Some of the responses in this thread are shocking.. Apparently most of you have terrible friends or meet idiots on the regular.. Must b miserable. No wonder so many of the posters seem to have such low self esteem, you're surrounded by morons..

A lot of that depends on where you live. I could buy a decent 3-bedroom house on my block for 25K. I'm renting now and don't need to buy a house, because eventually I'll be inheriting one from a relative who is 92 years old.

To someone from San Franciso or Manhattan, a 25K house sounds like I'm living in the ghetto.

Hmm, that song is in my head now, haven't thought about it for many years.

Awesome!! Good on u mate! U deserve to do whatever u like.

I know when I retire from playing poker in a couple of decades, I'm going to spend my retirement playing poker and golf.. I can't wait!

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Went to my friends wedding party on Saturday night and met this attractive chick. We talked for a couple of minutes and she asked what i do. I told her I'm a poker player and she said, "I bet a lot of people laugh when you tell them that".

I was repulsed by her. The level of ignorance can be astounding at times but that is generally true with most of the human population regarding the majority of topics out there. Especially those topics that are vastly misunderstood by the general public.

Explaining anything to unaware people is a waste of time. The tough part is when we try to help our parents, girlfriends/friends understand. It can be disheartening because most are so unaware of what poker even is. Their limited experience of poker is a movie where some guy bets his car keys in a hand of 5 card. Lol. Most see it as hustlers and cheats trying to angle shoot each other.

My experience of poker has been nothing like that. I didn't grow up playing during the douchebag era of poker that so many old school players are proud to represent. I don't associate with scumbaf;h's and never have. Poker has been an awesome and honest experience for me since day 1. I don't back players and I was never backed. I don't gamble on sports, roulette, blackjack or any other rubbish for anything more than 20$ a couple of times a year. I feel like I've been really lucky to enjoy the great aspects of poker in the last decade and avoid most of the crap.

That being said, my poker career has still been wrought with absurd variance and having to overcome obstacles in order to further my game and solidify personal growth. Basically the same as most players who don't accept failure as an option. The difference is we love that challenge of getting better and becoming great at a game which is so mentally stimulating. It's just tough to get that across to people who are already conditioned with so many pre conceived notions...

Seriously, wtf?. Unless I'm misreading the tone, that's like in the bottom 10% of offensive things someone could say. Sounds almost like she's experienced similar ignorance about some interest of hers, and she's commiserating with him.

Haha.. She was def not commiserating.. I guess repulsed was the wrong choice of words. It was definitely more about the tone and ridicule from someone who doesn't even know what poker is.. Blah wateva yes guys I am a lovely person..

In unpopulated agriculture areas wear the population is decreasing. Generally in towns under 500 and more then 2 hours from major cities. I knew a person that bought a house in SD for $12k.

Of course, you have to remember that a 'livable' house has a much different meaning then it does in the suburbs. I helped put in a bathtub and was able to hook up the drain through a hole in the side of the house and then we nailed a old piece of plywood over the hole.

There are dozens of houses in the ghetto for 25k. As long as you don't mind the smell of Meth and occasional gun shots.

BTW.. Great Thread.

I live in a city of 40k with a metro area of about 100k. It's not a great neighborhood, but it's no ghetto. There are a lot of rentals, and renters don't care the same way that owners do. There are a fair number of stupid people doing stupid stuff at 2 A.M. By stupid stuff I mean getting drunk and having loud arguments with neighbors, and the occasional fistfight.

That said, there are no major crime problems. No one selling drugs on the corner, or trying to recruit the neighborhood kids into a gang. I'm comfortable walking a mile in any direction, by myself, day or night. There is certainly crime in Muskegon, but probably no more than most cities of similar size.

There was a crime on my block that made national news, even getting a mention from Jimmy Kimmel.

The victims of that crime were interviewed:

Yeah, I love it when someone plays the addiction card.

Poker is my job. I sometimes play poker six days a week and there are some who think think that makes me a gambling addict.

Yo-Yo Ma, living the glamorous life of a famous traveling musician, has been known to sit in his hotel room practicing scales for six hours. I doubt that anyone calls him a music addict.
