As I remember, it was someone freaking out about one hand in one tournament. That certainly demonstrates a lack of long-term perspective.

I would never assume that someone already knows something, just because they are in these forums. When I started playing poker, it was from watching it on TV. I didn't know anyone that played poker, and I had no idea there were places to play live poker in my city. But I wanted to play, so I decided that the best way to learn was to get books on poker from the library.

One of those was a 2+2 book, so I checked out the forums, again, knowing next to nothing. We all have to start somewhere, and I don't assume that someone knows something unless it is obvious in his post. In this case, it was not obvious.

The second to last line is what the person he was arguing with said to him. It's not what the poster said.

Like I said, you completely misinterpreted his post.

Father-in-law: Daugter tells me you couldn't make it down to visit yesterday because you were playing poker. What's up with that?

Me: Well, I did pretty well and had to return for another day for the final table. (crap, whyINF is my FIT asking me about poker)

FIL: I watch some of that stuff on TV. It blows my mind how these people are betting millions of dollars on a card game.

Me: Ummmm. Those are tournament chips. (proceed to explain how they are a little different from cash value chips for the next 20 minutes).

FIL: That is pretty interesting. So can I back you $10k for the WSOPME?

Me: Ummmm. I don't think that would be a good idea.

Dad: how do you play so many tables?

Me: it's not as hard as it looks, plus I have a HUD which tells me how tight, aggressive, etc a player is.

Dad: oh so your not a true poker player?

Me: Huh?

Dad: well a true poker player would be able to read your opponents by reading their face not reading stats on a computer. I guess that's why you play online.

WTF

I don't answer them directly. It's usually the a-holes from college that I haven't seen in twenty years, and didn't even like back then, that want to press me on the issue. One time I just said: "Maybe I'll write a book someday... but don't hold your breath." Kind of rude, but they stopped questioning me about my source of income.

It's pretty easy to reply to that. Just tell him: "I guess you're right. It's better to play only one table at a time, and pay the 10% rake, plus the BBJ drop, and tip the dealers and waitresses, and burn gas driving to the casino, and wear out my tires, and look at a bunch of ugly faces... The more I think about it, the more I like it! Wow, you've shown me the light!! No more 16-tabling for me!!!"

(Dad leaves in disgust)

Yeh. Or, like, explain why he's wrong without alienating him.

I received a B on this paper and her only comments were as follows: "Watch out - what goes up, must go down" in response to my sentence. "Poker, which started off as a hobby, has now turned into a form of income over the last 2 years."

So im multitabling on FT in my dorm room with my door open. Kid down the hall walks in. Then he starts trying to convince me how online poker is rigged. Then this happens:

Kid: What are the black boxes underneath the usernames?
Me: Thats my HUD, it tells me stats on the other players.
Kid: Does that come with the poker software?
Me: No, you have to buy it.

(20 second pause.....)

Kid: So you're cheating. right?
Me: Massive facepalm

its not that hard to tell a person with at least average IQ how poker can be profitable.
first of all you must admit that in the short run,its luck, most of all.
everyone gets that.
then you talk about playing the same game at the same stakes (that you can afford without risk of going broke...20-100 buy-ins...blabla) for a few month and explain how you get into similar situations very often.(like you have a made hand opponent has a drawhand and vice versa).
still there is luck but it equals after a few hundred times of a quiet similar situation.
then you talk about playing a few years and making right decisions at the highest possible rate.
i always end my explanation with saying: " poker is just like the real-life work, you need to have discipline, patience and focus on your tasks to have success.and the reason why only a few people make profit of it, is that most people have leaks like tilt, brm, playing drunk or jumping up limits, just have a good time...lol..., etc."
finally the person you talk to will say something like: "uh, it aint sound that much like fun overall."
then i tend to say:" if you want fun, play tournaments, but if you win big please join my cashgametables"
maybe explain (in less then 1min) why tournaments are most luckbased pokergames, and why they make people who watch it on tv think all pokergames are that much luckbased.
i finish by saying i play limit omaha hi lo where 90% is strategy and 10% is bluffing(not 100% right, but helps the explanation).

sry for my english im not a native speaker.
