Terrible Beat or Terrible Play? Terrible Beat or Terrible Play?

Was playing 1/2 Live cash last night. Guy in middle position raises to $6. Guy on button raises to $18. I call the $18 in the small blind, initial raiser folds - 2 to the flop.

Flop comes Q 9 4 (rainbow). I put this guy on a premium hand hoping he has KK or AA. I check the flop, he bets $30. I just call.

Turn is a 6. I check, he checks.

River is a 7. By now there is no possibility of a flush, I assume he missed his AK and will probably check since he has to put me on an overpair to the board or AQ. I throw out $100 making it look like a bluff while still hoping he has AA or KK and will make the call. He calls and flips over 58 off suit for a straight.

I've never regretted slowplaying that badly in my entire life. Should I have check raised the flop instead of just calling? I feel like I played it terribly.

You don't say what you had. I'm assuming that you flopped a set. Dump 44 pre unless everyone has >$300 in their stack, and even so, what's your plan with it if the original opener 4-bets to $45? What's your plan on any flop multiway that doesn't have a 4 in it?

99 seems right. QQ you might want to at least think about a 4-bet from the blinds, but that's debatable.

You setmined and hit it, so get paid. Checkraise the flop. You think $1/$2 live players are dumping AA or KK overpairs or TPTK on the flop?

Sorry,I did have QQ. 8 10 is the nuts. He told me he just called because he feared I might have the nuts. Whole table laughed.

Good point here and thanks for the input. Since I put him on AA or KK I should've bet on the flop, or check raised. I would assume he would've folded but who the hell knows.

58 is the nuts on a Q9467 board? Believe me I didn't even think of a straight at the time whether it be 810 or 58 the way he played it.

For once i agree with Ex_Matt. You completely butchered this and played the hand like a fish on level 0 thinking.

OP, it's obvious that for some reason you didn't want this pot. It's pretty clear from the way you played it that you didn't want it.

But now that you thought about it, you decided you wanted it after all. Since you can't have it you decided to come here and complain about it. Is that about right?

Look within, OP. There is something within you compelling you to divest. Perhaps at heart you're a more giving person than you act in your daily life and your subconscious is seeking some balance. Or maybe you feel some guilt, like you are undeserving of what little success you have.
