Which is actually a really good monthly income in my country. Go back to your cave playing nosebleeds with durrrrr and ivey please

Anybody discussing how their parents/girlfriend don't understand what they do during their free time just don't get it. Yeah, it's only natural for ignorant people to wonder why you spend hours playing in front of a computer. They just can't SEE why you're doing it, because there is NOTHING to see. You just don't make any money playing microstakes. You know it, they know it, yet you try and argue with them how poker is a game of skill.
Ridiculous.

If any of you microstakes grinders (omg my mom told me to cash it out before i lose it all LOLOLOL !) made any decent amount of money playing poker, then your family would understand WHY you're doing it. You guys DO look like degen spending 6hrs a day playing poker and not making any money off of it. Be realistic.

I can assure you that all higher stakes players making good money at poker have NO PROBLEM dealing with their family. Your income is often bigger than theirs, they get to see everything you buy for yourself and how poker helps you have a much better lifestyle. They realize you just don't need their financial support anymore. What can they say ?

It's important to not associate microstakes grinders, who only play poker for a few bucks, and "real" poker players who can actually make a living off poker. That's two very different worlds. Be realistic about your situation. Don't act like you're great poker players because you know a lot more than a random guy. If you don't have any numbers to back it up, there's just no point getting into an argument. People need proofs. If you don't give them one, they'll always think you're a jerk (and once again, it's only NATURAL for them to think so)

When you DO make money out of poker, the only tricky question your friends have is "wow, you're always spending so much money on whatever you want, how can you afford that?"
The answers to that question are numerous, and it's very easy to get away with it if you don't wanna go into the poker discussion.

Answering any question about how much you make at poker is ridiculous. Tell them you make thousands, they're just not gonna believe you. Tell them you make a few hundreds, they're gonna think it's not gonna last, at best.
You can only discuss that with your closer friends, when they can SEE for themselves what kinda lifestyle you have.

Microstakes grinders, keep in mind the game you're playing will never get you anywhere in life. You should just consider it a hobby, a past time that SOMETIMES makes you some money. As such, don't ever consider talking about it to people as if it were any different. Keep it simple, and you'll be fine.
Don't get the hate.

This is actually pretty accurate.

If you are a successful poker player you will have things that make you appear successful, and your attitude towards money/life will make it obvious that you are not short on money. If you're grinding the micros then it's different.

I tend to group people in some of the below categories, feel free to add.

1) The Gambler - This guys played a bit of blackjack and roulette in his time. He's lost a bit of money, he's won a few times. Luckily he managed to 'get over the gambling habit' and will tend to express both acceptance and pity.

2) High Intelligence - These will not talk down to you and won't try to tell you about something they know nothing about. Will express interest and ask for finer details. These people also tend to be interested in making money (eg, some will dabble in ebay trading or something that provides a small secondary income).

3) Low Intelligence - Won't necessarily talk down to you but will sometimes think they know more than you. Probably wouldn't be able to understand poker concepts anyway. Best to tell them it's all luck but also fun so they dump some money on a site.

4) Ignorant - generally the most tilting. Notice I put 'high' intelligence as number 2. I have a view that most poker players are very intelligent. You will get reasonably intelligent people who will think they know more than you and speak to you like an idiot. At the same time they'll choose to ignore and be ignorant to anything you tell them that's contrary to their mis-guided preconceptions.

5) Star Player - this guy's played a few home games so 'obviously' knows a fair bit about poker. They know the hand rankings and have made a few bluffs but ultimately think it's still 'mainly luck' and will have no concept of BRM, Variance, EV, etc etc.

6) The Expert - has a friend who used to have a gambling habit or lost some money playing pokerz once. Therefore they have 'first hand' experience of how damaging my 'problem' is. Sometimes you will get someone who's AA lost to 22 preflop once - their proof that it's all luck obviously.

I don't wanna say to anyone I play poker ever again. Non of my family members or friends play poker, they don't even know the rules of poker! I'm sick of the questions, like "how much did you lose today?" "upswing or downsing?" Everyone thinks I'm addicted, I'm gambling and will lose all my money just because I play 1-2 hours a day. They're sort of right, because I'm a losing player(due to tilt), I can't show them profit, but I'm down about 1k lifetime, which is not that much. I could deposit a few k, and win it back in no time if I played some mid stakes game, but I know I could also lose more with a bad run so I'm not gonna try.
I try not to talk about poker to anyone. It's just hard sometimes when I excited about something.

What's so funny about that? I sad I'm losing because of tilt! I have 10-15 winnig days in a row quite often, but I lose everything when I suffer too many bad beats in one session. I played a few hundred hands at 100 and 200nl and I'm up at those stakes several buy ins!! So you think it's impossible to me to deposit 10k, play 600nl and win 1k??
It could be the same what I often do at the micros. For example I play 5nl lose 2 buy ins in one hour, then I sit to a 50nl table and win it back in 5 minutes. I also sad I won't do this because I KNOW I COULD LOSE MORE. I could run into AA with KK, and I don't wanna risk money at higher stakes.
Off topic so stfu, end of discussion.

If you're thinking like this, either:

1. You don't understand variance and proper bankroll management, and you need to do some studying in those areas.

2. You're too undisciplined to play poker. Even though you know you're not bankrolled to play higher, you do it anyway.

3. You suck at poker (which could be fixed, if you admit it and set aside time for study every week).

4. Related to item 1, it's very clear that you have no concept of what long-term means. Look at the phrases that you use in your post. Everything that I've underlined just screams I AM A SHORT-TERM THINKER:

I have 10-15 winning days in a row
too many bad beats in one session
I've played a few hundred hands at 100 and 200nl
lose 2 buy ins in one hour
win it back in 5 minutes

When you can start thinking in terms of thousands of hands instead of hundreds, and when you think about sessions and months instead of minutes and hours, you'll be on the right track. Of course, points 1-4 all work together. If you're not bankrolled properly for your level, then you can't think in terms of months when your money won't last a month.

Afer 5 years of playing online, and having encountered numerous ludicrous responses from mainly complete strangers, along with a few friends, i have finally decided to "stop telling people I play poker"

I only commented in a thread on gambling, mainly about the Grand National, on a music forum, that i don't gamble at all now, but have played online poker successfully for several years.

I even offered advice for anybody who play's a little themselves......

" Yeah, but it's immoral.

For every penny you win there's some sucker gonna go without food tonight, some child gonna go without somebody spending their last penny in the vain hope of trying to re coup what they've already lost.

For every winner there's a helluva lot more losers.

Say nothing about the evil Mr William Hill types at the top of the chain.........****s.

Gambling is a sickening and disgusting business, luring desperate people in with a false sense of hope, the lottery included, and then taking their last pennies off them without a care in the world.

Do you have no scrupples?"

I then pointed out that the vast majority of people who casually partake in gambling are not "desperate people" and that he is making ill informed judgements on a subject (poker) he knows nothing about.....

" You make me sick with your pathetic defence of one of the filthiest schemes ever to grace the planet. You may as well defend other closely linked dirty businesses, like drug peddling and the sex trade.
Pay taxes on your 'habit" do ya.
I've seen every second corner round where I live turned into a bookies, so the , 'occassionaly having a flutter, know what I'm doing man' can go and worship.

Virtually every punter to walk in or out of those churches have a few things in common.
They all reek of desperation and have a furtive if not blind moronic expreession on their brainwashed mugs, usually can o' cheap lager in hand.
Look in the mirror, recognise it.
Oh no, of course not, you're a winner, your the one who takes all their losses and calls it hard earned honest cash.
You make me sick to the point of despair."

I just agree with everything people say.

Even my close friends say stupid stuff about poker/gambling and I generally agree even though what they say is completely wrong because I try my hardest not to act like a know it all.

One of my closest friends told me Daniel Negreanu was in the top 5 poker players in the world. I just said no and moved on.

Just agree -- it saves headches.

Well besides the ranting at the end he does have a point about the immoral aspect of it. Not like it doesn't happen with the degens we just accept that among the people we take money from are people that cannot afford to lose it

Why are you trying to educate the fish on a gambling forum though?

My girlfriend just didn't understand poker at all. She didn't really care what I did with my time away from her, but she didn't see why I would waste it playing some game online, and she didn't understand how I made money from it consistently, if it was just "gambling".

So I gave her this analogy: let's say I hold up number behind my back between 1 and 10. If you give me $5, you can try to guess the number. If you're right, I'll give you $55. If you're wrong, I keep the money. Would you take that bet? She responded, "of course not, I'm going to lose 9 times out of 10". Of course I facepalmed. Some people really just don't get it.

She is now my ex-girlfriend by the way. Not because of that discussion though....

thats the prove , people are really reaterded about this. Something almost the same happened to me a week ago during a MATH2 test on my college. 2 out of 4 questions in the small test are 4 points answers and the remaining 2 are 8 points worth. There are only 5 possible answers in each question, both for 8 and 4 points. Also, if you pick wrong answer, you lose always only 1 point.
So, you always have to try the 8 point answer even if you have no clue what the correct one is. It is just always +EV!! My friend friend left all the answers empty...,,I had no idea and I didnt wanna risk it." he said.....

i was like wtf?!?!?!?!?!?
