Oh, another thing that ticks me off... trying to teach "friends".
I play this 2NL home game for fun, where people try to learn a bit. The money is not an issue for them, but we decided to play for at least something to keep it interesting, we are all friends in there. At first, I was teaching them quite a bit... but then I gave up and let another guy do all the teaching because of things like this:

We spend 30-40 minutes talking about the downsides of slowplaying. Explain all the reasoning behind it. Give examples. Etc. Then this happens.

(In short)

I am BTN with JT
Villain is MP and raises to 4BB.

Flop:

KQ7
Pot (10BB)
MP checks, Hero bets 4BB, MP calls.

Turn:

A
Pot (18BB)
MP checks, Hero bets 16BB, MP Goes All-in, Hero calls.

River: 2

Results:

Hero wins with nut straight.
MP mucks KQo
_________________________________________

Me: Why did you slowplay after we spent like 40 minutes talking about the pitfalls of slowplaying?
MP: Well, I have a very strong hand and the chances of him having a good drawing hand are so bad, and besides he might just get a lower 2 pair and I will stack him... I will win in the long run.
Me: ... .... ... ... ok, sounds like your logic is splendid! You are learning really fast!

I used to play in a similar .10/.20 training game (before the host went uber-busto to finance his wedding... pssy) I absolutely would have had to slowplay the next biggish hand I got if we were just talking about the perils of slowplaying.

Way to berate your friends and wreck the good time tho.

He might be wrong here, but there's nothing wrong with his logic in his explanation.

After reading the first few pages, it's great to know I'm not the only one who gets the "Oh man can I give you $100 and have you double it up for me just once?" So annoying...Either that or people think I'm automatically an online gambling degenerate who has serious problems. I just keep my mouth shut these days.

The hell they won't! Mention you know squat about computers and everyone will start telling you about their buggy system and trying to get you to fix it.

i) How can you play poker if you can't see people's faces? (Er, try playing some solid strategy instead?)

ii) You're reading a magazine/book about poker? I didn't think there was that much to say about it! (Er, there you go, then...)

iii) You won $xxxx? Wow, can you teach me?
(Er yes, okay, here is a memory stick with the contents of my brain and what I've learned in the last four years, shall we slot it into your head now?)

I could have told him that I was a computer science major about the time he was born, but instead I said, "Thanks, I'll have to tell my dad that you said that. Maybe he'll put it in his blog".

Nowadays if ppl rly ask what I do for $ i tell them but if I can instantly tell they are ******ed I just don't say another word about it, there's rly no point in arguing with people who don't know anything.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Actually, I grew with a father who, thought he wasn't educated beyond high school, was a "tech" guy before that word was coined. He was a radio announcer back when you had to take tests and get Federal Communications Commission (FCC) licenses to be able to work in radio.

My father and I got our amateur radio (ham) licenses at the same time. I grew up listening to Radio Moscow and BBC on his short wave radio. He had online newsletters before there were blogs. He doesn't really get poker, in the sense that he's not big on any kind of competitive sport or game. But he understands that I treat it as a business, and that's good enough for me.

One of my favorite stories is when we had a car with an AM-only radio, and he bought an FM converter and wired it into his car. I asked why he didn't just get an AM/FM radio, and he said that it was more fun to play with wires.

I had my account hacked and my $12.5k BR stolen. Two cops come to my house to take a witness statement. I do my best to explain to them how it is real money and it can be withdrawn at any time. Conversation goes a little something like this:

Cop: So how much did you put down to start with?
Me: Well I deposited $2500 on this particular site and ran it up to $12.5k which was then withdrawn by somebody else.
Cop: Oh so you are only out $2500?
Me: ?????????

I would not even waste my time calling the cops for this. Probably better value in calling your church!

If he is a math guy you should be able to explain to him outs for draws and pot odds and the correlation between them. Explain in detail, that you know of 5 cards out of 52 and you hold 4 to a flush with 2 cards to come. Explain that means you have 9 outs because there is 9 hearts left in the deck. Explain that that means you have a 9 out of 47 chance of hitting or hitting once and missing 4 times, therefore in a $10 heads up pot you can only call a bet of $2.50 in order to break even. Don't get detailed right away about implied odds or anything. Just be real basic.

Get visual even, use a deck.
or just...don't...tell...them

To all the people who cannot fathom why people ask them to double their $50 or $100, the reason is very simple and intuitive if you look at it from the asker's perspective:

People's conceptions of a winning poker player is that he is someone who makes large sums (relative to the asker) while playing cards. They do not realise how much work the person has to have put in over their lifetime, they just see the current outcome: he just played a hand or two of cards and made more money than I earn in a month/ year/ whatever. People see playing cards as either heavily luck based or relatively easy to do (once some convoluted secret method is found out). They might not be able to do it themselves, but the game must come easy and without risk to the high stakes baller. Why do you think people ask to learn "the secret"?

They imagine the player to have discovered a money printing press and are onto a good thing. They see the player as fortunate (in life) and want to share some of his easy winnings. They think that giving the person $50 of their own for him to double is just the same for the player as the player using $50 of his own to double. They are essentially asking the player to forgo some of his easy and repeatable winnings.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend such people; it's ignorance but it is entirely explainable ignorance. Why do you think people beg Phil Ivey for $5 or whatever, it's not even like 20th of a blind to him. Imagine if Ivey posted a blind and timed out because he was in the bathroom. This sum is certainly more than my entire bankroll. I have spent 3 months playing with this sum of money, yet to someone like Ivey he can lose it (and not even notice, which is more the point here) just because he spent an extra 15 seconds in the bathroom.

Another example would be if you lunched with Picasso and he spent 15 seconds doodling on a napkin. What is this worth to Picasso? Not much. But the work itself is probably worth tens of thousands. If you begged him to give you it for free, he might be unwilling because the work itself is intrinsically valuable even if it was so simple and meaningless to him. His whole life experience brought him to a position where he could defecate on a napkin and that would be worth tens of thousands. The other party might be confused by this as he only sees 15 seconds of scribbling.

The fact that people cannot work this out when it is so obvious is what makes them life fish imo.
