Flop: AKQ, all the same suit as the 10.

Turn: J - same suit as the 10, so of course I'm losing the hand to a Royal Flush. Pretty standard in this spot.

River: The last A!!! BBJ hits and I collect tens of thousands while only losing a $400 stack!!

Lost the hand, of course - but won the most money!!

When I wrote this thread 8 years ago there was no such thing as a Bad Beat Jackpot. Now that there are BBJ's clearly the answer is that if the BBJ is greater than $125,333, never fold a pocket pair until the turn, and if you make a set by the turn, clearly never fold that pocket pair till the river.

I am new on here and to poker and im sure your math on this is exactly right however im a gambler. How about we meet up and we deal out 500 hands allin pre flop for $500 each hand you take KQs and ill take AA. Im sure you wll end up way ahead but like i said im a gambler so it sounds fun. Ill even come to wherever you are to do it.

This is why you should only play suited pocket pairs. Because suited hole cards give you a 4% advantage, and because it's a pair you move the decimal point over once for each card, thusly:

.04 >.4> 4

Add that 400% advantage to the 2 outs and you have 404% chance of winning the hand.

Why doesn't everyone know this?

Guys, first of all, pocket pairs vs overcards is NOT a coin flip match. Most of the time pocket pair have advantage of 1 to 5% pre flop. Just use your favorite tool to simulate and take your conclusions.

This is a HUGE advantage, for example in cash games, over some 100s K hands. Just do the maths, how much it will cost.

I deal with quantitative models and Im used to consider diferences up to 0.001%. When I hear poker players talking about coin flips when one player has 1 to 5% advantage over the other player, it makes me laugh, all due respect.

I respect the fact that some guys may have some sort of fetish for overcards, just realize that pre flop this is minus EV. Even pocket deuces has tiny advantage over AKs.
