its more of a statement on how much waste there is in our society that one can live healthily just from other's waste.

also it leaves almost no "eco-footprint" or something. almost no negative impact on the environemnt, and almost no drain on resources.

also it saves money

and its lotsa fun!
I haven't read this entire thread, but if you are seriously eating out of the trash when you don't have to, you're a friggin moron.

Check back with us when you catch something like hepatitis and deal with a chronic bout of fatigue for years. You'll be singing a different tune then.

If in doubt, Google it...

I paid him in the SATISFACTION OF A THREAD WELL-READ

It's not that wierd of a bump since it's a 2nd-degree connection from Georgia's sticky

I agree it isnt at all weird to see it bumped- you just have to go deep into Georgia's sticky to find it and apparently nobody had in over three months is all.
Without calling shenanigans, something strange is afoot at the Circle K.

Tryptophan is a helluva amino acid.

Hmm... I wonder if anyone got their turkey out of a dumpster yesterday.

Veganmav,

I think you should look into food not bombs. They need more passionate unselfish people and less I wanna do something cool hipsters.

Also I think dumpster diving is kinda of stupid and just arranging to pick up the food at the store is much better and safer. This is also a better idea to get more people involved by taking away the trash stigma.

I understand that meat can go bad and make people sick(so it is a bad idea) but I find it kind of hypocritical for food not bombs organizations to pass over non vegan foods and only prepare vegan for the homeless who aren't vegan.

Re: Veganmav eats his food out of the trash: discuss

veganmav, this is not meant as an insult as I agree with most of your principles, I just like my luxuries too much to make anything of it (hypocrite yes, but oh well). (side note: I have 6 pieces of furniture from the local dumpster in my apt right now. I actually look in the dumpster almost every day by my house, but not for food really.)

Anyways I wonder why you want a farm for yourself? If your bigger goal is to help others, wouldn't it make more sense to continue beating 30/60, 50/100, 100/200 for a very nice hourly wage and donate that later, instead of building your own farm and devoting most of your time to just producing food? If I were you, I would spend my time playing as much poker as humany possible with plans to donate it all later, meanwhile either getting fruits/veges or whatever from the grocery store or paying friends to dumpster dive for you; you yourself say you actually leave food in the dumpsters b/c there's so much. I'd assume it probably takes about an 45 minutes to go dumpster diving. Why not pay your friend $4-$5 bucks for the food he gets dumpster diving, then play poker during that time. You'll still be not generating any of the food waste, you'll be giving some money to your dumpster diving friend, and you'll be earning more $ for your overall goals of helping mexico or whatever.

Re: Veganmav eats his food out of the trash: discuss

I guess my main point is, if you're goal is to be a philantrhopist, the best method IMO is to take the warren buffett approach. He lives relatively frugally and spent his life doing what he does best: earning money. If you have potential to earn LOTS of money, giving away money too early is a big mistake IMO. You seem to already grasp this concept to a degree (with regards to only giving away 10k of your 100kish bankroll) so you can still play the higher limits and earn more money. Now imagine that 10k that you gave away was invested with something like a 3% annual return after taxes/inflation. After 50 years, it'd be worth about 44k now. Now you can help 4.5 times as many people assuming the money you spend is proportional to the people you help. Does this make sense?

Imagine if Warren Buffett decided to donate almost all his money at the age of 40 instead of age 75. His benefit to the world would be completely dwarfed.

I just feel like you have to do what you do best. Your biggest asset to society will not be slowly eliminating waste consumption by dumpster diving. A much more effective way to help society in your situation is to play as much poker as humanly possible, learn about investing, and when you're old to donate it all after you've had a chance to let the money grow.

Imagine this scenario, Warren Buffett is a freegan, he spends 1 hour a day eliminating societys waste by dumpster diving etc. Now his hourly rate is really really high, so all that time spent dumpster diving really took away a ton of earning potential which in turn, harmed many many more people that it helped.

Most of life can be measured in EV, even if it's just charitable work, make sure you make the best decisions possible.

Over dinner tonite with a couple of 2p2ers, this thread came up. Upon discussing it further I remembered something about VM's trip to Thailand:

In the entire time he stayed with me I never saw him buy food. He kept producing all of these little bags of vegetables and fruit, though there were no vedors for these things near my home.

Whenever we would eat, we would invite him, and he always declined.

...

(as a side note, a meal in a Thai restaurant is in the $1-2 range)

Patrick, were you dumpster diving in Nana?
While I was in Thailand, I did eat out of the trash, but I also bought food sometimes.

Vegan,
Do you find playing poker to be immoral, or less moral than other ways of making money?
It's not immoral, but there are definately better ways to make money. Teacher, doctor etc.

This is awesome...def trying this one.
no...this is called stealing. how does this have anything to do with not wasting?
true. this is still wasteful, but it's a survival skill and it works if you are homeless or whatev.

People have different reasons for eating out of the trash.

I don't do this one.

Even when we go dumpster diving, almost every single time we go we leave more than twice as much perfectly good food as we take.

There just isn't enough room in the car/refrigerator/house.
(and so we leave it for other dumpster divers who frequent the same dumpster, or we will call our dumpster diving frienids and tell them to go get it)
i was with you until this point.

so when you go dumpster diving you*usually* bring with you stuff that you would have normally eaten but instead decide to put in a dumpster for other dumpster divers some of whom are your friends?

why not simply eat your food and let your friends dive? or dive and give your friends your food directly?

why bring food to a dumpster w/o the intent of actually throwing it away?

maybe im just missing something?

Barron
We don't take food with us.
I mean, there is so much food already in the dumspter, that we can't take it all out, so we leave more than we take.
Is this clearer?

i do measure many life things in EV.
I often do not go dumpster diving because there are good games.
I generally only go dumpster diving if there aren't good games, or I am on tilt/not playing well or whatev. Cus it is obv -EV to go dumpster diving when there are good games that I could be playing in.

About farming, I hope to farm once the poker games aren't very profitable any more
