I always get the "how can you play online, you can't see their face" or the "how much did you make today?" I also recently got a "is this all you do?" because I spend a lot of time on my computer. I wanted to tell her I make more in a day than she does in a month

I just moved into a new house and talked with my neighbor the other week about poker.

Him: I don't like hold 'em because the value of flushes goes down. When everyone uses the same 5 cards, there's always another guy with a higher flush!

Me: yeah.... ok

you play cash games? thats not real skill cause u can rebuy

u lost 2k? but that 2k isn't real since u didnt deposit it

whinings about losing coin flips with 10bb in 50ftp satellites are always fun to hear too

o ya, and constant conspiracy theories about FTP and how people get beginners luck so they re-deposit, or people get set up so there are bigger pots or how all the pros (who own the site...) are down so it must be rigged etc.

I once told my grandparents I play poker for a part time job, and they were actually really cool about it, once I explained how I approach it and things. Even though I had to explain a lot, they were really optimistic about it. Old people are cool imo.

Me: "Vegas"

Pastor looking concerned: "Oh yeah, how was THAT? What were you doing out there?"

Me: "Playing poker. Went out there with some friends for the WSOP."

My Dad (who I hadn't noticed right behind me) trying to play it off to avoid embarassment: "He thinks he's going to get on TV..."

Pastor, now looking gravely concerned: "So... how much did you lose? You didn't lose all your money did you?"

Me: "Nope quite the opposite actually. My friends were telling me I was running like god."

"I bet you know all the odds. Are you a math genius? I am not good at math so I probably won't be good at poker."

And what drives me crazy is when I discover that somebody likes playing poker online, so I start talking to them about it, ask them what site and which games they play, and inevitably they always play for play money...

At a job interview at Borders

Interviewer: So what books are you reading now?

Me: Well, aside from my school books, which take up a lot of my time, most of what I read these days are poker books, I just got done reading Harrington on Cash Games.

Interviewer: O rly, you play poker???

Me: Yeah

Interviewer: Ooooohhhh thats so cool, have you seen the movie "21"??!!?!?!??! I ove that flick!!!

Me: (jams an ice pick into his eye)

i go the other way with it. i won't be the one to bring it up, but if the subject of poker is ever raised, i'll say something crazy like "i'm the best player alive and i never lose." you would not believe how much action i've gotten out of this from the people whom i least expected: teachers, co-workers, even girls i've dated. it seems like if someone knows how to play poker, and you tell them that you are "completely and utterly invincible" the first thing they want to do it play you. i've made way more money than i've lost using this approach.

He just thinks, "Kahn what a lucky scrub" Even other poker players they'll be on the rail and they'll all talk amongst themselves, "How could he get it all in with AQ there, what an idiot." What you have to realize is that nobody cares about you. Nobody wants to see you do well in poker. Nobody wants you to be successful in life. Just remember that and you'll be an all-star.
I think a lot of people that play poker haven't come to realize this yet.

i met one of my roommate's best friend's the other day. he saw that i was 4-tabling tourneys and automatically assumed that i was down 4x the amount that he is down lifetime (like 500) since I'm playing 4 times as many tables as he usually plays.

I do not mind the people that have no clue as much as the people that think they do. They always want to talk about their stratagy, and it is always like "i never raise, so that way no on will know what i have"

For all of you guys that are complaining about the reactions that you get for playing full time, i wish i was you.

I sell cars for a living so everyone that finds that out thinks i am a scumbag. and get more stupid follow up questions and comments than you could believe like

"how can you that, having to lie all the time"

"i would me good at that, i love cars"

"i bet you love your job, getting to drive cool cars all of the time"

"so there is REALLY a ton of profit in cars, right?"

"i am a really good liar, so i would be good at selling"

the list can go on and on and on.

My dad always asks "So how much money did you make today?"

I'm like "It doesn't really matter because as long as I play good poker I'll always win money in the long run"

He's like "Yea I know you say that all the time so you lost money today than?"

Sigh.

My roommate just now as I'm watching yesterday's WSOP episode on pokertube

Him: So, are you also into horse racing?

Me: Uhhh no, why?

Him: Well I mean, it seems kinda similar to me because you like, have to size up the horses, look at it and everything to decide which one's gonna win. Kinda like reading people in poker right?
