That's actually not totally unreasonable...even some players consider using a HUD to be cheating (or at least an unfair advantage). I could completely understand how a noob would think of it as such.

WTF

almost everyone who has asked me all of the boring poker questions (what's the most you've made in a day?...) also ask this one particular question that really confuses me. and that question is "so do you play against the same players a lot?"

anyone else get this? confuses me, i dont know why theyre interested in this, nor what they are getting at. but tons of people have asked me this specific question.

yeah i get this a lot too, they figure there are sooo many people playing online so they don't know just how big the player pool might be. not sure how the answer helps them though either

I didn't read the whole thread (lol) but here's an idea.

Person:"How much did you lose? [random lol gamblor stuff]"

you: (doesn't explain anything) "wait, I'll show you something interesting on the lnternet by chance"

then show this thread
person realizes that he has no idea

how's that?

edit: i can understand why they react like that tho. I'd react the same if I had no idea

Just won a donkament for 4k, I was really happy so I told my roommate. He then proceeded to tell everyone on my floor.. sigh.. the next 3 days people either came to my door asking for money, or the "hey, if I give you $10, could you run it up to like $1000 for me? I mean it shouldn't take you too long!"

The thing that consistently gets on my nerves is, despite the fact that it's widely regarded as being inappropriate to ask someone how much money they make, most people have absolutely no problem asking me how much money I make playing poker after I've told them that I do it for a living. And no, the fact that it annoys me has nothing to with me being embarrassed about my income. I make more than most people I know. It's just inappropriate. I have to choose between:

a) Answering their question and then feeling like a boastful ***hole

or

b) Refusing to answer their question, which will likely lead them to believe that I either don't make much money or none at all

Super.

ya, i hate this too. i usually just say "i do well" and leave it at that. but im tempted to start saying how much i make and immediately asking them how much they make.

Yeah, I say this sometimes too. A lot of times they'll just respond with "well how much???" Then I say "you want a number?" in a tone which should suggest to them that they're asking an inappropriate Goddamn question, but of course they immediately say "yes", so then I just tell them.

I'm tempted to do this as well. The next time someone who I'm comfortable enough with to not care if I piss them off a bit (friend from high school I haven't seen in awhile or something) asks me that question, I might try that out.

Why do I have to pay taxes?
Do I have to pay taxes on my poker winnings?
What if I don't know how much I won?
What if I don't keep any records?
Will they find out if I don't declare my poker income?
I understand they can track what I do online, but it's OK if I don't tell them what I win in a casino, right?
Can I move to another country to avoid paying taxes? (Yes, that one actually comes up frequently.)

By the way, for US players that might not know, the answer to these questions is as follows:

ALL income is taxable, whether it's a paycheck, poker winings, the lottery, or cash income for a music gig. Even illegal income is taxable--the IRS doesn't care what you did, they just want their cut. If you doubt that, Google "Al Capone" and "tax evasion".

And no, leaving the country won't work, US citizens have to declare income earned in a foreign country.

All questions about this topic should go to the Poker Legislation forum, you will find tax threads there. Or you can PM me if you want.

I've had this and from what I can gather, they believe that if you're playing the same people "all the time" then those people are cheating, thus you're a fool for playing against a bunch of people who are cheating.

Also, my mother constantly sends me these random job postings every few days. "Oh look, there is this great office job that's paying $12/hour (lol), maybe you should apply?"
Then when she found out that my wife is pregnant, she said, "Well, I guess it's time to settle down and get a job."

I've gotten the whole "offer me money to play with and they get a share of the winnings" a few times for various petty amounts.

Like having 50 dollars gives them some kind of leverage over me.

I don't know what kind of response they expect, but I always just say "I already have 50 dollars."

But I think next time I'm going to say, "What a brilliant idea. With my poker expertise and your 50 dollars we'll be unstoppable!" then just stack it off in 1 hand of 200NL.
