Why I don't tell people I play poker. Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I've got 3 roommates that all ask. Generally, if they see me up at 3/4/5am(we have really, really wierd sleeping patterns in my house), they say something like "ah, must have gone far in a tourney tonight", which I don't mind, because it's generally true. If I'm sucking, or just grinding a cash table, I generally don't play past 2am, but if I'm still up after that, it's usually because I have to be.

But, the "how's poker going today" question, that I get every other day, is pretty annoying. I generally say "up", regardless, since they're usually more interested in how much I lose if I say I'm down vs how much I'm up, since I play low stakes. They still are surprised when I say I'm up $50+ for the day, however, or if I get an impressive cash in a Sunday major.

Today, however, I got the typical know it all answer from my eye doctor. I took a poker book to read while I waiting for a hair cut and my eye appointment, and when the doctor came in, he asked what I was reading. He replied with "ah, you don't need a book, all it is is math." I just agreed and let him proceed with the examination, I really didn't feel like getting into an argument.

Also, after reading the first 12 pages of this thread, I really want to kill some of the people that say "oh, you're in denial" about being addicted, or when someone flat out tells another (usually someone that's playing for a living...) that they WILL lose everything. I'd lose it if someone essentially told me that I suck at my job, and that my life will go to **** in the future.

He too asked "if you get 50$ can you make it 200$?"

Its funny how it is the same things people ask - it must say that if you ask these quistions you dont have to be stupid.
My standard answer for that one is something like: I don't worry about how I'm doing in one session or day. After all, anyone can get a bad run of cards for a while. As long as I'm up at the end of the month, I'm happy.

This answer, if all goes well, accomplishes two things:

1. It keeps people from always bugging you about whether you are "up or down today".

2. It shows that you are a serious person with a long-term perspective, and it begins (one hopes) to educate them that poker is about the long-term, not about the big score.

I always get the standard:

1. you are addicted and you just don't know it
2. you will eventually lose, all gamblers do (lol)
3. online poker is rigged
4. how much did you win/lose

I also get this question from the late teen/early 20s $5 sng home game specialists:
"How do you play man? Do you just play really tight, or are you super aggressive and bluff ppl all the time?"

Also, have u ever been made to pay/pay more for something just b/c u won today in poker. Example: You just won a 45 man sng for $1200, you should buy a keg for the house tonight!

These are the ones that tilt me. They think they can own your soul but they don't realize how little they know.

This reminded me of the moranic friends who think they can be like you beg you for advice, and then proceed to buy in and lose their money due to them not being able to deal with nitty BRM and micro stakes.

At first when i was beating micros for liek $200 per month they were like lol it took u a whole month to make that. But when i got to small stakes they started asking me all these questions, essentially trying to gain information in order to emulate me because now their obv jealous.

convo with mother-in-law
watching show about what people do when they win the lottery
I say something along the lines of playing the lottery is silly, I know they buy lotto tickets all the time
she says "well we can all dream cant we?"
and I say something like "or you could work hard"
she says "well then why do you gamble on the internet"
because internet poker is just like buying a lottery ticket.

i agree with lots of the things in this thread, but this tilted the ****ing **** out of me:

my sister used to be an alcoholic gambler who would throw away her weekly earnings at slots and roulette at foxwoods. now she is in AA and swears against gambling.

so, everytime she saw me playing poker she went to the powerbox in the garage and turned off the power in my room - claiming that poker would ruin my soul and my life

of course this stopped when i told her i would sue her unless she paid me back the $500 i lost that was invested in the SNGs i was playing. she didn't believe me. then i saw a lawyer (my grandfather) and got the papers and stapled them to her bed room door.

she leaves me alone now

I just love reading the reviews with phrases like "degen" "hero" and "busto"

"stack off" is nice as well

Example: "This degen was UTG+3 and opened for 5xBB. Our Hero re-raised and the Villian stacked off with JJ to KK only to spike a river Jack and leave our Hero busto"

-amazing fictitious example

I don't know where to start on my roommate P., and I would be sorry for telling him I play if he weren't so damned unintentionally hilarious and full of it. Hours of entertainment.

As soon as he found out I play, he tried to convince me that him and his friend ran an illegal card game back home, and that he made many tens of thousands (the amount varies) before "the IRS found out and got him in trouble" for their weekly $50 sit n gos. Naturally, they were colluding and chip dumping experts. He even threw in a Rounders fantasy where him and his buddy got beat up when a behemoth ginger stood up at the otherwise quiet table and shouted "This table is a little too noisy" and proceeded to attack them/take their rollz.

The P. poker dictionary:

"Live cards": Low, unsuited connectors

"Switching up my play": Shoving for 30x pot

"I've got odds": Calling with the second nuts to a 1/2 pot river bet

"I don't have odds": Laying down a set to a 1/6 pot all-in

"Owning my button": Limp min-reraise w/any 2 "That' my button. I OWN that mother f$%er!"

I could go on for paragraphs about the guy, so much fun and now I am an expert at keeping a straight face.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of "You know its illegal to play online in the U.S." Another friend, "My mom's a lawyer and she says if they catch you they can take your house." I'm just like, "No they can't." My friend was all flustered afterwards.

I get this particular one all the time, and it makes my teeth grind in frustration.

"So I hear you play poker?"
"Yeah..."
"So how much do you bet?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like if you get a really good hand, like an ace or a king. How much do you bet?"

I love this thread...

My dad once asked me if I wanted to do some work for foodmoney ( help him move ) and I told him I'd make more money staying home, he knows I play poker and as soon as he found out how much my roll was at the time I get the "You better cashout before you lose it all".
He also told my mom about it and she said the exact same thing, thank god I've moved out...

If it's a guy who finds out, then he'll probably start giving me advice on my game. If it's a girl she's gonna want me to take her to the casino on a friday night and double her money, like some kind of sick date.
