Well I don't tell people mainly because they don't understand it anyways and I don't like to brag all that much. My family knows but my mother flat out refuses to accept that poker is anything but luck, even when I showed her nanonokos graph and asked if that can be only luck she was like "Uh...Yes!".
It's quite funny when she always tells me "that's so much money for you" and I just nod and think "lolz I flip coins worth 4x that every day".

just got this:

I play poker
and you get the money?

or to a girl

dont you work?

No. Yes. I play poker

that doesn't count

yet it does

no it doesn't. Poker is gaming, not working. Work mostly isn't fun and you don't do it by choice

sucks for them. sometimes I don't have fun either when I'm playing like crap or getting my aces cracked too often. Gotta take a break then. But I have to make an effort to win. So it's work.

alright, I'm silent now.

I'm getting paid for playing a video game.

awesome, I'd like that too.

What a sad, defeatist attitude. Although it describes my current job pretty well, lol.

Both my parents fortunately have been very understanding of it except my father still insists that I get a real job for the work experience even though I make roughly the same amount as him (which is less because I receive no benefits or anything but hopefully I'll be moving up soon ).

Anyways my mom is a hardcore slot degen and we were going to the casino one night (she asked me if I wanted to go at 1 am on a Monday night and the casino is like a 2 hour drive from where we live lol) so I decided yeah sure I'll donk around at some 1/2. Anyways, we went there I gave my mom $500 to go play some slots with (lol she loses it all playing quarter slots over the course of 3 hours) but I ended up running well and made 3 BI at 1/2 so a little net profit there. The next day she asked me to teach her some poker so I was like alright we'll just start off with limit then and you can play the 1/2 game on my account. I gave her a super basic starting hand chart and touched briefly on hands to valuebet (obviously no way were we going to get into opponent tendencies or anything in that short of amount of time) so I told her if she had AQ and the flop came A72 to just bet unless you got raised on any street but try to see a showdown and stuff like that (obviously she was going to lose first time but whatever the experience would help a little bit since she knows nothing about poker).

I sweat her for like an hour and go to my friends house and come back like 3 hours later. She managed to make like 120 or something (and I'm like ??????????????? rungood mom?) so I go through the hands on HEM so we could analyze them. I go through the beginning part of the session where I was basically dictating her and tried to explain my reasoning on some of the bigger pots etc. Then I start to get into the session where I had left and mfw my mom is a huge degen. I saw her raise/cap 82s preflop, cap a 672r, cap a T turn and JUST call on the 9 river. The guy ended up having a set of sevens or something but lmfao I lol'd so hard and she justified it by saying "YEAH WELL THESE GUYS WERE PLAYING ABSOLUTE GARBAGE HANDS SO I STARTED TOO" so I proceeded to explain that that is exactly one of the many reasons why I make money at poker. Anyways needless to say we did this again later but she just ends up going into maniac mode everytime I would walk away (she ended up losing like 150 BB the 2nd time or something) and she just lost interest in it afterwards.

Also as a side note, my dad is concerned for my safety (even though I play 99% of the time online) and he's always like "MAKE SURE THESE GUYS DUNNO WHO YOU ARE OR THEY WILL **** YOU UP IF YOU PISS THEM OFF OR TAKE TOO MUCH OF THEIR MONEY"

Cuz everyone thinks its 100% luck.

I tell people though if they ask except for my grandparents (they'd seriously die if they knew due to religious reasons).

If they ask isn't it risky? I just say let's compare salaries come years end and we'll find out how much risky pays off.

The line with staking somebody for 5% of the roll is often used, but it might worse it is the other way around.

"Hey can you give me 10$ so I can turn it into 0$ for you?"
Yeah because somehow I don't can do this on my own.

So I go to a bar the next days after the score and a couple of people run into me congrulating me and were like "Ohh man and I did beat you Headsup once". I was like "lol samplesize" they then proceedrf to tell me how good they are and that they don`t like onlinepoker and liveplayers are much better than onlineplayers etc.
I started drinking then, again someone talked to me taking out his iphone showing me Screenshots of badbeats I only thought "C`mon u mother****in fish, I`m here to drink and want to have a good time and don´t want to talk about mother****in poker and especially I`m not interested in seeing your ****in badbeats"
He showed me a couple hands and told me that it was Cashgame I totally saw that those were SNG hands(Ldo he was playing NL2k, I srsly wanted to punch him in the face when he tried to convince me that it was NL2k). Also later that night about 10 people asked me for coaching, it was so ****in annoying.
I had very similar things happen to me when I won a decent amount of money. A lot of people I knew in my town either asked me for drinks on my nights out or they were saying they are better poker players than me! If that is the case then why have I won a lot more money than them? Hmmm

started talking about online poker, then i heard "well how can you afford to play everyday?" not gonna talk about it again.

i tried to explain to my mom that i have a small edge at the micro stakes tables. but i need to put in volume for that edge to mean anything cause i need to play through the variance. she feels the more hands you play the more chance of you losing everything. in the end all it comes down to is that they dont feel that you can win in this game long term. you can show that you're winning after a million hands, but they dont care. to them a million hands is not the long run, to them no amount of hands can ever be the long run. you play a casino game = you lose.

you cant teach old dogs new tricks, that is so true. you can consistenly rise through the ranks, played millions of hands, and in the end they still have this mentality that somehow you can still lose everything overnight. i tried explaining thats never gonna happen because of BR management. but the problem is they dont listen, they ignore all the logic and only hear what they've been told their whole lives. poker = gambling = everyone lose

Yeah pretty much this x10000000000000000000000000000

Its amazing how irrational people are when it comes to gambling and money risks in general; obviously its well-known that there are some highly intelligent, but just delusional people who think that they can beat 8-deck blackjack etc. and consistently lose money but people fail to realise just how irrational people can be going the other way!

The paranoia and outright head-in-the-sand attitude that you get from so many people when it comes to Poker really is shocking! No matter how many graphs and whatnot that I show my mother, she refuses to even let me explain to her the rules of the game. I try and explain that I'm a good poker player like I'm a good chess player and at the simplest level, win more than I lose, but its no good.

Sometimes I have to stop myself being really rude and saying something dreadful because its such a stupid attitude and very frustrating.

Oh and the "how do you afford/where do you get the money from" questions are so true!

my biggest problem is picking up women, after a bit of conversation
"what do you do for a living?"
me: "I play poker"
then she walks away

"if I give you $100 can you double it for me?". I am sure this has been mentioned before.

"so how much do you net in every month?". I tell them it varies, some months I lose, some months I win, some months I am close to zero. "But what is your average percentage return from what you deposit?".

And my favorite:

One day when I was in Niagara Falls on vacation with a group of people, I decided to play some small stakes (1/2 NL) just for the fun of it because there was nothing else to do that early in the morning while everyone else was sleeping. Now I usually play 500 NL and high stakes tourneys and S&G's. Variance smiled on me that day as I got set over set, AK > QQ, and KK AI on QJT vs QT (hit K). Since everyone was not fully stacked, I only ended up making $350.

When my group found out they were like "wow that could cover the hotel expenses for the trip!" and "look everyone, he got lucky today, this means dinner's on him!" or "you should share the good fortune!"

I almost felt like saying "why don't you share your next paycheck with me?"

Seeing as I always play poker, and post the odd win here and there, one of my mates decided to play one of the same tourneys I did. He outlasted but didn't cash either, but because he lasted longer than me, he was somehow under the impression he was better than me. I couldn't even be bothered to put him straight - just laughed it off and carried on with life.

And that "If i give you x-amount of money, can you double it for me?"... i get that too, how do these people think poker works? do they not think i have my own money to begin with?

The worst for me is when people watch you play and comment on it - like a standard AI pre my AK < QQ... "You take the game this seriously and you put all your money in with just AK... wow dude..."

It's like I want to defend my actions but I don't want to get into it cause in the end I'd for sure end up sounding like an arrogant douche - it's just lose/lose. I'm just gonna only grind under my bed with the door locked in the dark
