At the poker table ya pretty much or something along the lines of investing. In other settings i just tell the truth and hope that i get to post the response in this thread.

I don't understand why people get so upset with people asking "dumb" questions. Ofcourse it might sting a bit to be seen as a degen by some people. If they do, try to explain, if they act like rocks who don't want to understand in any way, then cut the conversation and continue doing your thing.

I'm not playing pro or anything but I make ok pocketmoney playing. My dad had been an gambling addict for years and looks up to my disciplined thinking related to poker and has always been supportive and never says things like "you have to quit, you know what happened to me". I immediately explained to him my thinking and how it works when he watched me play poker, and he understands as far as i know. I'm glad he's not as addicted he was before. And he doesnt want to deposit any money what so ever.

Mom mom on the other hand had problems understanding and thought i was just another degen. She didn't want to understand at first, and I was ok with it, just said that I play for sums I afford to loose and witch wont affect my mood in a major way. Not long ago I showed her some graphs and tried to explain everything in a easy way, and she is now surprisingly supportive and asks how it's going and so on, if I'm losing she's like "ok, that's sad, but It'll turn around".

If you really want someone to understand, give em time, don't push them to understand. If they really want to understand they will come to you and ask how it works, then you explain it to them.

Acutally, if you're in the US, you sort of are. If you quit a "regular" job and become self-employed, you would be considered under US employment statistics as no longer looking for work.

Of course, the IRS doesn't care whether or not you have a regular job. Whether you're a CEO, a poker player, a chimney sweep, or a criminal, the IRS wants their cut.

Yeah its pointless telling people about poker. It's like trying to explain to a dog how a t.v works, they just don't get it. They also give you that tilted head confused look like a dog does.

During a tournament break in a recent charity room $30 donkament, one of the younger players was asked by a nonplaying friend how much he made playing these tournaments. He proudly said, Well, I figured out it and I'm making about minimum wage."

The friend looked at him strangely, and the player said, "Hey, it keeps me from having to work at McDonalds."

It's hard to argue with that.

No offense, but it doesn't sound like you actually "pay" for your own studies, maybe a small part at most.

Telling people you play poker for a living is a lose-lose situation. Even worse than the GTFO look from girls, is when you get the "I love poker too" answer from guys. They will tell you endless stories about poker. Boring, same **** bad beats donkaments stories that bore you do death. Do not do it. Simple as that. Make up a story, or tell them your studying =)

Also I have this same problem, for some reason I only talk about my losses if at all so I keep getting questions like "so you think you're up overall?". ugh.
I simply do NOT believe that you have 20k+ posts on 2p2 and didnt know what degen was.

The guys I used to work with would ask the same 2 questions, everyday.
1) so did you win last night? That was always followed by. So lunch is on you then? They could never understand that money wasn't spending money, nor did they ever offer to buy me lunch if I said I lost.

The most stupid person I have ever spoke to is an old guy in a cafe. he was talking to the owner of the cafe, who I also know, about playing cards when he was younger. He was saying how he used to travel around England, playing in pool halls. I butted in, telling him I play online. He then went into a rant about how it's not real poker and that's it's really bad for the game. I then tried to explain the 'moneymaker' effect and how it was really amazing for the game. He then just blanked me and started talking about roulette. So I said I had seen the number 13, 12 times in a row at a casino. Just stood up, called me a lair and walked out. Still blanks me to this day.

Yeh, but... You are. Unless that was some kind of weird roulette joke. 1/37 ^ 11 is about one in 100 quintillion. That isn't quite how the odds actually work (should be 1 minus 36/37 to the power of 11 I think?) but it's basically never happening.

So we have three possibilities:

1) Something 1/1*10^17 happened
2) You saw a rigged roulette wheel
3) A guy on the internet is making stuff up

I'm pretty happy to settle on 3) as most likely occurence. Don't get me wrong, I think 80% of the posts in this thread are stupid. It's just that yours was stupid in a new way.
