I was honestly wondering when this question was going to be asked. Now that I am at the office I can type WAY faster...so here goes.
Back in the stone ages, AKA the moneymaker era, me and my roommate at the time were playing cards with some friends of ours. Most of those games were crazy gambling card games like screw your neighbor, 3 card poker, 1 card poker etc. Then the boom happened, and all of our degeneracy started to focus on hold 'em.
Every weekend we would get together and play hold 'em. Sometimes 1 table tournaments sometimes just crazy cash games. Then, we wanted bigger so we devised a plan. We would have 10 months of tournaments. What we would do would take 10% out of the prize pool every month and put it aside. Then, every tournament winner would be invited back in November to play a single table "Table of Champions" to decide the best of the best and we would divvy up the prize pool that we took out to pay the whole table with the winner getting a trophy and a nice payout. Everyone else that played and didn't win would also be invited back because we had a huge BBQ and cash games going.
Now, we didn't NEED a name for the tournament but it just sounded like a good idea at the time so one of the "founders" came up with an idea. Lets use all the founders initials. So, the J.P.C.S. tournament was born. And, because these games were being run out of my house I was stuck with the nickname Gypsie because the games were at Gypsies house. (J.P.C.S.)
