my roommates walk into my room and ask me "are you up or down" constantly throughout sessions. I was introduced to one of their friends a couple days ago and he asks me "so you're that poker guy right, how much have you won?" I tell him something along the lines of "I don't really feel comfortable telling you that" and he's annoyed with my because I won't disclose my "winnings." god damnit.

This is better than my old roomate who always would ask, "How much are you up?" in a way that implied he expected an answer of a huge amount everytime. Whenever I'd say I'm down an amount he would always say, "oh" like I had somehow let him down or he was disappointed in me. You probably have to be there, but this used to life tilt me.

Not many people in my home town know that I play poker--my family, other poker players, and maybe 10 other people.

My wife told her parents that I play, but they never said anything, so I wasn't sure how they felt about it.

Two months later we are at her parent's house, and out of the blue, her dad tells me that he paid cash for his first car with poker winnings.

I guess I don't have to worry about any annoying questions from him.

I love this thread but I'm stunned by the fact that so many of you have problems with their parents. Either by explaining poker itself being profitable or them not having the trust in you being smart enough not turning out or being a douche. If you're smart enough to make a decent living at poker your parents must know you're smart and responsible, they have lived with you for the bigger part of your life. Maybe I overestimate parents because mine actually helped me get started.

I asked my dad if I could borrow some money from his cc to start playing poker. So that in a year or two I wouldn't cost any more money. After a while explaining that you play against other people and not a casino and all you have to do is be smarter and think logically. I was still a noob and hadn't read or even played the game. But still my father trusted me that I wouldn't back this idea up if there wasn't a shred of truth in it.

No parent in their right mind would let their kid borrow money to start playing poker. How old were you when this happened?

In either case you were either underage or should have been able to support yourself without borrowing to start playing.

My dad actually offered to do my first deposit a couple months after I turned 17. He asked if I was tired of play money, I was like obv. So he let me deposit..went broke a few times. But he was generous.

But yeah...just to add on, I hate when people ask how much I make. Insta life tilt.

I do get satisfaction telling people how much I lost sometimes for some weird reason. I find it funny when a few of my friends seem to be happier when I lose. I just lol.

When I made my first (and last) deposit of $300 on Party my dad saw the credit card bill and went ballistic. He immediately called me from Canada (I was living in Tokyo at the time) and went off about how I was a degenerate and would max out my credit card and lose thousands of dollars. He's okay with it now that it's paid off more than any investment he's made in his entire life (except for his house).

Nobody likes the lucky guy...hence, lucky bastard

What irritates me the most is constantly hearing about how I should quit when I am ahead a certain amount every day. I have to launch into the "the next hand you play is the next hand you play" speach and realize they are too stupid to get it.

This thread always makes me realise how lucky I am with my mum and poker.
She accepts it to the point where it's a viable excuse to get out of something, for example, she'll premise any task or job she wants me to do by asking "are you playing poker?" and if I tell her I am she'll get someone else to do it. It's pretty much like if I told her I was studying for exams or something and I've actually lied on numerous occasions and told her I was playing poker when I was just on the internet and wasting time to get out of having to do something lol.
She doesn't ask me if I'm up/down/how much each day and will simply say something like "bad day at the tables?" if I'm clearly frustrated or angry and I might respond with "yeah, I dropped like 10 buyins [probably helps her that I say buy ins and not however many thousands the actual figure was]" to which she might say something like "it all works out in the long run though, right?". This is fairly amazing imo given that she has never played in her life and her knowledge is entirely what I've explained to her.

Of course, pretty much all my friends are ******ed and I've got all the "but how much did you lose?"/"cash out before you lose it all"/"can I give you some money and you double it for me" bull****. My standard response to the "can I give you some money line" is now "if you can come up with about $50k I think I could work out a deal with you", so far no one has taken me up on my offer .
