him: "oh, really?"
me: "yeah"

For the next ten minutes, I'm stuck listening to how he won $40 at a home game once and that he prefers pocket twos to pocket aces.

Lol.

I have a friend who knows I play poker, knows the extreme basics like AA is a good starting hand but AK sucks because he never hits 2 pair

Anyway I havent been playing for a great deal of time (8 months) but I had a deep run in a tourni the other night live and I told him because Ive played a few tournis lately and he knows Ive played online but Ive always busted before cashing but making ok runs

He scrunches up his face and says "have you even won a tournament at the casino yet?"

he has a point. Deep runs/ok runs in a tourney but dont cash. Does not compute.

Whenever people said the "if I give you $20, can you double it" I laughed and joked around. You mean people are actually serious when they say that ****??

Suggestion for next discussion:

"OMG So you play poker?"

"yes"

"but how can you win?"

"I dunno, i just put the money on the table and get lucky, its the darndest thing"

You gotta think metagame here. If you go around saying "its skill, you win in the longrun etc etc" its -EV for good poker players. Just say you get lucky all the time, its way better EV

Me: Canada, I think.
Bank Teller Lady: Do you work there?
Me: No, I play poker online.
Bank Teller Lady: Don't you know that's gambling?

It would be, but the thing is that people feel the need to show off their baller status by saying they play poker. They don't realize how others perceive this. I just say I run a home based business. Same when playing live, I own a home based business. Not too far off, most regs I play live with, still think I run my business I had a few years back, or just living off the "big money I must have made"

Casual poker. Poker as a living is another story entirely.

I work hosting free league poker tournaments in pubs (sick beat) and I play fairly seriously live at the only casino in the city...

Anyway, Saturday night I was actually playing 2/3 PLO, which was actually the biggest game in terms of min-buyin in the poker room. The min was $200, but almost everyone around $500 in front of them, myself about 600. Anyway, it crossed my mind the next day at work that I was playing $500 pots regularly in this game, then the next day working for around a quarter of that for the night. This rather saddened me, and I mentioned it to a regular pub player, who responded with

"If you were as good as me, you would be crushing these guys"

He has made two freeleague final tables (9 of maybe 40) in the last 5 attempts as far as I know...

This followed with 20 minutes or so of complex strat, most of which involved limp folding 5 BB's deep, calling a lot OOP with low suited connectors, and if I turn over my cards last before a race I increase my chance of winning by 20%

What negative experiences have you guys had when someone found out you play poker for a living and/or on the internet?
I dont play for a living, but do play on a regualr basis.

When people start talking about poker, I always feel uncomfortable because asll I want to do, is tell them how much of a donk they sound.

I just, "I sure could, but I prefer to do it with $300 of my own so I can keep it."

Also, on it being rigged, a bad idea, or -EV in general, I go with:

"Oh, you're probably right." Then ignore them. It's surprisingly effective.

I also like,

Me: "Hey, what did you do for fun last weekend?"

Them: "Random activity of my choosing."

Me: "So, how much did you lose?"

Then, if a person is too dense to not see the comparison between spending $10 playing in a MTT for a few hours and spending $10 seeing a movie, I just resort to imagining them choking on their own tongue or running into closed glass doors.
