Holy crap that's why they do that. This thread has just become profitable as well as entertaining. Would love to hear more from the P. dictionary.

so true what everybody is saying

all my coursemates are like "Yeh we will all chip in a tenner and just play with it until we have thousands and split it"

my flatmate thinks I am a degen losing player since I only tell him about my losses just to get it off my shirt. lul, he would prob get mad if he knew I earn 10x what he does at his job

Lol I always crack up when my friends that make $50k+ salary will only play home games with me for $5 max buyin and I'm just like wtf is the point? I tried to make it $20 so it "might" be worth my time, but they just won't. So they all think I suck at poker since i just bluff whoever is in the first pot. If I win it. I repeat on hand #2. If I win that I do it on hand #3 until I run into AA.

Finally I got them to agree to play blackjack. Now that's true gambling at its finest!!

A couple nights ago in the car on the way to dinner with my girlfriend and middle-aged couple she's family friends with. We're having a normal conversation in the car when my gf makes some sort of joke about how I was up til 4am the previous night

Wife: Oh, what were you doing up so late?

Me: Well it wasn't really that late for me, I generally stay up pretty late

Wife: Really? What do you do at such a late hour??

Me: Well you know, this and that

My gf: He plays a lot of poker on the internet

Husband: O Rly? Do you play for real money then?

Me: (groaning on the inside cuz I know whats coming) Yeah

The husband proceeds to give me a solid 5 minute lecture about the dangers of "these offshore gambling websites" and how he's heard they're all controlled by organized crime syndicates who never pay out and how his brother lost a ton of money betting sports online

Me: Yeah, its pretty easy to lose a lot of money betting sports if you don't know what you're doing. I try to stay away from that.

Husband: Well I mean its all gambling, right?

For me, the worst part of it isn't just the mind-dumbing convos they drag you into. I can handle those. What bothers me most is that every grown adult I've ever met who knows I play poker feels the need to give me a super condescending "Good luck with your poker" in place of a normal farewell, even when I haven't discussed poker with them in several months. Sigh.

QFT. Like 70% of these stories are of idiots being condescending to people who are genuinely being nice to them. 25% are egomaniac 18 year olds and the rest are awesome.

Whenever people ask me if I'm addicted (usually gf's friends) I simply reply,

me- "No, I'm not addicted. Poker is something I truly enjoy and it's something I can make money at. Instead of stalking people on facebook or watching "The Hills" I choose to spend my time playing poker. If I were depositing $50 every week because I were a poor player then I would say I have a problem. Would you agree?"

them (usually)- "Well I guess if you put it that way I would have to agree."

This seems to be the easiest/best response I have found to tell people my age.

due toa previous post in this thread, my response to all "your addicted" accusation will be something along the lines of

"I wish I was addicted, I'd make a lot more money. As it is I need discipline to put in the hours I currently do."

Can you imagine telling some hard working guy like a garbageman who works a 40 hour week that he's addicted to garbage?

him: yeah
me: you could have withdrawn it and bought stuff?
him: yeah
me: like a 1K bucks worth of stuff?
him: yeah
me: how much did you lose?

well he couuld say he lost 50 over a certain period of time....just like he lost 1k over a different period of time, so i don't find it particulary crazy that he looks at it like this....

I guess I dont tell people because I'm a noob at the moment. I have lost maybe $50 so far, but improving slowly and have learnt bankroll management aswell as alot of other stuff from lurking these forums for a few weeks.

Might feel like talking about it with friends, definately not family, they would freak if they knew I play for cash.
