lol i just never tell it except to my parents who are cool about it, and ofcourse in bars to girls.

seriously what do you think they find more attractive? some sort of bachelor study thing or some ****ty office job or someone who just plays poker and is rich? also you probably never see the person again after that night so no reason not to lie.

Also a few months ago I met an old friend for lunch and he wanted to talk about poker.
We were talking about hourly rates and he told me "yeah ok, so you make that much an hour, but you could
lose at any time"
He has a valid point imo.

awesome thread.

The most annoying ones Ive gotten is, the 'can you take this 100$ and double it' one, which I used to get from all the people that were sort of friends, but more like people I knew decently well. I also get my grandpa and uncles always asking me what the secret to poker is. I usually just tell them to win more than you lose, and it ends there.

Right now I dont bring it up with anyone besides my mom and dad, which is ok since Im still in school. But once I graduate, and it becomes apparent to extended family that I will not be traditionally employed, I think it will become the topic of conversation much more frequently, and will probably drive me crazy

-You might be doing well but seriously you wont find many girls that think online poker players are very cool.....You tell a girl in a bar that you play poker online and she'll think your an internet nerd (which is true in most cases) or that you have a gambling addiction....

Last year, I attended my first year at college, and when I met girls it was the pretty standard "yeh Im a first year Business major, whats your degree" BS chat up lines.

But this year, I quit college and am playing poker completely full time and Im not sure whether it will be +lifeEV if I go round telling girls I meet in bars that Im a poker pro. Overall, I think it depends on the girl, since you will get the type who will be like "WOW you made 40k in 3 months playing an internet game, thats awesome" and then the type who will be like "ZOMG you are dropout degenerate gambler".

Just a side question, what do people think is a good profession to tell people who you do not think should know that you are a poker player? I mean, I still want something that sounds impressive and can explain my decent income for my age, but not something that is A TRAGIC GAMBLING ADDICTION!!1!!

I dont care what anyone says on this topic, but how you present yourself is directly related to the type of girl you are trying to pick up. All the hoodies from my HS and university (ohio state) my not be overly impressed with the poker thing but as long as u got deep pockets and look clean your all good.

But.....if your looking for a upper class chick one who comes from a good background well educated and all that you dont stand a chance in hell with the poker pro line, u could have millions of $$$ in winnings immense house great cars, gear, everything but no girl from any standup family will give you 5 secs of time once they find this out.

my new favorite line from earlier in this thread "Equity analyst" going to give that one a try.

I used the 'day trader' line for a bit but it typically got the same reaction as poker pro so i dropped that.

Bump.

at a party, circa halloween 2005, party winding down at like 4am. just me and a female friend of the hostess left in living room, where we've been chatting with a buddy of mine who just left.

we've been talking a bit about her nursing job, which of course leads to the inevitable "so what do you do?"... at which point I tell her i work in radio. at which point the hostess comes back in and says "oh rex, tell her where you really make your money."
and i segue, kinda awkwardly into the play 'poker for a living' spiel...
and she then asks me if i know her ex-husband; after she describes him to me, i think, 'yes, i do know that spew-tard'. and i say, "yeah, i've played some with him before" (not wanting to be insulting).

she then proceeds to tell me her divorce from him was just finallized after he ruined them financially by playing poker and spewing off money in the pit.
and how gambling is ****ed up, etc.
i try to appear empathetic, saying "yeah, in that situation it definitely sucks; but i'm different, blah blah".
she, however, is having none of it, and after a good hour of conversation she is now completely disinterested and disgusted.

so i asked "can i buy you breakfast?"
she's like "what?"
"well, you may as well get some ancillary benefit from your ex giving me lots of your/his monies"

without a doubt the worst is trying to explain ANYTHING to people about limit holdem.

Even to most NL poker players it is like speaking a different language.

One of my good friends finally pursuaded me to try and explain, at which point i told him that a few days ago I dropped about 14k in a session but as much as that sucks I was still a 5 figure winner on the month.

No information whatsoever -------->>>>>>> Talking casually about variance at 100/200= DOES NOT COMPUTE

you could just see his brain turn to mush. sigh.

p.s. great thread.

I basically tell my good friends that I play, that I take maney and try to leave it at that. I try never to bring it up, and if they ask I answer as short as possible Seems to work fine for now
i get the feeling that you are a losing player, or at best a mediocre winner at 10nl or 25nl.

I was railing my friend's tournament when a series of ******ed plays and stupid decisions result a guy with an unimproved pair of dueces knocks out a guy who eventually got it all-in with ace high on the river.

I ask the dueces guy: So was that raise for value or a bluff?
No reply.
Then I type to my friend on msn, "man your table is full of donks he just stacked off w/ace high" but I accidentally typed it into the chatbox.
The guy who got knocked out then says, "No, you're the donk"
We argue for a minute or two for fun then I challenge him to some HU at .25/.50. I tell him what table to go to and after a minute of searching he says, "There is no playmoney table with that name"

Both of these. People don't understand multi-tabling and think that you could lose all you are sitting with in one hand. Plus a 9 buy in down swing is not all that much.

Counting cards in Hold Em, LOL

if you read the thread, and were able to understand what you read, you would know why i made my argument. also, you would see that i was correct in that it is sometimes used the way i argue, that was confirmed and backed up by others in the thread.

you are clearly an idiot, i made a well-founded argument later on in the thread and i based my argument on a fact.

ha, funny. also, i got a 96 on the test and i posted it in said thread. being mis-informed and not understanding something are two very different things. i was the former. unfortunately for you the mental capabilities are just not there.

im sorry.
