BTW, I respect you for going with your belief.

You create less waste in more than one way: Not only does your special eating habits create less waste and resources, but you also take money from big wasting fish at the poker tables, thus reducing their spending.

I fear the day the freegans take over the poker world....

This thread was absolutely hilarious for the first page (99 posts) and then it became lame

a variation which is not as cool is
u can call up and order pizza half hour before they close and not pick it up.. then get it out of the trash.

it works
B: i
Isn't that the same as ordering the pizza and paying for it? The pizza restaurant uses the same resources when you order it and buy it as when you order it, don't pick it up and then take it from the garbage can.
right that's why this variation is not cool.
its pretty lame.

I don't do it.

Ok... I don't do this on a regular basis. I -have- however eaten from trash receptacles. If you know when the proper places close and about what time they throw out their 'leftovers' than the food you get is the same you would have gotten if you'd ordered that Double FatAss burger with cheese at 11:59 when they close at 12. Nothing wrong with it at all. But a lot of people think otherwise.

Now, I'm a fatass, don't get me wrong. but waste? BK sells Quadruple bacon cheeseburgers! With [censored] DRESSING on them! That's farking ridiculous. So some dude eating an order of breadsticks out of the trash when he -knows- it was just throw out and is still good is dirty? How about the slob with grease running down his shirt from his [censored] Double Bypass Deluxe?

Oh, and if you do pastries at all, ddamn but the Krispy Kremes in gas stations are a goldmine. Most of the drivers just bag the donuts up, and if you hang out they'll let you snag them right off the rack between the door and the dumpster. So your donuts are a day old. boohoo. (note, however, this will make you a fatass like me)

Dumpster diving for packaged products?! Completely legit. Now to be fair, in most places the stores are -required- to throw [censored] out when it's dented or unlabeled. Regulations. "Can I see your papers please?"

Of course, dumpster diving is good for other things. I know one guy who built 3 perfectly good Schwinn bicycles from parts in dumpsters. They'd throw the whole bloody bike out because of a dented wheel. So it's got a big line of red paint on it now so people will be less likely to snag it from the dumpster. Pathetic. That never stopped someone. He's got -2- fully functional canoes found in the same manner. Sporting stores are you friend. Now if only they'd throw out ammunition =P

Anyhow, I don't eat from dumpsters cuz I'm a lazy fat American, not because it's dumb. I've been seriously pondering it again though since reading this thread.

Hey Mav --

I think I'm 2+2's other resident high-stakes vegan (I play NL). I have to say, I like the way you kept a level tone throughout this thread.

My "footprint" concerns me quite a bit -- I don't own a car, but I do take a lot of flights, buy imported veggies, etc. I'm sure I'll never end up dumpster diving (my bro used to do it, but I was never as excited about it), but we're definitely focusing on incorporating more locally-grown veggies into the diet.

I didn't know much about the "freegan" movement until now.

heh I just read this thread, thought I would contribute.

Evan is right, seems your philosophy is built around a faulty foundation, also, like El D said, it sounds horribly ineffective.

sorry to hear about your childhood, but I think you should, perhaps, do a little more critical introspection on your beliefs and why you have them.

Veg,

I think this is pretty awesome. mad props to you. it's like a millionaire still riding a bike and then eating poop off the street to work to help the environment. very cool.
You're like a BBV artist.

Vegan,
Do you find playing poker to be immoral, or less moral than other ways of making money?

I think it's worth noting that even though dumpster diving does nothing to aid the environment or fight greed/other, the fact that he doesn't purchase items that support greed/other is what makes the difference.

For some reason, there's people in the thread who don't really get this. Higher level thinking, you serfs.

Even when we go dumpster diving, almost every single time we go we leave more than twice as much perfectly good food as we take.

There just isn't enough room in the car/refrigerator/house.
(and so we leave it for other dumpster divers who frequent the same dumpster, or we will call our dumpster diving frienids and tell them to go get it)
i was with you until this point.

so when you go dumpster diving you*usually* bring with you stuff that you would have normally eaten but instead decide to put in a dumpster for other dumpster divers some of whom are your friends?

why not simply eat your food and let your friends dive? or dive and give your friends your food directly?

why bring food to a dumpster w/o the intent of actually throwing it away?

maybe im just missing something?

I just read this entire thread and I have to say that it was fantastic. A very interesting read and one that has made me really think about a lot of things. I really respect you for your ideals and what you do about them. Keep doing what you're doing.

Im pretty veganmav owned you all. This thread is a prime example of how most of the guys in HSNL are d-bags and only see the material possesions in life. I don't think I could have held my cool as long as you did. I don't agree with ur ways but ill definatily give u ur respect.

I read it as that there is so much in the dumpster that they can't take it all. They *leave* it there for others, not drop off other leftovers. Of course, who knows.
