I'm a video game streamer who started playing poker for fun again in Dec 2014. Previously, I was playing lowstakes in 2009 and making ~1.5k profit in SnGs.
When I started playing again last year, I started with 180s and getting a 1st + 2nd finish quickly. Soon I wanted more and switched to 6 max hypers, playing on the highest stakes on a marginal bankroll.
I lost like $1.5k, then received $500 for Christmas which I ran up to $7,000, starting by shipping a $500 hyper and ending with shipping a $52 hyper MTT for $2.6k (all without any knowledge of modern day poker or ICM/nash strategies etc).

I ended up cashing out the $7,000.
In June, I wanted to play poker again. I deposited $1,000 and immediately ran it up to $3,000, again with high stakes hypers.
When I realized I got platinum star in 2 days, I tried multitabling for the first time (to get supernova in a week). I went from 2 to 6 tables on the $100 lvl. I kept getting crushed, and the more I played, the better the regs adjusted to me and exploited my several leaks.
I deposited again and signed up for some MTTs. They have been going incredibly well,
I was chipleader in both the $82 hyper and $215 supersonic simultaneously.
In the $82 hyper, another big stack moved all-in to me from the SB. I called with Q9o, thinking he is bluffing and he showed up K10o and won the pot.
In the supersonic we were down to 30 players from 1.3k. I was chipleader and already thinking about what I'm going to do with the $30-40k for a top 3 finish. I didn't get a good hand a few hands in a row, and went down to place 5/28. I felt like I had to do something now, and
decided to steal the blinds, using the tight image I had from not playing any hand recently. I went all in with 69s from the CO, SB wakes up with I think AJ or JJ and won.
My stack was decimated, I doubled up my stack one more time but eventually folded just into
18th place for $2,200.
Feeling bad about the way how I went out in both tournaments, I checked the top 3 players of the supersonic (fuddebuf, theclaimer, rounder63). They were all seasoned pros and 99.95+ on OPR with 100k's of winnings, and it made me feel bad about me and my playstyle for the first time.
I reached my peak at $9,000 profit after the supersonic and
decided to play some $500s to reach the magical number $10,000 profit and cash out again.
For the first time ever, I started
running really bad in the $500s, losing all games. I also made mistakes with table-selecting, as I didn't know some players who turned out to be insanely good (like readas_reada, who called down a 3-barrel from me with A high).
With my last $1,000 on my acc I signed up for a 1k hyper. I told them in chat to not play too well vs me, as it was my last money on my account. Down to 3 players, I was on the button with 1,300 chips, SB had 500, wtfgmon in BB with 1,200. I went all in with Q2o, SB folds, BB shows an ace and folds. He added: "I know you're bluffing, next time I'll call". That scared the **** out of me, however I somehow managed to
ship the hyper and was at 4k again.
Then I went to $109 MTTs and more high stakes hypers. I
kept running bad in the $500s, losing 10 in a row and running $4k below EV, for the first time (I used to run heaps above EV in the past).
After I lost all my money, I deposited $2,000 from my remaining winnings to play 2 $1,000 hypers. I thought I had to win eventually again.
There were 2 tables, with 5 people regged - DaNuts90, wtfgmon, LeSmit, Joroy70, belthazorrrr. I knew all of them, and that this lineup was exceptionally sick for a high-stakes hyper. I wanted to dodge them, and wait for weaker players. After nothing changed for 30 mins, I lost patience and just signed them both up, losing my newly deposited 2k quickly.
With my very last $1,000 of poker profits on my bank account, I deposited again to play another $1k.
And I was broke. Busto. Bankrupto!
Desperate, I deposited some of my own money to try lowstakes. After playing $7 and $15 games,
I realized that I can't even beat those. I was frustrated and sad.
But I wanted to be better. I started studying the game, and looking into newer materials. I learned for the first time what nash-ranges and ICM are, and realized that calling with 23s often was a mistake.
I used a variance calculator for $200-$500 hypers (those I have been very profitable in) and gave myself an ROI for -10 %, which is probably standard for a fish/rec on those levels and what I had in my larger samples of $60 and $100 hypers. I found out that even with -10 % ROI, it's very possible to run up several k of profit in just a few games, like I did.
For the first time I realized, that I was just super lucky all the time.
*
I thought I had an edge in high stakes hypers, because people are multitabling - truth was, even if you force them to play 40 tables simultaneously and have me play on only one, they would have still made a lot of profit vs me.
*
I tagged many SNE (e.g. ukupnikk, komisz, shabalinvlad etc)
as fish, because I looked them up on Sharkscope and saw losses of -50,000 to -300,000. I thought those are rich people from RL who just pump all their money into poker to get SNE for fun and that I can win easy vs them.
* Not a single one of the players I was playing against told me that I was bad or making wrong decisions. However, there were periods, were not a single $500 hyper would be up. As soon as I would sign up for one, it would fill in a few seconds (same with $100s).
* The more games I played, the better the regs adjusted to myself and outplayed me in any situation. That coupled with my stupid busts in the deep run MTTs were the reasons why
I became frustrated and went on to tilt away everything on $500 and $1,000s. I entered a
degenerative state where I would re-deposited money until all my funds have been used up. I was chasing my losses but just ended up losing all I had.
* Losing my full profits/bankroll and going bust in a single day surprisingly made me feel really bad and sad. I thought it wouldn't affect me, as it's just my previous poker winnings anyway, but I was really affected by it and couldn't think straight for 3 days.
After making that realization, something people have been telling me for a long time, but I just ignored (I thought they were just jealous of my profits and I didn't understand that variance was hugely in my favor),
I studied the game and started on $3.5 hypers again. For the first time, I was
consistently beating hypers over a few 100 game sample and had a very good red line. I was outplaying the $3.5 6-max regs (apart from Brnas87) and laughing about how it must have felt to the high-stakes regs when playing vs me. Went up to $7 9mans and did okay there too, as well as decent finishes in low-stakes MTTs.

Today I got a
2nd place finish in the Hot $11, for $4,100. I played the tournament extremely well (e.g. bluff-catching with A high on FT) and was able to see all the
progress I have made as a player in the last few weeks (I will upload a video showing the last hour of the tournament).
I don't regret anything that I have done,
playing high-stakes hypers for 100s of games was a thrill and it was a pleasure to see all the sickos there playing, even if I got outplayed many times without even realizing it. I definitely learned a lot from playing them as well which helps me in the lowstakes, something were I currently belong to. I still watch high-stakes hypers from time-to-time as observer, as I do miss them a lot, but I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to play them again (the people there are just way too good).
That was my story. I will be
streaming again from August 15 (a mix of video games, poker and talking shows) and hope to see some of you guys there.
