Some time ago when I won a small MTT, I had like 300$ in my poker account. So I was kinda proud and I told my dad I have 300$ in my account. and so every weekend from then when he visited me (my parents are divorced) he keeps telling me stories how my uncles friend lost everything he had playing roulette and the same is going to happen to me.
He refuses to believe people can actually make money playing poker and he thinks that ''house always wins not the players, they are just exchanging money to each other''
Then one time when we get in a little argue about this I showed him some guy graph where he had won 10k$ in a month. He stares at the graph for a while and then says ''Yea I know these kind of people. They go around sited advertising poker and making people believe they can make money playing poker''

I have played in a friends 'home game' $10 tournament before, and it slipped that I played online (I forget how, but I think it came up that my friend played online, and they may have asked me). They asked if I did well to which I responded "yeah" and then drilled me for a few minutes how much I've made. I refused probably around 10 times before they shut up. Situations like these are really awkward, and it almost makes me mad because people don't consider the position you are put in while they drill you. It's like asking someone how much they make for a living, but they throw that out the window cause apparently you got lucky to win that money. And that'll piss you off cause they don't respect the work you've put into it. My mistake for telling people though, never will again.

Then there's the parents. Although I am 22 I have spent the summers at home, either taking additional classes locally for college credit or working, so my parents are around me. Basically they think its horrible that I win money playing poker, my mom roots against me all the time, I think just so she can say "I told you so". My parents think gambling absorbs my life, like I am a degenerate, and that I can easily lose everything (I play 2 hrs a day, I have friends, I play paintball, my GPA at a tough engineering school is HIGH). They have incredible nerve because they do not understand how careful I am with bankroll management and would never allow this to happen. Most importantly though, it pisses me off how they will never understand what I've learned from poker and why I am stronger because of it. Everything I say to them translates into "I am a degenerate for having interest in this", so there is never a possible way to show them I have taken something valuable out of the experience. FRUSTRATING. Like honestly, is my free time spent better playing video games and watching TV? I just can't wait to win a big poker tournament on TV one day (I probably won't, but you never know, I work hard), and I will thank my few friends that have supported me, and give absolutely no thanks to my parents.

I really began to understand that talking about poker with anyone that does not play consistently or play often at least is an utter waste of time. They don't get it, on so many levels, and plenty of people will JUDGE you for playing cards. They think you are a degenerate loser who can't stop his gambling urges. They don't see it as a competitive game with skill, they see it as chance, lottery, luck. They don't even accept the fact that some people play because it is interesting to them or mentally challenging. Don't make the mistake of imagining that people will respect you for what you've won and think you earned it. If anything, they'll think you are really lucky and probably stupid.

All in all, the lessons I've learned:

1) never hint that you are a successful player
2) never tell anyone over the age of 30 that you play
3) don't brag about anything you've won, ever, to anyone, player or not

One of my step-aunts, I guess you could call her, swears up and down that the checks poker sites send to you ALWAYS bounce. She has no evidence of this, and I've told her that I've cashed checks from poker sites with no problems at all, but she straight up tells me I'm lying.

I don't talk to my step-family anymore.

Thank you for that input, 3 post. So glad you decided to make an account just to rant about this thread. If we suck so much, why do you read?

Didn't bother with it...I hate getting arguments about these things.
I don't see a reason to disprove people that think dis way o.O

lol 50+%...If the game is more than 50% luck how could ne1 make a consistent living at it...lol -_-
Hm interresting

I think poker is also 50% luck. This means in the long run you will win as much as you loose since its 50% luck. So in the long run this gives $0.

The other 50% is skill so if your good at it you will make more then $0 and if you suck less

I friend that used to play poker with some others in college but they all played "play money" told me poker was very easy because he would just put his "money" when he had the best hand and everyone just payed him off.
and he also says that I will lose all my money depositing into this sites because I won't be able to get my money back if I ever still have anything in my account.
So sad, I can't talk to anyone about poker this is very sad, nobody understand or tries to understand, just the ones that really want to learn about it and have their minds open that poker is not a "go broke because it's luck; you will become a gamble and lose all your money playing; this sites are just trying to get your money because you are a fool" only this type of persons I can talk but there are very rare persons like this

Do you guys ever get your friends trying to get you to pay for **** because of your winnings? I'm not a baller at all but my friends always try to get me to buy something we need for the apartment etc just because I make some money playing poker. Then when I refuse to pay for it by myself, they're like "BUT DUDE YOU WON 2K LAST WEEK." Well, that might be the case but I also could have lost 2k and then I wouldn't expect for you to pay for everything.

Out at the bar a few nights ago...

My friend: "Oh yeah, Tom plays poker all the time!"

Her guy friend: "Oh yeah?"

Me: "I play a little" please end conversation right here

Guy: "Yeah, I've played before, but I always get beat by that last card"

Me: "Yeah, that can happen. I wouldn't play anymore, it's not that good of an idea" please /conversation

Guy: "Yeah, you're right. I would much rather put my money into blackjack"

Me: "Um...unless you are counting cards, that is an even worse idea"

Guy: "No, I don't think so"

Me: "Well, do you really think casinos would have a game where they didn't make money from you in the long term? The odds are against you in the long run"

Guy: "Yeah, but think about it. The dealer is forced to make certain plays like hit on 16. That gives me the advantage since I can make whatever plays I want."

Me: "Ok we shouldn't talk about this anymore, lets change the subject"

I was in my dorm and a friend asked me what I was doing and I said I was in a poker tournament. I told him his roommate was watching me and he asked if he (his roomate) was telling me what everyone's hole cards were. I was just looked at him like the moron he made himself out to be and was like "no man... dude... no"

On the way home from the casino with a taxi driver...

Taxi: Hey I go to that casino quite often I like to play roulette with my friends. Is that what you do?

Me: Nah I only ever played roulette once when they had that special promo on when they payed 40/1 on a number and I lost a few grand. I play poker here.

Taxi: Ahhh I've seen all those people upstairs playing poker, I bet you win loads. How much have you won?

Me: Not really, I'm sure you win a lot more in roulette.

Taxi: Well I have a winning strategy about roulette. Its all about feeling the wheel and knowing what numbers are going to come up. After about the tenth spin I can get all the numbers.

Me: Wow thats insane so how did you do last time?

Taxi: Me and my friend decided to play together we each put in £180 and put £10 on every number apart from 0 to get the feel of the wheel. It was zero and we lost all our money. But once we played together and won £900!

Me: Let me get this straight you put your money on every number apart from zero. Do you know that you can only get your money back for any other number?

Taxi: Yes, but we were getting a feel for the wheel so i knew where to my money for spins in the future

Me: Why don't you just watch and put your money on after you have your feel?

Taxi: I don't get the feel for the wheel if I do that way and I lose. So why do you play poker and not roulette?

Me: Have you ever heard of gambler's fallacy its when you think that certain numbers will come, because they haven't in the past?

Taxi: Oh yeh me and my friend do that with red and black as it can't bet black eight times in a row. We start at £5 and double every time. It is impossible for it to be the same color eight times in a row.

Me: My house is just over there... Let me give you some tips. (so I write down Maringale system and Gambler's fallacy) if you want to a be really good roulette player search these two terms on google!

Biggest idiot ive ever spoken to!

P.S. Funniest convos ive had are at poker table. So many people try to persuade me how roulette is a game of skill and they can see numbers. Its so funny to encourage them and ask for tips!

Poker is gambling.

Is it the same type of gambling as the pit games? Definitely not. But its still gambling.

There's a section of SSHE by Sklansky that talks about this, and how it can negatively impact your game by thinking this way
