The next day I show up for the lunch time game and the guy who asked me for my screen name is going on and on about how he watched me win in a few hands what we all make in a week. He'd gone online that night and found me to watch me play.

The rest of the people are the table looked at me like I have a severe gambling problem. A few seemed to be impressed, but I got a few "how can you possibly gamble with that much money?" and "aren't you scared you'll lose and go broke?" It was very uncomfortable.

Since then whenever I've mentioned anything that involved me spending money (like purchasing a larger house, getting a new car, going to Hawaii, etc...), my co-workers will say things like "Good run at poker, eh?" It's annoying.
yes I have people tell me all the time that this is unreasonable and I can't go on like this forever. and I try to tell them that it is no different than running a business or sales. I have been told by family members that I have a gambling issue because I tell them I still have to put in my 40 hrs a week. I try not to talk about it much, but everyone is so nosey. "How much did you win today" and this and that.

People still telling me to go get a job where I have to work for someone else making much less money and have to clock in. I mean before this I was doing sales and making more in less time than the job my family wants me to take. It isn't so much the poker that scares people it is the jobs that aren't hourly rates and you know what you are going to get. I worked for a couple months making 13/hr for 40hrs/week. I hated the job, and made less than the sales job I had prior which was commission and I worked less than 30hrs/week doing that.

I mean I like what I do and although my local B&M only supplies 1/3NL I still do very well in that game. Better than the sales job in less time than that even.

That is my mother, even when I was doing sales it was, "what about insurance" I mean don't you know MOM that you pay for insurance. It isn't like your employer is giving it to you free. There may be some perks of through your employer but not quite the difference I get for working for myself and not having to be there @ 8am every day if I don't feel like it. Not to mention the pay difference.

Back in january, after I had a very good december, my best month ever, after a night drinking with my brother and a girl he'd been seeing for a few weeks, we get to the house and somehow that topic came up and she was 100% certain I would lose it all, and wouldnt even listen to me, just non-stop hassling, I had to leave the room, it was quite silly, I didnt go busto like she said, wow this has been an epic run-on sentence.

When people ask me what I do I usually say "Online Investor".

When they ask me what I invest in, I say "Myself" then do a jack off motion and pretend to throw sperm on them while saying "BADOW!".

I've never really had any follow up questions.

Nits. The answer. "Fifty percent of the time." then quickly grab a coin, flip it, and say "Heads!".

No matter which way it lands Say "sorry man it didn't go your way." shrug your shoulders and say "That's Poker." like on TV.

Lastly you say "You can get that $300 to me by the end of the week."

To hard to explain, they think it's gambling wich it is. But they don't understand the concept of long term and stuff like that. Plus when you tell them they think you have a gambling problem.

If they say that "poker is not productive for society and what if all people were poker players, everyone would die of hunger."

Say that it's the same thing if everyone would be athletes, that doesnt make sense because theres no world where everyone would do the same job because we need others too. Explain that poker is just like football or hockey, majority (audience) is having fun watching and paying it and the professional players make money out of it. In poker majority is loosing players who play for fun and professionals make good living out of it. And if they want to ban poker for being counter-productive for society then say that watching sports and drinking liquor is as counter-productive as poker and as fun as poker to some people.
I would be ecstatic to become a poker pro, but I do think that poker is not productive for the society and that it's a bad thing (only problem I have with poker, not enough though to reverse my aspirations). Being an online small to medium stakes grinder at least (which I have realistic potential to become) is not comparable to proffessional sportsmen, noone will watch you play, noone will benefit from it in any way.

However, obviously I'm just being a nice guy, the reality is most people really don't care wether or not they're being productive and people are grossly unjust if they single out poker pros given a variety of other jobs that are 100% unproductive, but are even respected (stock traders are the one good example I can think of).

Stock traders really are in every way a very analogy to poker players. I think I'm going to start responding with "would you say that to a stock trader?" when someone asks me stupid questions or delivers idiotic preaching.

First of all this thread is about whether to tell or not to tell ignorant people about poker or maybe which way would be effective. So this thread is not opinions about the morality of poker. I want to clear my point since not everyone seem to get it.

"I would be ecstatic to become a football pro, but I do think that football is not productive for the society and that it's a bad thing."

Sounds stupid? Well..
You buy football ticket, watch the match and receive 1 part of fun as a payment for your brain. Professional football players gets your money.
You deposit to poker, you play like a dumbass and get 1 part of thrill and 1 part of fun as a payment to your brain. Professional poker players gets your money.

Whats the difference? How can you not get this?

I mean if you want society where everyone must be 100% productive, then I dont know man.. maybe get a time machine and go to nazi germany?

As I said majority of the poker players are loosing players who play FOR FUN, if you compare them to people who watch football FOR FUN, I dont see a difference. And whether the winning player is high stakes professional, mid stakes grinder or someone who plays for extra income as a hobby there is always the loosing player who gets he's FUN for playing, as the same way sports fan gets he's FUN for watching the match. So the halo where the players stand in is not relevant here.

Well actually stock traders are productive, since they invest to some company which may have nice business idea and the company with the invested money can make it happen.
