Why I don't tell people I play poker. Why I don't tell people I play poker.

I hate ignorant people.

And for some odd damn reason they're the only ones that end up talking to me about poker.
I spend enough time playing that when I'm not its the last thing on my mind.
YOU'RE RUINING MY F*CKING DAY A-HOLE!!!!!!!!!

And the stupid fish declined the +10k EV offer along with the advantage of vastly reduced variance! Gambling addict or what! She then proceeded to reveal the 300k on the very next case , accepted the next offer for 20k (which was, again, clearly +EV... either the hosts made a mistake or were just playing with her) and walked away

Them: So is that real money?

He plays poker on the internet."

him: "oh, really?"
me: "yeah"

For the next ten minutes, I'm stuck listening to how he won $40 at a home game once and that he prefers pocket twos to pocket aces.

What negative experiences have you guys had when someone found out you play poker for a living and/or on the internet?
yeah I understand it gets a little old but lighten up a bit damn whats the big deal. I am sure a lot of diff professions have similar experiences with this.

I am playing a mtt and have about 12k in chips. My girlfriend comes over to ask me something and happens to glance at the screen and starts freaking out saying I need to cash out now, wow thats so much money, cash it out cash it out. Needless to say she was pretty dissapointed when I told her those chips do not = dollars.

I've been in this situation.

Then you have to explain the whole tournament format and they usually still don't understand.

Talking to people about poker is like explaining the movie The Matrix to someone who never understood the concept. You ever met a ****** that didn't understand the Matrix after explaining it to them 20 times? I have.

Look at it from your mom's non-poker perspective... you got $500 from nowhere without depositing anything. For all she knows you could just as easily wind up owing that much.

It's an incredibly uninformed and unimaginative perspective, but I applaud your mom for making absolutely no assumptions about something she knows nothing about, vs the hundreds of other people our members mentioned in this thread who make consistently incorrect assumptions.

That happened to me.

My wife understands poker. Not how to play it, but how the thing works as far as making money. As I'm mainly a SNG/DON player, she never sees huge numbers of chips on the screen.

I final-tabled a 2,200-player MTT, and she got all excited and forgot all she knew about poker when she saw the number by my chips. I had to tell her that no, I can't win six figures playing in a $3 tournament.

I just totally lost it and starting laughing out loud at this. I can totally see some of my family seeing me with 6 or 7 figure stack in a tournament and being like, "cash it out now!!!"

i've stopped mentioning online poker at all to my family. i'm 20 and whenever i'd bring up how i was doing i'd get one of 3 responses:

1. you have a gambling problem
2. but how much did you lose?
3. you should cash it all out now

tried explaining the concept of a bankroll to no avail. i have about $100 online, don't play too often, up ~$150 in total.

How I explain tournaments:

This number just represents the amount of playing chips, see there's no dollar sign right? Players get paid according to how long they maintain their chip stack above zero. The tournament ends when 1 player, the winner, has every chip, and he gets the highest price obviously *show the prize structure*.

2/2 people understood it, 1 young person and 1 dad

Strangely enough, I've mentioned playing poker to a number of people recently and have yet to get a single stupid question or statement. Maybe the people I associate with are uncommonly level-headed.

When I started to win little on micro stakes I started bragging around to friends.... I wish I never did.

First question I get nowadays: HI how are you, How is going poker?

and obv: I have a friend who plays online poker too, he plays six tables at the time and won 3k in a tournament. you know him?

I have 2 points to add to this epid thread:

1) At work I let slip that I play poker fairly seriously. I had to spend about an hour explaining in the most basic terms the concepts of skill and variance and how it isn't purely a game of luck - needless to say it mainly fell on death ears. About 8 of the guys forced me to start up a poker night once a month. Well 6 months later and I still havn't finished 1st, but managed to cash EVERY time. Nevertheless I still get the same old 'if it's not luck and you play so much how come you never win'.....*sigh*

My most recent one this week I pushed on the button, shortstacked with KJ...got called with K6...6 hits...cue cheers from everyone at the table...apparantly this 'proved' poker was a game of luck. Geez.

2) Just 10 minutes ago my mum walked in whilst I was looking at my pokertracker graph. I thought, why not, let's show her I'm not just some degen gambler and show her my nice profit line (nothing amazing, just NL10 and NL20). She seemed to be taking it all in and understanding what I was saying...then when I had finished she turned round to walk out and said 'you got more chance of winning the lottery'....WTF?

Wtf does she mean by that Unless she means it's easier to make 10M$ in the lottery than on microNL which would be true, that comment makes extraordinarily little sense

EDIT: In fact she may also mean that your probability of winning the lotto is higher than what others have, so you should buy a ticket - because you're on a heater. Reverse gamblers fallacy you know... Or because you're good at poker, you're obviously good in other gambling games like lottery too or something
