The first time me and my mates ever played at Uni, we had a tournament in our front room between about five or six of us. No chips involved, just hundreds and hundreds of pennies on this little table. None of us started out with the same amount of money (or even knew how much we had in front of us), and I kept a carrier bag full of more pennies and two pence pieces under the table to bring out when I was running low on my original starting amount. Did this quite a few times before someone said 'it isn't really fair that you can just get more money out in the middle of a tournament, we should probably start with a set amount you know'.

Even after setting some preliminary rules, we'd then start a tournament and post the blinds in the standard manner. We didn't realise that you had to actually decide whether to fold/call/raise if you wanted to enter the pot pre-flop. So we'd deal cards, no-one would put any money in (apart from the blinds), everyone would check around and we'd deal a flop. Family pots ftw!

first time i played poker was with some friend in a home game. literally 4th hand i played, i turned a royal flush. started to play online immediately, and thought it was rigged cause i didnt make a royal in the whole first week... after 2 years, finally made one!

I thought I was a huge baller because I would always win the 6-9 handed tournaments we had in halls. I distinctly remember reading super-system one day and then spending the evening doing stupid things and saying 'it's not stupid, it was in super-system'. I actually won a fair amount of money from those tournaments, normally £5 buyin with buyin refunded for second place and winner taking the rest. Was aghast that my success in the live arena somehow did not transfer well to the world of online poker.

In terms of online, I must have deposited about $300ish before I finally stopped losing it all. I didn't really take screenshots of my wins, I took screenshots of me being dealt interesting hands. I actually might have one saved somewhere of the board coming out QQQ - obviously I was amazed at this at the time.

Standard thing for me was to take screenshots if i got dealt the same hand at two tables, (100% of tables played) or the flop was the same.

Or if i shipped a big pot, or lost a big pot when i got sucked out on.... Insta-screenshot.

and also, i read how you should play like 22/18 ( i had pokeroffice!) but i couldnt get my stats better then 30/11 ! i couldnt imagine folding a suited hand, from any position! And i'd hate it when people raise when i already chipped in!

Deposited 25$ onto Ladbrokes and played in the nittiest way anyone has ever played the game. I didn't play anything but pocket pairs and AK and only ever raised with JJ+.

I still won from the get go though, thanks to HoH.

despite my friends recoomndation was too scared to play 1/2 nl at the borgata since i thought they were all good and would fleece me

started out playing limit 1 tablng for 16 hours straight my first day will lee jones book open in my hand.I lost 18 bucks and was pissed. I also got kocked offline with KK and h ad no dq protection which cost me like 9 bucks. Party wouldnt give me the money and I promtly emailed them to curse them out.

played every freerollon pacific

1 tabled 2 dollar sit and goes

finallyed sacked up and entered a 16 dollar 2 table sit an go and won it on my first try- like 150 bucks

when i was playing .5/1 limit my friend went to 1/2 and i told him to be careful with his bankroll

whored every bonus possible, making about 3k a month for 4 months playing break even poker

the first time i played "nl" was with 2 of my friends
we played atleast 50 hours the first week, 5 dollar buyins, with 10 cent 25 cent blinds

played one of them in a heads up tourny, there were 4 clubs on the board, we each had a club (the ace was on the board) and we had to call the 3rd one to ask if it would be a chop since we both had an ace high flush

thought my friend was crazy for playing the 25nl tables on party because he could lose it all at once

Watched TV Poker and got hooked. Organised a tournament amongst friends who were all as busto as me which meant it had to be NL5CD with pennies for chips/stakes. Got heads up and decided to bust out my secret tectic learned from the WPT (go all-in pretty much every hand). Lost and was genuinely confused as to how my opponent had defeated such a fiendish plan.

1998: Freshman year university. Never played poker before. I think Rounders had just come out, a bunch of us watched it in the dorm lounge. "Lets play a game of poker!" A few of the guys had played before, and we clumsily started playing. Pennies through quarters as chips, played at face value ($5 buyin would be considered quite large...really just meant you had a bigger jar of change).

The dorm management banned us playing in lounge, so we moved our nightly games into my room. I had a double room to myself, so we would play on the unused bed. Like right on the sheets. You needed like 2 couch cushions to make an adequate height seat.

To be honest, i dont recall the skill level of the game (obv it was horrible, but we sucked equally, so it was a lottery).

After a month or so, we needed something new. It was 3 months into freshman year and we (the poker players) were getting considerably less tail than the rest of the dorm. Coming to the conclusion that spending every night playing cards on a dorm bed was the largest impediment to any of us getting laid...do we stop playing cards? NO! The brilliant idea is to get the girls on our sister floor to come play in our game. This was excellent idea. Why?

One of our new players is really hot, with huge boobs. Always, always, always she wears very cleavage friendly shirts. Us perv notice that the act of her putting chips into pot provide A+ views to anyone across the bed! After some surreptitious brainstorming by the guys, we decide to encourage her to sit up ON the bed, ie the 3 seat. This increases the quality of cleavage viewing greatly Of course she understood what was going on, but was cool with it.

It was no coincidence that with her playing, the attendance of our games picked up in the following weeks/months. After a while, we would have TWO games running in my room, one on each bed. The new guys were there for the boobs not the poker, and for the first time in my life, i realized i was significantly +EV. Who knows, maybe we had even improved in our coins-based poo-flinging of the previous month.

Me and 2 of the others really got into poker after that. We would have strategy powwows and stuff, and really began to get good. By the end of that first semester, the 3 of us were playing 4/8 LHE at the casino. And winning not insignificant amounts of money. By graduation, we beating live 10/20, and this is about when the internet started, so started getting into that too.

The 3 of us graduated with degrees in engineering (me) and economics (both of them). None of us decided to join the rat race. 3 poker pros, and 3 wasted degrees lol. Its been 10 yrs now

Cliffsnotes: Noobs in dorm try poker, enjoy it. Use large breasted girl to encourage even worse players to play in our game. Discover that you dont have to be great to beat poker, you just need to know best ways to beat worse players. Epiphany spun into 3 reasonably well paying poker careers.

Beat: Got nowhere sexually with said girl, despite putting in a good effort Actually that whole year was pretty much a write-off, lol. I guess i consider it worth it though. Got my game together sophomore year Alot easier when you got poker monies to spend.

Double Beat: I think this may be my longest post ever. But it brought back great memories typing that all out.

Amazing thread!

Ok, before I learned what holdem was I thought poker=5card draw and I learned the game from watching maverick.

Later I learned playing holdem from reading the sklansky book on small stakes limit games and started playing limit, obviously losing $30 of my original $50 deposit the first day.

Played $5 SnG's, then started playing $10 SnG's, when I won about $200 I genually thought I could go pro with this before I obviously lost it all again.

Went to my brother's house one day who already was a BIG winner (he had like $400 winnings then), and we started playing 25nl which was the most balla thing I ever experiencend. At some point we had to go allin and I was like Are you sure! That's like 20 euro's your betting (dollar was actually worth something back then)! It's your money, are you really sure?! OMG A 50 DOLLAR POT WOW!!! (now I am a 5 figure winner and he is a 6 figure winner)

I remember a couple of years ago having a sticker on my monitor reminding me to only play pairs and two high cards (and only raise aa ldo). I had $200 in my bank account, $3000 in party poker and was 3 tabling full stacked 5/10nl... How I didn't bust I will never ever ever understand!

I lived in LA, and I had been playing .50/1 online for about 6 months so I decided it was time to give live poker a shot.

Not realizing the existence of Commerce, Hustler, Bike, HP, HG, etc...I woke up at 6:30AM on a Saturday (I was so excited I woke up without the alarm) to drive 90 minutes to Pechanga to play a the Saturday morning $15 buyin tourney.

Won $120 bucks...once I got back in the car and looked at the cash again I was so excited that I had to stop and lean back and shut my eyes and wait till the excitement passed before I could drive again. I was 23.

After dominating the 15 play chip sngs on party, I decide it would be a good idea to play $150(?) dollar tournament at the Hard Rock. Bubble after limping a8 with 7 bbs and calling a crai with middle pair.
