Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Great thread BTW...

Some of the one's I have copped, probably already covered but anyway...

- Someone wanted to stake me to play the smallest 2/3 game at Burswood in Australia by giving me $10 and thus wanted all my profits... (min buy-in is 50)

- Am told often that it is impossible to be a winning player...

- Told my flatmate that I play regularly there. Now constantly being asked for loans if I come home late with a smile, and if Im saddened "hahaha your a degen and wasting your life...

- I let it slip accidently that I play a fair bit one night at the casino. Woman overhears me and that she says she will own my soul tonight, as she is a balla pub poker player. She describes to me that 22 should never be played as I should know that my pocket 2's were behind everything preflop. Orbit later I get 22 (she held AK) and should have folded pre if not on the flop. (she effectively min-raised pre and checked a flop with AK for TPTK.) I spike a 2 on the turn, we get it in on that street, she rivers another king for trips vs my boat and celebrates... I tell her that no, she loses and that MHIG. She takes it to the dealer, then to the pit boss. She mentions live poker is rigged which is why the guys win all the time and the girls get unlucky...

- Limit poker is unbeatable, cant bluff the fish and that AA never wins...

- Teach me to run better...

- Asked my opinion many a times how to play a hand like JJ or AK, with the asker not caring for minor details such as stacks, position, action to you etc... just whether to call or shove...

- Told repeatly that raising PF is very bad, it gives away you have a hand, so you should never raise your good hands...

Probably already all covered but yeah... back to the action...

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I live with some relatives, they know I've only put in a few hundred lifetime,
and they know I've withdrawn at least 4K+ to pay for repairs at the house

every single time i say I had a losing day they get all concerned and say "you're still up overall though right?!?!?"

I say I got hitnrun several times buy someone winning 20bb off me and leaving
them: "but you're winning right?"

Villain: "So...ah i hear you have been gambling for large sums of money?"

Hero: "Yeah thats true, but i have a system in place to ensure I only risk losing tiny portions at a time."

Villain: "Haha good one. Have you considered like..therapy or something?

Life bad beat.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Nice bump Majin. Yeah, a garph of you actually winning might do better than "I have a system".

I used to date a girl who refused to believe I could win significantly long-term. It had something to do with Bon Jovi losing 20k in a hand and being a whiny ***** about it. I got fed up with that pretty quick.

Since I'm on workman's comp/going to be unemployed as soon as I'm off it, I actually put my work number as my g/f's cell phone and gave my job as "Statistical Analyst" to T-Mobile today. Not only did that count as "employed" but I got a 15% discount somehow.

I did a survey about problem gambling.

To paraphrase:

"On a scale from 1 to 10, how addicted are you?"

"0, but I wish I was 10, 'cause then I wouldn't be so lazy about playing"

just yesterday my buddy's brother comes over im grinding 12 tables...he starts telling me about how his friend went to vegas to become a professional gambler. asking me if me and his brother ever 'cheat' by 'counting cards'. and that we could probably make a lot more that way.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I made the mistake of telling my fiance I deposited $25. Her mother calls my phone telling me I'm addicted and that I shouldn't gamble. Meanwhile her relatives have scratch ticket parties all the time.

hell, if I didn't love her so much, I could be a free man. lol.

People who don't play poker don't understand (or even want to) exactly how it happens or what the risks are, bankroll requirements, etc.

I don't see why it should be any different from any other profession...when it comes to income, don't ask, don't tell. You say that you are "pretty open" about your wins/losses now because the amounts aren't life-changing, but, really, it's none of anyone's business. It will only start to make them feel bad about themselves if you make more than they do, or feel superior if they make more at their dumb job.

Why on earth wouldnt he tell them? it's just money, and I know atleast I would not care if my girlfriend or parent or friend made 100 times less or 100 times more than me shooting pool or playing poker or saving children in africa. I dont see why economics should be such a personal matter. In norway every year it is publicly posted on the internet how much everyone payed in taxes/made/and how big of a "fortune" they have, and I for one dont feel this is a big deal at all.

This definitely sucks, considering there are a lot of people who would use this information maliciously, and attempt to steal from those with considerable wealth.
