I just got back into South Florida from Louisiana after 5 days, that was a long week with the drive, especially since I couldn't do more than 65 on the highway being loaded down.

As far as immediate business goes, it definitely drops off for a month at least, and then people start to want replacements for what they have lost, and nurserymen have all the stuff in at their place cleaned up. I know a fruit grove in Fort Lauderdale that is still cleaning up, but he can't keep enough trees in stock. There is still debris lining the roadways, piled up and rotting. Not sure what the wait is, but they said it could take 8 weeks on the West Coast. I don't care, there are people out there that need real help, but hurricanes can really bring out the worst in people. A lot of guys will drive to a hurricane landfall area with a truck and chainsaws and gouge a lot of anxious homeowners on cleanup with no license or insurance. This is classic Florida, though, and it wouldn't be the same state if someone wasn't constantly trying to run a shady operation to make some money on the side.

Going to Miami tomorrow and I might buy a new truck, if all goes well I should be back, relaxing at a real house by Wednesday and can get back to writing out more of the story. I hate to keep people waiting!

The Incident - Part 2

As the small female figure emerged from the now totaled Chrysler 200 and sort of wobbled her way in my direction, I realized that she was not any real threat, but that didn't shut down my adrenaline and the fact I had just downed a 16oz Red Bull. I was strung out and on the edge, and I was now the threatening one with the gun. I went back to the car and put away the gun and saw Nicole was conscious now, it must have just been momentary. She started to get out of the car and wandered around without any real intention, as did the lady out of the Chrysler. Nicole suddenly got back in the car complaining of her neck, and I decided to approach the lady. She was in her mid-50s, skinny, and what appeared to be your average West Coast Florida resident.

"I'm really sorry, I didn't see the light - is there any damage to your car? I don't think there is any to mine."

"Yes, the back end is smashed in, I'm pretty sure my girlfriend is injured too." As I was talking to her, I could tell something was off - she seemed a bit wobbly and her thought process was kind of slow. I couldn't smell any alcohol, but even in my state I could tell she was on something. She continued to ramble about it not being a big deal and I told her that the police would sort that out. She proceeded to get very upset and say that we didn't need to get the police involved. Normally, I would agree with that statement, but the only way I was going to get my car fixed was through a report. As I called she walked down the sidewalk seemingly concerned into the darkness, another odd thing that led me to believe she wasn't all there.

"Do you need an ambulance?" the sheriff asked, and I heard Nicole complaining of pain, so I told them yes. After a few minutes a Florida Highway Patrol car showed up and told me to stay put, and went down towards the wandering woman. The ambulance arrived a minute later and asked if we were experiencing any pain. Nicole happily got up on a stretcher and knowing her hatred for hospitals, I knew she was in real pain if she was willing to get strapped down. They asked me if I needed to go as I was talking to the FHP officer, and when I realized I would have to get strapped down as well, I told them I would drive there. The officer was clearly favoring us as he talked to the lady shortly then told her to stay in the vehicle. We were talking about her condition and he was going to get a special drug officer out to check her for a drug DUI. I gave him all my info and what I knew of what had happened, and we started talking about general stuff such as working for FHP, his duty gun, and what I did for a living. He told me the FHP had a poker game on a certain night and immediately visions of Mike McD and Worm at the police station getting the **** kicked out of them came to mind. Finally, he turned to me and said,

"Dude, you need to go to the hospital."

"I will, I just wanted to make sure you had all my info and my recollection of the accident."

"Yeah, but you should go now, your girlfriend is there and you should get checked out. You may not know you are injured and it'll show up in the next few days."

On that note, I drove over to the hospital somewhat paranoid that I was injured and to see Nicole. The hospital in town is pretty small, and I just walked in and they saw my car pull up all ****ed up in the back, but seemingly running fine. They asked if I wanted to be seen, and I then realized this was going to be at least a few hours for an ER doctor to come in and run some tests. I didn't want to lie in a gown in a hospital bed unless I absolutely had to, and after seeing Nicole, I decided that the growing pain in my neck was just going to have to wait. She was moving around fine, but she was definitely in pain, and the MRI showed some herniated discs that looked pretty bad. They wanted to keep her overnight, but she had been in enough hospitals and did not want to be restricted. The condo was only a half mile away and we figured we would go in when needed. They did give her a healthy prescription of Percocet, which I knew she wasn't going to take, so I figured I would hate to see this go to waste and went to the 24 hour pharmacy that was a 30 minute drive and get this thing filled.

On my way over, I got a call from Tim - he was fighting with Willy about money and they wanted me to come in and deal tomorrow. Although I told him yes, the following morning my whole body was sore, especially my neck and back. This opportunity to take the spot that was rightfully mine in that game was there - Fish was okay with it, he knew I was there for the money and it wasn't a loyalty thing. The first hour of dealing cards went by okay, but after that, my neck, back, and eventually my fingers started locking up - I wasn't going to be able to deal for any significant period of time and had someone fill in quite a bit. I was missing out on a lot of value, and the same thing happened at Fish's game that weekend. I was due for an MRI and this accident was becoming a real thorn in my side. The following weeks became progressively worse, I was dealing slower, and even though most of the players were sympathetic, they wanted to play cards.

I was going to have to give up dealing, at least for a while, and find another means of employment.

Nothing bad really came of not getting checked out, but as of this writing, I am waiting for the lawyer to get a final number from the settlement. It definitely has been way too long to the point that I told my lawyer not to call me unless she had an offer ready for me to sign. It should happen in the next few months though.

TST, still loving the story! Thanks for continuing to update. You need to get compensated for how many people have signed up here just for this thread.

Question: My girl and I are going to Universal soon. You've talked a lot about the dog track you play at and also the Hard Rock. I know the Hard Rock is a nice drive away from Universal, but what is the closest poker room to Universal? Thanks again.

Thanks man, I do enjoy doing this, I never thought about getting compensated but its okay, maybe in the future with some book I decide to do.

I have been from SWFL to New Orleans, back to Miami, then SWFL and back to Miami again. I picked up a teardrop trailer and new truck, I will have to post some pics of my travels. If I bring my teardrop I get to stay on a farm in the Miami suburbs and its pretty sweet. Just got back late last night so I will try to update tomorrow.

Hey man, Im sorry I didn't see this, and if you are still going to Universal, the closest room is going to be the new one in Orange City, which is about 40 minutes Northeast of you. I have one friend that went there and said it was very nice, he is a mixed games player but does play 5/10 regularly when mixed is not offered. Daytona Beach Kennel Club is another half an hour further north and has good action. You can also head to Hard Rock in Tampa, which will be anywhere from an hour to 2 hours depending on traffic around Disney. Traffic in Orlando is so dynamic and unpredictable because of all the theme parks, but don't try and head north/east in the morning or south/west in the evening would be my best guess.

I have been in Miami staying on a farm about a week every month, and have another trip to Louisiana. My client bought out the nursery I visited last time and on top of a nice commission, I am getting paid again to move it. I may have time to play in the Panhandle on the way back, not sure because I will have about 40k in plants just in a minivan. I hired Ken from the story to help with transport, and Nicole is coming too. I will try and get some pics and some poker in, right now I am just run down from all the driving to SC and back, LA and back, Miami and back 3 times all hauling cargo or evacuating. I just want to pass out for a week to catch up on sleep to be honest. If I get a good day off where I am feeling energetic I will definitely get more writing in.

Another Trip To Louisiana

I am heading out on a second trip to the same destination in LA, but I will be going to Harrah's New Orleans most likely the first night, which would be tomorrow night, if anyone is in the area. I was also offered a few games along the way, and wish I could go, but I have Ken, Nicole, and a friend in tow and only one car. If anyone wants to get in touch, PM me and we can go from there.

Pain

The days following the accident were a little bittersweet. The thought of suing the **** out of this dumb drunk lady were filling my mind, and at the same time, the pain started to settle in. Over the next few weeks, I was able to deal at Tim's house a few times, and at Fish's house the game ran much slower, and the rake was not as big of a deal to him as it was to Tim at his game. I found myself frequently having to take breaks, asking people to bring in bets closer to me, and my competency as a dealer was going downhill. A few days after the accident I found myself at our family lawyer's office, my sister had been in a not at fault accident a year before and she did a pretty good job. I also made my own visit to the local auto accident, a real Dr. Feelgood, and he was basically willing to prescribe anything that wasn't over the top like Oxys. The all too familiar burning sensation on my neck and upper back from my motorcycle accident was back for some more action, and the Norco I was taking was helping me forget about my current situation. I was laid up in bed most days watching Breaking Bad or Narcos on Netflix, and even though Nicole was more hurt than I was, she was making food, or at least going out and getting it. I was fairly depressed, sluggish, and becoming a slob. I had a Toyota Corolla as a rental until they sorted out the damage on my car, and it just didn't have the fun factor that the Sti had. I even requested a manual, and they had nothing in their fleet - thanks Progressive.

As I saw my bank account slowly start to dwindle in the following weeks, I knew that I needed a plan before the numbers started to spiral out of control. I talked to Fish about an arrangement where I would take a certain amount of the game for more management responsibilities, but what I had was what I was going to get, and I would need to make up my dealing with something else to keep a fair partnership going. Tim and Rhett weren't getting along, but Rhett had paid a ton of money for half of this game which was mostly funny money at this time anyway. My slowly growing business in the vape industry was making a little money, but just not enough. The market was saturated, and making a name for yourself in this neck of the woods was just not going to happen - all the big names were in larger cities and I wasn't going to move for something that just wasn't my passion.

I considered getting back into the world of plants, and though I had bought some seed and small plants, I had nowhere to put a nursery. The returns on a business like that were years ahead, and I was looking for the now. One night, in a Norco haze, I just realized that the answer was right in front of me.

"**** it, I'm not going to just sit here in this condo anymore and watch One Tree Hill all night Nicole, I want to go to Hard Rock." I told her to take a shower and get in the car. I thought she was going to resist me in this, but she was happy to go - Hard Rock to her was like going out on the town. The rules for her coming along were that I would give her $20 for having a few drinks, and she would have to pay her own way after that. Between the gas cost and her money, I knew that my hourly wouldn't cut it at 1-2, so it was going to be 2-5 or 5-5PLO. Was I rolled for 2-5 or 5-5 completely on my own? Not really, but it wasn't going to stop me from trying. It was season here in Florida and as I checked Bravo, the lists were packed. When I got there, they had died down a bit as one of the Winter Poker Series events was dying down. As I got on every list possible, I ran into Dustin and my other tournament poker friends. He and Dave had started to explain the barrage of bad beats they had taken to get knocked out away from the real money, and I wondered if I would ever hear a real bad beat story again. Was I getting too jaded from the game? I didn't feel the passion that I once did, and it could have been the Norco, or just me being in a sub par mood to play.

Also, thanks to my euphoric state when on painkillers, my dates may be off by a few weeks as to which hands happened which time, but this was to the best of my recollection.

I was called for 2-5 first, and decided that I wanted to embrace a little less variance that day. Besides, the 5-5 games were clearly playing bigger this evening with the average stack at 3k on a 1k buyin game. I decided to buy in for 800 and had top up chips if needed. As I sat down to the table, I instantly recognized two faces - one was a legit tournament pro, and the other, well that person claimed to be a pro, but this person was known to have gone broke multiple times in his/her career and would be staked by the significant other. The rest of the table were unknowns, and my image was somewhat known by the pseudo pro. The first hand I was dealt in the cutoff and peeked at AK and raise 2-3 limpers to 30, and the legit pro was short stacked and went all in for 120 total. Two limpers called the 120 and I decided to just shove to go heads up with dead money in the pot. Both limpers are clearly pissed and fold and I am heads up against 1010. I hit a K on the turn and he is sarcastically saying how well I played the hand. He glances over at the pseudo pro and they exchange looks like "look at this donkey" sort of thing. I mentioned something about 20 big blind stacks being for tournaments and suggested he try his luck in one of those as I pull in a 500ish pot. I could tell he wanted to lunge across the table at me but knew the consequences of that would not be favorable. He leaves and I continue to play with only one "pro" at the table. I will go into more of my experiences with the pseudo pro at another time, but the rest of the night was relatively uneventful, and I found Nicole around the center bar taking to some people with a glass of wine. I think I cashed out up 550 on that session and I felt like I was getting a little bit of traction in my financial situation, even if it were short term.

On the ride home, Nicole started to mention to me that she needed to babysit for this guy Chad's daughter. Ever since I knew her, she had talked about how this guy was so great and it was a tragedy that the mother was a drug addict. Once I hear stuff like this I just start to drown it out. Before I moved to Florida I would never hear about this bull****, and since I have been down here it seems every week I meet someone new that has kids with multiple baby daddys or moms. At this point I got curious and started asking her a bunch of questions about how they met. I knew the answers to most of the questions, but was looking for her to slip up and tell me something knew, because someone doesn't just randomly babysit for other guy's kids without some history with them. She swore they were just friends, but she was a little tipsy and I figured I might get a different answer this time.

Finally I baited her and asked, "So how many times did you guys hook up when you were together?"

"Only two or three times, it was no big deal........."

I didn't say a word. I knew that after 30 seconds or so it would register in her brain that she had been caught in a lie. When she did, she started making excuses, and I don't even remember all of what was said, and frankly, I was starting not to care anymore. The ride home became quiet and I wanted to just drop her off at a gas station, but she had her car at the condo. When we got there I told her to pack her **** - this may have been overreacting, but if she was lying about this, what else was she trying to hide from me? She had been there till 2am some nights, and I had trusted her, I am not the jealous type. The thought of me having wasted almost a year being cheated on made the rage come out. She swore there was nothing, she begged, but what was she begging forgiveness for? I knew her past, that she had been abused by exes and others, and I wasn't looking to be abusive but I had to have some self-respect. I told her to get some of her stuff and go home to her family, or to Chad. That I didn't care where she went, I just didn't want her in my presence. After what seemed like an eternity, she took some things, through them in the back of her Camry, and drove off.

Usually the condo had some kind of noise going on. Nicole liked to sleep with the TV on, so I had a pair of sunshades for my eyes. Also, the window AC unit was usually on and was like a small engine running, but it was a little chilly out so it remained silent. I laid there in bed curious if I had wasted away yet another year of a relationship like I had back in 2009. It was only after taking another Soma that I finally gave in to sleep around 530am. I remember hoping Nicole was mentally suffering while feeling bad for throwing her out, scared she was going to get in some accident as she always hated driving at night. I knew that I really loved her, and as a result the pain of being lied to like this set in deep to my psyche.

You don't say!?

All I'm saying is the beginning had some intrigue and action, but latest cliffs are
* Back hurt, can't deal game that's doesn't bring in real money anyway
* Watch Netflix, contemplate a real job. F that.
* Man plays poker, uninteresting details at 10
* Girl is tramp

I demand highlights, entertainment. This was just depressing. Same damn story happens 10,000 times every week somewhere.

I understand it wasn't the most exciting chapter. I wish I could say that I walked away from the car accident Terminator style, banged three chicks in the condo while watching Scarface and drinking Dom P, but it just didn't happen. You will see, however, why I put this particular piece in the story.

^^^ Agreed, chapter was fine and true is true. maybe that newbie can start a thread as Trollstoryteller.

Besides, if theis ever gets optioned into a movie, this is the "hero is in a dark place" about 70 minutes in. Music is getting ominous, how will our hero survive? Maybe the moody instrumental as hero is driving at night down a lonely street.....
