Good question....trying to think how to reply in a concise post, I have a lot of thoughts on this area.
The simple answer is that I enjoy it. Specific things that I enjoy related to judging:
1. Being in a position of authority where I can do my best to arbitrate the right way for the participants. I'm pretty old fashioned when it comes to my beliefs that there's a right and wrong way to do things.
2. Investigating suspicious things, which allows me to use my computer and forensic skills/background, to either vindicate someone that's innocent or bust someone that's guilty.
3. I've always enjoyed the way that the poker community handles trust. Many times over the years, I've had people trust me with access to large sums of money (the largest amount by someone I hadn't even met in person yet). Although I would never steal a dime from anyone, it's nice to get to demonstrate my trustworthiness as an escrow.
4. It's one way to stay active in the community, especially since I haven't played seriously in a year.
