Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

The don't educate people at the tables thing is probably wrong. People learn to enjoy the game once they realise there is depth to it. They play more and they tell their friends. That is what got poker big in the first place.

I'm pretty sure that's not what people mean when they say "don't educate people at the tables".

I'm pretty sure they mean "don't educate them about higher level thinking and concepts", not about the fundamental skill vs luck argument.

Ah, but telling people that there are higher level concepts is evidence of skill vs. luck.

I'm pretty sure you can convince someone that poker is a game of skill without getting into implied odds and opponent range percentages.

99% of the time. they ask me .
-But how much you lost?
or
-What if you lose all?

"Cash games are easy I just won a 5$ re-buy, now this is what i call skills. Not you 4-5$ average profit for h. And you waste time to study when the game is only about luck." wtf ...

My guess is that she's actually more concerned that you're being a degenerate / hanging out with degens / doing casino "stuff" / banging hookers / etc. She probably wants you to spend more quality time with her. You're playing poker at 3:00 AM, what do you expect her to think? Start playing during the daytime hours. You won't win as much, but you'll still get your poker fix, and you'll keep her happy.

Advice: Use some of your poker money to buy her something nice. Tell her that she's your "partner", and you'll be sharing your winnings with her (even though she's obviously not investing any $).
My grandfather used to give half of his poker winnings to my grandmother every year. Sometimes he would buy her an expensive watch, or something else that old ladies like.

I've taken a similar approach with my own relationship. Once my girlfriend realized that me playing poker = $$$ = nice dinners and presents, she started encouraging me to play.
great advice, shower your girl in presents cause shes a controlling cnt. some people are really desperate for the V i guess.
your grandfather is what id refer to as a sucker and the same goes for you. getting validation for your job/hobby by giving your gf money/gifts etc. LOLLLL

your gf is encouraging you to play because it benefits her. thats inherently selfish and you seem to think its a good thing? she should encourage you do to what you love because you love it.

better advice: dump that ***** and find someone who loves you for who you are, gives you the freedom you deserve and doesnt care about getting expensive gifts. or stay whipped in a controlling relationship and buy your "freedom" from the person you love. get some f balls ffs.

what do you mean by ONLY playing poker? like its your only job or its all you do 24-7? guess what, jobs arent the only way to contribute to society. and poker is very rewarding if you are good enough and balance your life OUTSIDE your work.

anyway, id just be very selective who i tell about my job. usually younger and/or intelligent people get the concept and wont bug you with moronic questions.

When I started playing poker my wife would wake up at 1 A.M. and say, "You're still playing poker?" That changed the day I final-tabled a $3.30 tournament (5th of 3,200) for $384. Now that she's seeing the money, she wakes up at 2 A.M. and says, "You're not done playing poker already are you?"

Oh, you play poker? Do you count cards?

No, it doesn't work like that. Counting cards isn't applicable to poker.

What!?! You're an idiot! You can't possibly be a poker player - much less a good one! And they dismiss you or anything you say.

That's always fun

That was a while ago, but starting with zero poker knowledge and not much more money (I learned to play poker from library books and watching the WPT), I thought it was pretty cool--but I wasn't half as excited as my wife.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I watched "Live at the Masters" last night to see how Tiger Woods finished. There was a commerical where a man and a woman were talking. The guy asked, "What do you do?" and she started talking about something like manipulating human genes and saving mankind.

Then she asked the guy what he did, and he said, "I play golf." She said, "No, really, what do you do?"

Villain: What do you do for a living?
Hero: Poker

Villain: No, seriuosly!
Hero: Poker

Villain: Ok, how long have u been playing poker for?
Hero: 3 years

Villain: Wow, thats a long time. Do you make any money on poker?
Hero: No

Villain: What? So why do you play then?
Hero: I let u figuare that out.

Villain: What? So what do you live on?
Hero: Poker, food and water

Villain: I dont understand, cant you tell me something about it?
Hero: I think there are more interessting things to talk about then work.
Hero: Like whats your passions and dreams?
Hero: What do you want to accomplish, do, see, experience, learn, master before you die?

...end of discussion!
(IMO theres no point in trying to "win them over". Just tell them what they want to hear and let them figuare out to error in the equation themselves.)

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I haven't got a car ATM, just passed my test (18 yrs old) and started playing poker about 8 months ago and every time i go to the casino i take a taxi, it's always a different driver so time after time i tell them i play poker and don't go to play roulette, blackjack etc... They ask me the rules in full, how much do i win/ how much do i lose... Biggest win/biggest loss...

zzzzzzzzzzz from now on i'm telling them i'm a degen and gamble thousands on roulette, it's probably easier to explain.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I always get hassled by my friends when I stay in to play tourneys. Convo always goes something like this:

Friend: Let's go drink blablabla
Me: Can't go out just yet, I'm still playing some tournaments online
Friend: Seriously?
Me: Yeah, I'm sorry. Will prolly go out as soon as it's over tho
Friend: How long is this gonna take?
Me: I don't know, that kinda depends on how far I go..
Friend: Meet at X's place in an hour?

I always feel like a degenerate convincing them I have to finish tourneys, and obv I never bink one right before I go out
