Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

when i used to be a teacher i told one of my coworkers after a particularly good weekend at the table and upon hearing about another budget cut i should just quit to play full time since i make more money playing than teaching (not hard to do, sadly).
a couple days later i get a call on my cellphone from a woman asking how i'd like to pay for my $1k seat in an upcoming charity dinner; she had gotten my name from the coworker who had told her i would be someone interested in contributing to their charity.
i asked my coworker about it and she made some snarky comment about how since i was rolling in cash the least i could do was contribute to her charity.
....
since i've gone pro i just tell people i'm a cashier at 7/11. nobody is ever interested in that so u never have to worry about pesky follow-up questions.

Wow. This would tilt the living **** out of me. I would be tempted to respond with something like "Oh, [coworker] said she was going to donate $1k and I thought it'd be nice to help her match that for the charity, but then she bailed for some reason." Obviously, I wouldn't shell out a cent even if the coworker got guilted into dropping $1k.

It seemed like they really were being nice to her and wanted her to do the right thing. Her yearly salary was said to be 30k as a teacher. They offered her...

$110,000

She declined, picked the wrong box, and the show ended with the credits running and her crying. I thought it was the most golden momen the show ever had.

It was pretty damn degen too.
Here's an amazing video of an even bigger dumbass...

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

thread wins.

My dad(full on arab, immigrant) and mom hated the game once they knew I was in it full swing. I remember one time being picked up at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles (after being dropped off their by my mom ) after playing NONSTOP for like 5 days at 200$ max buy in. I made a lot of money that week.

I get in the car, I start counting my money and my mom just says...."so where did you get all that money! Are you stealing?! You only came here with 8 100$ bills. How did you make so much money?!" Keep in mind this is 200 NL at a casino.

She tells my dad, my uncles etc. My dad hated poker and told me to quit, RIGHT AWay. I wonder why they are so adamant against making >8$/hr????

Very next week my uncle came up to me and says "Nephew, dont gamble. YOu will lose your entire life and everything good in it". HMmmmmmmmmmm

(turns out my uncle is a former blackjack player who built 10k into 100k in like 2 months .....then he lost all 100k in like one week ...and proceeds to go into debt/divorce wife/leave kids///////he loses EVERYTHING GOOD IN HIS LIFE>>>>>>and steals money FROM MY PARENTS to go to the casino and lose. True story)

my response to my uncle "blackjack is not poker."

Fast forward to modern day, my dad plays in a home game every week. It is 1:15 am west coast now,,,, and truth be told ...he is STILL AT HIS HOME GAME!!!!! (after 6+hrs).

My dad's poker week is HANDS DOWN is best day of the week. He comes home from work with a smile and my mom asks"why you so happy... (before she can even finish)..... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh its poker nite! GL honey!"

What a turnaround!!!! I couldn't be happier about their current perception of the game. My dad even came up to me today, first time ever, and said "son, im proud of what you do. You're successful and you're happy and thats cool."

This is hope for all those people surrounded by people who HATE the game and/ or dont understand it. There is hope for you. Maybe someday your parents/relatives/friends will understand what you do and why.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I wanted to add that there is probably no one in the world whose parents were so adamantly against their son becoming a "professional gambler." I cannot imagine going through all of the emotional pain of dealing with the disapproval of friends and family AGAIN.

I had really tough times (during losing periods, early on in my career especially) in which it became virually impossible to convince them (or even another poker player) that I was going to be a long term winner.

I mean i really had to prove to them , on several different grounds, that I won (without question) and EVEN THEN i had to do it for a long time before they became convinced that I was not getting lucky 25 days/month and unlucky the other 5.

The #1 question people ask me when I tell them I play poker for a living is:

"Do you actually make money?" Hilarious. I smile every time.

I told 1 person on my dorm floor that i played poker and made around $30/hour

Now alot of people on my floor want me to teach them so they can get 'easy money'

and theres always the inevitable,"dude, if i give you some money can you run that up and give me half"

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

posting again in this thread just to say what a great thread this is and to say that so many stories are familiar and i hate telling anyone that i play poker semiprofessionally.

You can just tell that the majority of people just think your a joke/degen gambler and even when you tell them how much you've earned over the past few years i get the feeling that most just don't believe you.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Me and bro both play poker and our uncle is always very interested on how we are doing (a middle aged drunkard who's living with his dad and only calls us when he's drunk.. so pretty often)
So the other day he called me and surprisingly the topic went on to poker and i said im doing ok and bro's good too, then asks, so did you heard about how i made a few hundred for your bro by stacking some degen, i was like wtf is this guy talking, so after the chat i called my bro and said wtf did you let him play on your account, he said no, but he did watch me play for like 5 minutes when they visited my place. I see.

After that he asked me if i could play his 100$ to 1000$. And his response when i said that with that 100$ i could play in games that it would take months to turn it into a 1000$ was like, wtf you guys have won a lot more than that in a shorter time! Then went onto telling about a story when he lost 20k$ in one hand when he was young (yeah sure!)

Everytime he calls me now he's suggesting about various staking deals where he gives me something between 50-200$ and wants 10x back. And when i refuse he acts like im a selfish prick.

Monkey tilts the **** out of me.

Most standard answers:

"I'm quite good myself. I have 1.3 million playchips on Facebook"

"But how much did you lose?"

"Like real money, that you can cash out???"

"Do you have a good pokerface??"

"But online you can't see the player, then it's all luck, right?"

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

My math professor and another professor were talking about counting cards. The other professor left and we continued the conversation and somehow I brought up poker. I mention I play online and he goes on talking about how he had KK on a AKKxx board and saying that the other guy should have folded pocket aces because he obviously had pocket kings. (on facebook ldo) I quickly changed the subject.
