Just be sure to tell people that you dropped 2k yesterday or whatever if they ask you about it. I had an IM Bball game on Sunday at 10:15, but went deep in the Sunday Million and eventually lost 20k in equity when KK<AQ ai pre. The next day one of my good friends asked me what I won (he knew I played poker and thats why I wasn't there since my roommate told him I was playing) and I told him I lost 20k. Since he's not a dumbass and is an econ major it was pretty easy to explain that the equity mattered as much as if I lost a $20k pot.

The most annoying gambling related topic of conversation for me is when people try to convince me that you can beat roulette by doubling the bet each time

Donk: "Yea but youd never lose ten times in a row. Think how unlikely that is."
Me: *Kapow*

I swear I have this conversation like once a month. Tilts the hell out of me.
I had this at work once (and I work for a poker company) - some guy was explaining his roulette betting system, I have to turn away from PC to talk to him, I type to someone on MSN "hang on a minute, someone's explaining their roulette system to me".

Turn back a minute later, guy follows my gaze, reply on MSN was "lol, what an idiot". Whoops.

My dad who knows I am playing poker was using an analogy to some rpg he's playing. Apparently he had been attacked and killed by someone much stronger than him.

The conversation went something like...

Dad: "So yeah, when you're playing games you're only like playing for fun, and what's the fun in crushing someone when they don't stand a chance?"

Me: "Uhuh." (Talking while playing, not really listening.)

Dad: "I mean, you surely wouldn't think it was fun to play versus completely ******ed people who have no idea what they're doing?"

Me: "Uhh..."

Dad: "There isn't any competition in that really, is there?"

Me: "That's kinda the way you make money in poker, by playing people who play worse than you."

Dad: "But if they have no idea what they're doing you might as well rob them..."

Me: "...yeah, 'cept that's illegal...."

I'm now pretending I'm broke if my dad asks me about poker.

Except in poker no one is holding a gun to their heads making them play against you. Your opponents are voluntarily playing the game and putting money in the pot against you. If they are idiots and regularly bet on marginal hands then that is their problem - in fact you are doing them a favour by helping them learn some harsh facts in life (like if they are going to play poker like a ****** against good players then they are going to lose money). You can't be expected to spend your valuable time giving out important life lessons without some financial compensation now can you?

I've been playing some tables for about half an hour and I'm up a bit when this kid from down the hall walks into the room and sees me playing

Kid: "How much are you up?"
Me: "I havn't been playing for that long, so not much yet."
Kid: "So do you always win?"
Me: "No, but I win a lot more than I lose."
Kid: "How do you win so much?"
Me: "It's not that I'm really good, it's just that these people are really bad and don't know how to actually play."
Kid: *Throws down $20 bill* "Send me $20, I want to play."

I have never seen this kind of a reaction before but I hope to god I see it many more times.

*bumping an old thread*

The convo usually goes like this when I tell someone I play poker.

"So how much have you lost so far?"

"umm, well, I have won about $1000 this week"

"Yeah but how much have you lost in total?"

"Umm, I haven't, I'm up *something* this month"

"Haha, I bet you're going to be broke by next month, gambl0r!"

"me: ............"

A sample poker conversation with my sisters:

Them: How much money have you lost total?
Me: Well, I'm probably up 20-25k over my entire poker "career"
Them: Well, how much did you lose overall to make that?
Me: Does it matter? I've played a ton, I probably had to win 100K and lose 75K to end up 25K up, that's just how poker works.
Them: Why do you lose so much?

And someone mentioned counting cards earlier, one of my first poker conversations with my dad, who has an MBA from Harvard:

Him: You play poker right?
Me: Yeah.
Him: Are you pretty good?
Me: I do alright, most people play really bad.
Him: What do you do, like count cards?

Talking about poker with people who have never played and don't understand the game is impossible......... I've given up trying.

Some people aren't interested in listening to what you have to say, they've made their mind up that it's degen and no-one could possibly make any money out of it.

LOL, although very entertaining, that's what this thread seems to be turning into. I find it hard to believe that every single one of you is winning online, no offense but some of you are full of it.

OMG at people relating their friends' systems for beating roulette by always doubling their bet. I thought that was a localized phenomenon, centered around my own ******ed friends. I guess I'm just naive to that sort of thing. Some forms of stupidity, it would appear, are viral.

The one sit-down I had with a couple of them to try to explain why they were wrong was one of the more frustrating experiences of my life. I thought that people with degrees in electrical engineering, who landed jobs out of college that make them more than the average American household a year, who design and implement electronics for some of the most advanced manufacturing machines on the planet, and who understand the mathematics behind Laplace and Fourier transforms, would be more than qualified to understand the concept behind our little friend "expected value." Apparently I was wrong.

Eventually I had to devolve it down to, "Okay, I give up, you're right. You've figured it out. A scheme so fiendishly clever that the thousands of geniuses, hustlers, scammers, and cheaters, that have tried to figure out how to beat the casinos at their rigged games failed to think of it. This is your ticket to millions. I'm sure the casinos will never know what hit them. Good luck."

Thankfully most of my friends "get it".
