That’s awesome, Nat. Offers are also open for anyone who happens to be in the area this winter and wants to visit the program (I’ll be the driver 4-5x per week as well as the overnight chaperone.) For the most part, they are good peeps and I truly enjoy volunteering with the program.

I got a good perspective last year when I spent 9 months as a nomad. But I always had an out. At any point I could scream uncle and rejoin “normal” society. Pales in comparison to what many of these guys go through. Also great to see when they pull themselves out of the ****.

They run a bunch of shelters on Long Island and also provide a variety of service for people living in poverty. The program I work for runs during periods of extreme weather (and every day from November 1 - March 31). We pick up homeless people at specified locations and bring them to designated sanctuaries (church, temple, Rec Center, etc). They are given a place to sleep for the night, a hot meal, breakfast and a to-go lunch. Clothes/jackets/shoes/etc are provided whenever possible. Many of the folks in this program either can’t or won’t get into “standard” homeless shelter. And many simply prefer it.
