Best times I've had there were out drinking with Japanese colleagues. Are you working with a group? Ask them if they want to go out to Karaoke. You don't get up in front of a big crowd like in the US. Each group has its own screen, so it's more personal, and they usually have a good selection of English songs.
By yourself? It's a lonely city. Maybe Shinjuku just to get lost in the giant station then come out for the Blade Runner night cityscape.
