I am against waste.
I am against oppression.
Ok, I agree with most of that. You're all-right.

Vegan, this isn't an issue of my understanding what you're saying. It's an issue of me thinking you're either misinformed or wrong.

Its super hypocritical for vegans to pass up a normal burger and then go buy a vegan burger. Im glad you actually see that. We make fun of you cuase its really funny and easy but I think most people here respect you for actually acting on yuor beliefs.

Meh. I wouldn't respect someone who refused to go on an around-the-world cruise because he believed the world is flat and was thus "actually acting on [his] beliefs."

veganmav's beliefs aren't that idiotic, of course, but they're in the next neighborhood over.

And also, you play a lot higher than most of us.

and you probably have a lot more money than all of us, because people like me spend five dollars on disgusting Dunkin Donuts smoothies.

I'd rather eat a vegan ratburget out of the trash than drink another one of these [censored] things.

I respect a person who can stand up in what they believe in, but damn your belief sure do suck if your rummaging through a dumpster to get food.

I just don't think I'll ever understand vegans

Re: Veganmav eats his food out of the trash: discuss

side note to all these posts.

I grew up the poorest of the poor.
When we ate out of the trash because we had to.
one time when I was 13, and not quite so poor but still poor, my uncle in mexico came to me crying, asking me if i could give him 20 thousand pesos (i think)(which was like 6 dollars at the time i think) so that He could have food for the week. I knew he didnt have enough money to eat regularly, and I obviously gave him what I had.

It's things like those that haunt me someitmes.
When I win 10k playing poker, I am sad that I live in such a world where lots of us make so much money playing poker, and waste it on other things like fancy cars, or neclaces, or watches, when our brothers and sisters don't have enough food to eat, just to stay alive.

I don't think that I could buy any of the stuff in this thread where people brag about their luxuries. I think that I couldn't live with myself if I bought some of those thngs. Yes it is nice to have stuff, and we shouldn't short ourselves. I still have a car, a place to stay, I play soccer, and I bought soccer shoes, I sometimes buy some small luxuries like vegan ice cream, or a good book, but as long as others are still dying because they dont even have enough food to eat, I think that we should limit our luxuries.

That is the kinda the point of me responding to all these posts, and being vegan, and eating out of trash, and talking about this.

It's just, let's please not waste so much, let's please not spend so much, let's try to limit our luxuries, and if you aren't willing to do these things, can you at least not make fun of someone who is trying their best to do these things?
thanks.

i am not gay.

just so its clear, veganism and dumpster diving are mainly un-related.

I just happen to be someone who is pretty much both.

rummaging through dumpsters isnt really that bad, i may post pics sometime

well i dunno, i am not sure i wanna argue this point if you believe so strongly, but i think it would be obvious that I would no better on this case, just because I spend more time around trash. I mean, some of the places I go to know that we dumpster dive, and leave the food sepearte from the trash, in their own bags, and on top.

It can be dirty sometimes, but obviously we check, and if it is even close to being questionable, we err on the safe side and dont eat it.

It's not the vegan norm to get their food out of dumpsters. Most either rock farmer's markets or overspend on food since it's such a small market.

as I said above, I am already giving a lot of my money away, to my family and friends in Mexico. I am also trying to make the +EV play of keeping a bankroll so i can move up stakes so I can help more people, while at the same time satisfying my conscience by giving what I can for now. FWIW I have probably given over 20% of my poker winnings to others and spent less than 5% on myself, and saved almost all the rest.

I am sure you are a dumpster expert or at least more knowledgable then me. Please post the pictures you have in mine if you think you can sway me. If you're surprised that I (1)think I know what a dumpster looks like (2)don't want to eat out of them, you have a lot of learning to do I guess.

Can you answer my question about why you don't give your starving brothers money if you feel so sad?

yeah a lot do that, but i have a vegan aunt who does most of natural mexican style cooking with rice and beans etc. and she does fine.

Vegan cooking doesn't have to be that expensive, but if you want meat/dairy analogs, it can quickly become expensive.

I'll think about geting some pics, although its quite a task cus i dont have a digicam, and when we go dumpster diving we try to be as fast as possible, and not draw attention cus of cops/workers.

And read the post a few above where i explained about giving money away.

umm, I think of myself as a utilitarian of the philosphical sense.

I think being a poker player you could understand why I wouldn't give away too much money.

I want to prevent as much suffering as possible.

At this point if I gave away much more money, I couldn't play the stakes I play because of bank roll issues.

In the long run I can prevent the most suffering, by keeping a large BR and moving up/ playing high stakes.

It doesn't make sense to give away more than I am now, because I would have to move down in stakes.

Like I said my goal is to prevent as much suffering as possible.

Re: Veganmav eats his food out of the trash: discuss

This thread just blew my mind. Vegan, I think it's very respectable that you have such strong beliefs and continue to act on them, even when you could easily sell out. Cuple questions:

1. DO you get sick often from the food you eat out of dumpsters?

2. Why did you choose to be Vegan after surviving a childhood where every scrap of food, no matter whether it was meat, cheese, etc. was eaten? Do you think it's at all hypocritical to be so picky now with your food?

3. Why don't you use some of your poker money to help people back home, and then spend a little on yourself, instead of saving it all up and not doing anything with it for fear of feeling guilty?
