Tell them it is like people that are paid to invest other peoples money in the stock market only you make more money.
Can I stake you $100 and you turn it into $200?

Possibly:
I may turn it into $0 - 20% chance because I'm good.
I may turn it into $200 - 40% chance
I may turn it into $300 - 20% chance
I may turn it into $400 - 20% chance.

Sounds good to you? Pockets $100

2 days later:
Option 1 happened - I turned it into $0, hard luck. Luckily for me it wasn't my money, so as usual I lost nothing! This new $100 dollar watch, yeah I got it a couple of weeks ago, why?

My father, I have tried to explain it to him a couple of times, but it always ends like this, he will not listen or doesn't understand what I am trying to say, and just gets mad at me, because he thinks it's pure luck and I will soon be playing for our house, lmao.
If you're serious about showing him otherwise, try printing out a graph.

But did you tell them that Absolute paid back all the BIs to all those who played in the same tourney w/ the superuser, regardless of wether they cashed or not?!?!

Do you never go out and meet new random people? If you did you would get these comments constantly.

Random girl: Hey
Me: What's up?
RG: I'm Janna
Me: Austiger
RG: So, what do you do for a living?
Me: I play poker.
RG: Please don't tell people that.
Me: Why not?
RG: You're better than that.
Me: I'm really not.

Solution to the home game micro-stake problem:

Go play with your friends and dominate the game. Before you leave, shove your 8 buy-in stack in the middle and say "Just give me cab fare and you guys can play for the rest." You'll be a legend in their circle from that point forward.

+1. I peaked my rating in the mid 1800s a year or so ago. Now below 1700. Went from breakeven 1/2 limit player to 5ptbb winner at 200nl in that time, so no regrets.

no u tart , the Random Number Generator worked perfectly. There was just a cheater high up in the company who could see whole cards, not manipulate the deal.

I've found that the best way to end a poker conversation is to be really "nerdy" about it.

Them: Whats the most you've won?

Me: Well, one time I was like UTG+1 in a LAG and raised it 3x BB with suited cons, one TAP called and the CO reraised it...yada yada...

It won't take long until they loose interest.

lol try being a sociology/economics student....although i think people started to give me a bit more credibility once i got my iphone/28" monitor/wii etc. As an aside im finding it much worse over the summer as all of my friends are working full time and i think people start to see it as a bit more "real" when your not working and they are. And i have had a few gay comments like "its alright till u lose" not from good friends but its still annoying nonetheless.

The thing that really gets me is how people assume that just because you're a poker player you automatically play roulette and blackjack and hang out in casinos.

"Oh so you're a poker player? I went to the casino the other day, lost like £30 on roulette."

Ok great.

That's like you telling me you're an astronaut and me turning round and saying i went on Space Mountain last summer at Disneyworld. Cheers pal great input.

My family also seem very concerned that i'm "LOSING MYSELF IN A virtual world" ---- So you conveniently forgot that your job involves staring at a computer screen all day???

The phrases:

PATH TO DESTRUCTION
and
ROAD TO RUIN

are often frequently brought up.

I think i'll tell everyone i meet about it from now on actually, and explain the dynamics, equity, with all the classic dice-examples and whatever.

I'll have the greatest tilt-control in the world looking back on that when loosing the 10th 80/20 for the night.

This thread delivers from the get go to the let go

About 100 pages back someone mentioned professional scrabble players. I had an aunt (sadly passed away now ) who was a high up competition scrabble player. Won a few big national and international championships. I thought I was good until I played against her. She could find unreal scores with any 7 tiles, time after time. Great to watch, and a lot more tactical than I ever would have thought. There's a good degree of bluffing too. Making the opp think you are planing to use one part of the board so that they will cover it on your round, leaving where you were really planning to go open, that sort of thing.

When I start making serious money (rather than my current grinding pitance) I am planning to tell people I am independently wealthy. Bought and sold some net companies and retired on the profits.

Also, "No, I don't know much about this 'poker' of which you speak, but sure, i'll be happy to bring some of my wealth to your next home game, sounds like a laugh. Just don't take to much off me"

"You play poker? I love gambling, I play roulette, I have a strategy, wanna hear it? Ive been 6 times now and I havent lost!".

"Im good at poker, I can beat you, its just because im a good liar people can never tell if im bluffing or not".

"That happend to me ONCE I had kings and flop comes down 3 cards I go all in and some guy had called with pocket twos and hit three of a kind!"
