Why I don't tell people I play poker. Why I don't tell people I play poker.

A few days ago I was playing in (and running deep in) an MTT at my local casino, and while it was happening 2 different friends rung me and asked what I was doing. When I told them and said I was doing well, they both told me to remember to quit while I'm ahead. I've explained how a tournament works 100s of times before, and one has even come with me once and played in it >.>

haha i love the "the house always wins" line.
ive noticed alot of how much did you lose ones too.
i study media at college and we're in the tv studio as a project we have to
get infront of the camera and "confess" something. so naturally i tell them
about the time i was 15 stole my dads credit card and lost ~£250 on online blackjack. i get back in the room and some guy says
"so how much did you win?"

beisdes many other things, one thing that poker taught me was the need for evidence through probability and statistics. No opinion or speculation. Solid facts. And this is what most people who are ignorant of probability and statistics suffer from. I use to get angry and try to explain probability and stat to people when they insulted me for playing poker. But thats a huge mistake. Now at days I learned to just look at them, and in my head just laugh and go yeah your right. Its all luck.

Or I just htit them with, wheres your facts? evidence please?

These are usually people who won like petty home games and got lucky or people who work jobs and no nothing of math. I jsut laugh at them. What can you do? My mouth is going "yeah your right bob, your totally right." My brain is laughing and saying i cannot stand this dude."

The one I always get from these Rat Race 9 to 5 junkies is "I could never gamble away my hard earned money, I don't know how you can do that !!"

Then I ask them what THEY do. Usually they say "real estate", or "financial planner"....and I'm like WTF !!!! People who tell me they are into real estate, financial planning, or mortgages I usually give them a brutally disgusted look and tell them they what they do has more gamble to it than poker !! They don't get it, and I ask them how the last year has been for them...and they're like "oh yeah". Then I go on tilt, leave them in their stupor and go to the bar to drink to all the fkng ******s in the world.

I don't understand how people who know I play for a living and make a significant amount doing it still ask "if I give you $100 can you make some money for me?" How does it not click in their heads how ridiculous of an idea that is? It blows my mind. Then I have to figure out a way to explain to them why it's a ridiculous idea without implying that they're stupid.

Okay, Its Labor Day Sunday, and my family is having people over...I satellited into the Sunday 750K, get busted out 195th and net about $350 for 4 hours of play....I go outside and finally join the party, and my sister says "why do you waste your time?" lots of people defend me and say..he just made 80 bucks an hour playing poker.....she says its a waste of time, blah, blah, blah

Well, the next week, I take 5th, win 32K, and call her and ask if Im still wasting my time?

She never honestly thought it's a waste of time, she was just jealous and hoped you'd stop being financially more successful than her (at least for the 80$/hour part), now she'll go on monkeytilt and murder you and steal your rollz

I told my friend today that I play poker. He than proceeded to ask me if I can count cards. I calmly told him no, you can only count cards in 21.

He than gets serious and is like, no, you can definitely count cards in poker, in fact you can count cards in any card game.

Soon enough I find out that he thinks counting outs is "counting cards", and that it can be considered cheating, just like in 21.

lol.

I recently took a test for ADHD with also a psyology test, one of the questions was:

Her: Do you have a job???

ME: playing poker around 1-2 hour a day to make enough to pay for student life.

Her: How much do you earn a month?

Depends varying from -5k to +10k, their is variance involved on average around 3-4k tho. More then enough to come by.

How much did you earn last month:
-3k

I thought she just typed my answers in the computer, when she went to get coffee i leaned in to see what she wrote. This literally stood there.

Plays poker for money. Calls is a job????
Won some money, lost 5k.

When she came back and i told her i saw what she typed down she got all defence about how she wasn't prejudged against me now that she knows i'm a degenerate gambler and that it's normal because ADHD hardly ever comes without other problems.

This is where you give her the finger, slap her across the face with a strap of hundreds and walk out.
