking of a way to make my friends think I lost everything and that I quit for good.

Friend =/= roommate.

My actual friends are supportive, but still i'd prefer for it to be a secret.

But tbh you can't really blame people if they don't get you make a lot of money doing something they consider a past-time.
Like imagine if someone you knew made 20k a month with idunno, fishing or playing with toy trains, people would also be like: yeah well you make enough money doing basically nothing what do you need my 50 bucks for?

Poker is worse cus it has a stigma, most people know someone that lost their lifesavings on gambling and they feel the same about poker. You can't really blame them.

So far I have found that the ppl I care about that are not ******ed all understand I make money playing poker. Even my parents and they hardly ever ask stupid questions anymore.
They understand variance and they understand there is skill involved.

The people I don't really care about I just don't tell. I say I work from home for a website. They usually don't ask cus it sounds boring to them.

Yeah, i guess ppl expect to have some benefits since you have all that poker money. Like it's that easy earning it... Sometimes friends of mine (they are quite indifferent about poker) say something like: "So, dinner is on you? Great, finally we see something of that poker cash you make." It's like a joke, but "somewhere" it isn't if you know what i mean?

Or

Can you give me some bucks so i can give it a shot???
No
Come on, you have blah blah blah... then i start taliking about BR and they start calling me cheap bastard so we end up sitting him/them on one/two SnG tables and that's how we settle most of situations.

I feel they see that money = playmoney but will never sit down at one... Just cash. Sick....

lol, what a way to get a knot in your panties just because they play some modified rules in a home game.
just play the game, and if you're such a grand player you should be able to adjust accordingly and have some fun.
the same rules apply to all players so get over yourself, barbie.

a few years ago i played in a $5 stt with a friend and some people i had never played with before. when it got to me and someone else hu he insisted that the button was bb. i just went along with it. it really aint such a big deal and i wouldnt have made a scene like restlys did. altho i still enjoyed his story because it is always funny when people are wrong about something yet insist that they are right.

Sorry, you're doing this thread wrong - you're meant to post about times you were socially inappropriate and then you're meant to blame it on other people.

how about the old "if I give you $20 can you transfer me money online?" I agreed the first couple of times until I started getting calls at home from people saying "Hey can you send me another 10? I'll give you the money when I see you"

I've been using investment banker with a mix of equity analyst (serious). It just goes way over girls' heads and they don't bother to ask questions which makes it mad convenient.

Plus if you're picking up a girl at the bar, you really don't want to sit there and make the conversation all about yourself by trying to explain to her what you do.
I've told plenty of girls in the past and most find it cool/interesting. First time it was ever a problem.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I cringe whenever there is something in the media about people getting into serious difficulties with gambling debt because I know that I'm inevitably going to get flack from my parents despite the fact that I've repeatedly told them that I've only deposited once and play micro stakes. (Besides the people in these stories are usually complete degenerates who've pissed their money away on horses and on-line roulette)

This past weekend.....

One of my best friend's fiance: "So, I was thinking about my wedding budget....if I give you $5,000 how long before you can turn it into $10,000"

Me: <facepalm> "you don't want to do that"

The best is in B&M rooms, topic comes up about online poker between two old farts and it inevitably turns into the rigged topic. The eyes are usually on me, the young guy to say something about it, I have learned to keep my mouth shut. Another argument you cant win.

LOL @ this! My daughter was home schooled from 2nd through 8th grade, then went to public high school. She graduated 3rd in her class with a 4.11. Multiple times she was voted into "queen" for dances. She held positions on student council for 3 of her 4 years in high school. People who barely know us constantly compliment us and her on what an amazing person she is.

Homeschooling, when done correctly, is exactly the opposite of child abuse.
