Got a friend telling me that using tracking software is cheating, because it gives you an edge over people that don't use it. Blew my mind

I was walking towards my locker and asked to play in MTT Fri afternoon to support some lame club at my school and kids who need food or something that I have. I quickly replied "I dont know how to play." Then I was told there was a 1-hr practice MTT before the BIG one ($20) started. My idiot friend was with me and told the girl that I play pokers and $20 wasnt worth my time since the prizes included: feeling good about yourself for helping out kids/lame club, and a $25 gift card for the winner (gift card is for a new book). So I was compelled to donate $10 into the jar for kids so I wouldnt look like a jerk.

If poker is gambling, then so's the bully taking ur lunch moneyz.

I went to Chicago with my GF and met up with her dad from Ohio and his brother. While they came back wasted from the bar one night they see I have some pokerz happening on my laptop. The dad instantly grills me for about 20 minutes straight, "do you make money" "how much do you lose" and so forth.

He starts wanting to play on my account and I tell him no. He then gets pissed and starts playing the "oh I'm not good enough card". Eventually he rambles on about some Korean bitch he wants to marry from the bar and the poker topic is dropped.

I'm done saying I play poker to anyone that isn't a degen.

I still think one of the best ones is when you tell them you play poker and they reply well if I give you money will you play for me. It amazes me that people are this stupid to ask this question over and over

I don't think like that he looks like a jerk at all.

I think that everyone should be an organ donor. I think that everyone that can afford it should contribute to other worthy causes. I do NOT think that anyone should be shamed into giving, or be pressured in any other way to do so.

I once worked for a major company that was big into the United Way. It was a competitive thing, trying to look good to the other business leaders that were on the United Way Committee. I agree with some of the United Way causes, and with some others I dsagree. The company "asked" for us to contibute.

We all got in a room, and everyone had to fill out a slip, and had to put in an amount, even if it was $0. Then we had to give the slip to the plant manager's secretary, who looked over each one. I thought that I was being brave by putting $0, and if looks could kill, I would have died on the spot when I handed over my slip.

If I had it to do over again, I would have gone farther. I was young, new at my employer, and I thought I was being pretty bold as it was.

If that was to happen to me today, I would have written a letter to the company, stating that the pressure they were putting on was way out of line. At least some of the United Way charities, such as Planned Parenthood, would certainly be a problem for someone with pro-life religious beliefs, not to mention the border-line extortion in the way this whole thing was handled.

I think the people who automatically judge the mom in this case are being naive.

There are an absolute slew of degenerate gamblers who really do have this marvelous ability to talk about the $500 they won yesterday without mentioning the $1,000 they dropped later or the $2,000 they lost today. It's sad, but so common that if you've met enough of these people, you too would automatically respond to "I won $X yesterday" with "how much did you lose?" Moms, and people in general, who respond this way are probably doing so out of experience.

If you want to get them off your back, respond with something like, "Mom, I understand you're concerned, but I'm talking about my net winnings, not my gross winnings, and I've risk-adjusted my play so that it's highly unlikely I'll ever go broke, much less owe any money to anyone."

^^ same here
luckily they trust me enough not to ask "but how much did you lose ?"
but its hard to explain the concept of building a bankroll to someone who doesnt play.

Trying to explain to my parents what poker is about, even showed my father how it is done right in front of his eyes, only to be called a degenerate gambler 2 months afterwards

I love this thread.

It took me probably almost 4 years to convince my fiance(my girlfriend back then) that poker wasn't gambling. I finally sat her down and reviewed my lifetime graphs (zoomed over life it looks like a pretty straight line), pokerev (to show where luck came into play) and then explain that its kind of like when a casino deals blackjack - in the short term they have swings, but over time they win because they have the mathematical edge.

She was still a little disapproving, but then I cashed in FPP's for a couple TV's and started cashing out somewhat regularly to help pay for the wedding. Now that poker is being budgeted to pay for about half the wedding costs (cue doomswitch imo) she is much more supportive

The irony is that she was telling her mom how much I make from poker (its not much, I'm a microgrinder) and of course she asked - "do you think he have a gambling problem???"
