That's not that bad...

[x] Actually horse racing has a lot in common with other things that involve gambling with the best of it. Because it uses a pari-mutuel system, bets can occasionally be mispriced. It also lends itself well to statistical analysis.

That's all well and good, but my roommate wasn't talking about statistical analysis or mispriced bets. He was talking about looking deep into the eyes of each horse and crystal balling which one was gonna win. Tilted me to no end.

Flatmate tells me after I went through a bad streak to give up poker and play roulette for a living. I've tried to explain EV only a million times. Maybe he just does it to tilt me further.

Guy at party after I explain poker is my main source of income tells me he used to have a system for roulette. "Oh yeah? USED to huh?"

Ever tried having a conversation with someone who is really keen and tries to play well but still plays free poker and has never read a book or browsed a credible forum? My mate is kind of self poker educated and just makes up his own lingo. I am at a point where I just nod and say "uhuh" without having a friggin clue what he's on about. Bet's are 'off' the flop. WTF?? ON the flop dude. A 3 bet to him I found out was a 3BB raise not a 3 bet. "Better discount a fair bit of that advice then buddy."

I feel like I'm the only person who doesnt care if people ask about how much I make. Just tell them my hourly rate and they are satisfied with that.

fwiw the secret to betting on horses is to watch and see which horse poops immediately before the race, and then bet on him because he has less weight to carry

I cant believe It I actually got the "Can I give you $100 and you double it for me?". It happened to me at a party last weekend. I replied with; "How about I do you one better and just give you $100 for free now? Sound good?"

This was from someone whose fairly intelligent too.

I always got a mate say "Ryan, if you ever go bust you can play off my money"
Good to know mate, good to know.

I just spent 3 weeks in London, knowing 3 people living there (with 2 of them making a decent amount of money on poker), and so most of their friends know I live off poker as well. Most of these also have played poker themselves. I guess you can tell where this is going.

Every time I have met the ones who have played poker in their 2x-year long life, I have ended up getting literally dragged into some ******ed conversation regarding online poker, each having their own interesting story to tell. Now, by all means, they are all great guys, but this usually leaves me wondering when it's going to stop and when I'll be handed a rope from the roof.

One of these guys told me had finally ''cracked online poker''. I asked how. He said, glowing with confidence, that you just have to bet, bet, bet, bet. He then continued saying how he, one time, had played 85% of his hands over a 2 hour session and won 70% of them. He was sure he could make a living off poker too. Then, of course, came the question ''so, which hands do you go all-in with pre-flop?''.

I also find it funny how 3 out of 3, of the mentioned friends, take credit for teaching the guys who actually make money off poker. Each and every one of them say ''you know, I'm the one who actually taught him poker. I'm pretty good myself.''

Oh well, watever.

I guess I'm lucky in that I come from a family of gamblers, and the place where I used to work was full of gamblers as well (they actually got me into poker). Comment from my father: "Yeah, maybe when you're out of college you can play poker for a living." Haha.

Friends though - different matter. No one really gets it, but hey, that's cool. I stopped talking to anyone (kids at college, etc) about online poker because I always get "Yeah dude, I used to play online all the time!" Response: "Oh, what stakes did you play (or did you end ahead, blah blah)?" Them: "Whaaat? No, play money man."

Haha, I find this pretty funny. As if people don't understand that in a symmetric game, any supposed "disadvantage" that applies to you applies to everyone else as well.

I hate to say this, but it's the people who have that mentality that we hate telling.
