Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Ppl that don't play poker or bet money on other stuff always view players in a negative way.

If they think u lose money, ur obv the degenerate the gambler and will always be broke. If u somehow prove u make money at poker, then u become the unscrupulous greedy bastard that feed on other ppl's disgrace and addiction\gambling problems.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

From my personal experience its just the best to tell the truth!!! I am a winning player but I dont win that much. I am still at college so I still have some time to improve. For example when a family member comes and asks how much I lost in poker last month (have the feeling to punch in his face) I dont bother to explain that I actually win online. My answers are smth like:

,,Well, to bad, last month I paid 600 dollars (rake) to PS just to be able to play there and lost hundreds against other players. ,,

Somebody feel sorry, someone just gives me a malicious face and walks away. Not many people around me, especially family members would be able to cope with the fact that I win online. I tell the truth, but the just the part of it. Thats enough for them. I tell the full story only to my closest friends.

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I recently moved to a new school to start my phd in math. Most of the other students know I play. It would be hard for them not to since I grind out my iron man points if my office. After the initial wave of simple questions, "is that legal?", whats your biggest win/loss?" "what do you mean rakeback?" which I politely answered, everyone has settled into just treating it as normal. If somebody has a question about a course we have together, I turn off auto register on table ninja and when I am down to a few turbos I answer the question. Nobody has warned me that I will eventually go bust. Instead when my colleagues with teaching obligations go teach, I play poker for about the same amount of time. Professors have been pretty receptive to it, asking if I am planning on trying to do doctoral work related to gambling. Periodically, someone will watch for a few minutes, ask a question or two about how HEM works or why I decided to call or fold then go back to grading papers. I guess I'm just lucky to be surrounded by mathematicians who understand variance and sample size.

[QUOTE=king_nothing_;21879542]

The fact that it's a fairly normal question does not mean it's an appropriate question. Normal != appropriate.

QUOTE]

If youre willing to talk about what you do and why you play..why isnt the question appropriate in conversation? When youre talking to someone else that has a different profession (college professor, cpa, physical therapist etc. etc.) of course you might not find it appropriate to ask how much they make... but depending on the variables and doing a little research you can guesstimate how much theyre making if youre that interested to know. With poker players, you could could be making thousands a week, losing hundreds a day, killing the nosebleeds etc etc...every poker player has different results each year and no player is the same as another. So when on the subject of you playing poker for a living, I think its completely appropriate and you shouldn't get offended. Maybe you just dont like to be reminded of your results and the reality that youre a losing player...

So it's appropriate to ask anyone their income if it's not possible to accurately guesstimate it? Wow, that's flawless logic right there. So if someone tells me they run a website, run a business, sell things on eBay, or do any other thing which I'm not able to guesstimate their income from, it would be perfectly appropriate to ask them what their income is? Give me a break.

They ask me the question after I tell them I play poker for a living. You remind of the video on YouTube in which the poker player is talking to a completely clueless person.

What do you do for a living?
-- I play poker for a living.
Well, do you actually make any money?
-- Well, yes of course I make money. If I didn't make money it certainly wouldn't be much of a ****ing living now, would it?

lol.

Like I said above, there are plenty of other professions which people can make a wide range of different amounts of money in. Is it appropriate to ask all those people what their income is too? Great logic.

Quote:

lmao. No. I already explained quite thoroughly why I don't like the question, and it has nothing to do with the amount I make. I'm quite satisfied with my income. There are plenty of people on this forum who know I'm a winning player. I'm not going to sit here and post graphs or the like just to satisfy a random poor poster. If I did, it wouldn't surprise me if you followed up with "but how much did you lose?"

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

my older brother started getting into poker a few months ago... I havent put any real volume in over the last year or so due to college/studying for LSATs but he talked me into driving to AC to screw around nd play some 200nl on my day off the other day.. he ran rediculously hot and went up a few buy ins and i got stacked twice getting it in as a huge favorite... Now he's educating me on the finer points of "small ball" and how its a bad idea to get the money in anytime prior to the river in 1/2, because you can get sucked out on

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

So I work about 50 hours a week and I try to grind out 10-15k hands a month for extra income + I enjoy the challenge (I'm a competitive person). My girlfriend, who is smart and very open about most things cannot seem to get her head around poker not being gambling in the traditional sense. Its pretty funny/annoying because I will go into my office and shut the door and let her know I can't be disturbed for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon or a weeknight where we don't have plans etc.

So last weekend she interupts my session for like the 3rd time in a row and I say

"I can't concentrate and make plans with you at the same time"

her: "you care more about poker blah blah" being dramatic

me: "look its hard work and I need to concentrate and when I don't concentrate, it costs me a lot of money"

her: "well fine whatever, but don't call it work. Its not work." (tilt)

She sits there, watches me ship a small pot

her: "fine, you're buying me new boots with that pot you just won". (lol)

1) buy dusty schmidt's book
2) have her read the chapter written by his long-time girlfriend on poker + relationships
3) profit

Re: Why I don't tell people I play poker.

Today at a friendly micro-home game I played in. We were talking about online poker. One guy says:

"I don't like to play SnGos, you can't make money in those, because there are so many donks. Than one donk will get it in bad against another donk and than one of the donks will double up and when donks have a lot of chips they just call all your raises and suck out on the river. I prefer Cash games."

Me: "Yup, no money in SnGos, nobody is solid, obv."
