Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

So what you're saying is, a game being played millions of times everyday all over the world for the last few decades(I've shorterned the time frame, to be more fair to you as you seem like a moron) can't have an amazingly high odds outcome?
In the last few months alone I've missed 2 goes at turning £12 into £708588. When I go to the local casino with friends I always play roulette with them. I pick the same 12 numbers and triple up if I win, stay the same if I lose. I cash out on the 5th go if I make it that far, for £2916. The 2 goes I'm talking about, my numbers came up for the next 5 spins after I had cashed out. I just haven't got the balls to carry on.
Next time you go to the casino ask the roulette dealer what they have seen at the tables. You will be amazed

Yes, I am saying it is much more likely you are making it up than that specific one in 100 quintillion event happened. I also think you're lying in your second paragraph about getting close to £700k or whatever you're claiming now. YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT YOUR ROULETTE SYSTEM MAN. This is not the sign of a credible poster.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I never said I have got close to £700k. It was all if's and buts. When I use my car, I always drive the same. When I eat, I always eat the same. When I wake up I always follow the same routine. Why wouldn't someone who plays roulette with friends always play the same way. Hardy any of my friends play poker, so when they come to the casino to see me I always hang about with them at one of the tables.
Really have no idea why I let myself get into a conversation online about this. I'll be in Vegas from Friday for 3 months. So if you want to talk about it more, please come and meet me. Pm for details.

Oh you live in London, not USA. Well i'll be opening a pawn brokers/buy back scheme shop in Southend on sea, Essex when I come back. I would be happy enough to meet up for a night at a London casino if you would like.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

the best story i have to offer was when i was playing in school while lesson on my laptop
i played like plo 1/2 hu with buy ins 200 obv. 2tables the other guy was really weak
and my seat neighbour was thinking he is able to play poker( he hardly knows all the rules starting to ask me why i have 4 cards LOL).
with every bet of my opponent he said ship it he is bluffing its play money everybody is bluffing there all the time
not realising i just made like 1k in cash if i would have told him he wouldn't have believed me anyways so i let him think its play money

The most stupid person I have ever spoke to is an old guy in a cafe. he was talking to the owner of the cafe, who I also know, about playing cards when he was younger. He was saying how he used to travel around England, playing in pool halls. I butted in, telling him I play online. He then went into a rant about how it's not real poker and that's it's really bad for the game. I then tried to explain the 'moneymaker' effect and how it was really amazing for the game. He then just blanked me and started talking about roulette. So I said I had seen the number 13, 12 times in a row at a casino. Just stood up, called me a lair and walked out. Still blanks me to this day.
Once I saw the same number hit twice in a row. It was fricken nuts.

There's more to that cliche!!!

"Hey man, what if I give you $300 of my money for you to double it, can you do that?"

2 years later...

"hey, man, I want to take you up on your offer!"
"but didn't you win a lot of money playing poker?"
"I did, but I blew my money on this and that and then I ran bad, so now I am broke"
"ohhhh.... so now you're broke and you actually need money, so you want me to give you $300 so that you can play poker and double it for me?"
"YES!!!"
"ohhhh.... well.... uhm... the thing is... uhm... my dog ate my money... so, uhm... I don't have $300... ask me again in 2 months..."

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Girls don't shy away from me when I say I play a lot of poker. I don't mind letting pretty girls flirt/talk badly abut poker. Guys I ignore (even my dad and bro who I got into the game).

I don't tell ANYONE I'm a 'pro' though. I'm currently on vacation from my job working for a cruise line (they always think I'm a freaking waiter, NO I'm NOT w waiter wtf do i look indian?). It's technically the truth.
Depending on who I am talking to I *might* mention playing a lot of poker to help pay the bills/ i like to go play poker with my spare time cause I'm not allowed on the ship etc.

I refuse to tell my (very very poor) roommates how well I did/how much I lost as I think on any given night I have more on the table than their entire net worth. They go crazy when I told them how much I won.lost so I stopped and just say "yea it was a good night."

Re: Why I only tell people some people I play poker.

Maybe I'm just really fortunate to have good, intelligent friends, but almost everybody I tell about my poker playing can understand how I am profitable with only 3-10 minutes of explanation (obviously some people have a better understanding of poker, whereas other people really need to have things like edges, variance, and "long-term profitability" explained). Granted, I pretty much only tell people I care about (people I'm going to see and hang out with on a regular basis), but I've never had anybody combat me on the fact that I can make a living it at (and I'm not baller either, with my $30-40 hourly ) The worst reaction I get is probably the upbeat, optimistic skepticism. "Hey, if it's working for you, I'm happy for you!" sort of thing.

I totally understand how this is, man. It's better not to share results with people outside of the poker world (unless it's a big MTT score )

I don't think the posts in this thread can be divided according to who has intelligent friends. Rather that it can be divided into who is socially competent or not and thus have socially competent friends. It's always nice to blame somebody else.

Woman makes final table of a 50-60 man tournament at the G.

"I reckon Poker is 5% skill and 95% luck."

This is why I don't talk to local players about poker.
