my first degen story EVER. just lost like $600 plus on poker, and decided it would be a good idea to play bj on any software i have. tried players only, but that didnt work. downloaded bodog, but couldnt figure it out. so stayed with the tried and true absolute blackjack. tried to play the "double up on every loss" method, so started at $5 and doubled that till i won. was fine until i lost at the $500 level. uh oh. last bet entire bankroll was all in on a double down (doubled for less). won. whew. thought "that was easy, there is no way im going to lose 8 times in a row again!" got back on the horse and was makin money! oopz! got to the $500 level AGAIN (how the f is that possible?) won some crazy double downs or something again, and ended up winning $1000. im not even sure what heppened, coz im really drunk right now, but i added the amounts several times. im not really a degen at all, in fact im the opposite, but this is my degen'est moment. also, degen stories shouldnt have a happy ending, but i was twice within one bet of losing my entire $3000 absolute bankroll.

I've already told a couple stories about myself ITT but this "happy ending" quote made me think of a friend of mine.

I was fresh out of undergrad, in my 1st job. My boss was a new guy, young, aloof, kind of a hard ass and very serious. We became friends when he learned that we both had an affinity for gambling. With him you would never have guessed it. He was upper management and was definitely the buttoned down corporate type. I assumed he was making the g money. I had a bookie and he didn't (being new to the area he knew no one). He would handicap baseball and wanted to bet $5-10 per game. My bookie wouldn't take such small bets so I usually just bet his picks for the minimum and let the chips fall. He would bet almost every game every work day. He (we) never won much and never lost much so it wasn't a problem. Turns out he wasn't bad at picking games. I learned that he was a college athlete, having played baseball and football at a small college.

When football season rolled around this guy just went nuts. He was like a kid in a candy store. He would call me into his office on Friday and we would handicap football all afternoon. Again, he placed small bets on numerous games on Saturday and Sunday. Seldom did he lose anything significant and he was mostly being eaten up by the juice. And then . . .

In the Fall of '87 (I believe) the NFL was on strike and was using replacement players. Several weeks into the season my boss comes to me and tells me he has an inside tip on a game and wants to know how much action I can muster for him. Obviously I'm extremely skeptical as he's never bet more than $10 on a game since we started. He tells me, in complete seriousness that the New Orleans - L.A. Rams game is fixed, that he knows someone that knows it for sure and that we can bet any amount that my bookie will accept. At this point I'm sure I'm being leveled so I tell him if he wants to place a large bet I want him to front the money to me just in case. He invites me to his house on Friday afternoon after work - a payday - and says he going to have the cash.

When I get to his house it is nothing like I had envisioned for someone in his position. His house was tiny and a mess, he had 4 kids, his wife stayed home and it was obvious to me that they were not in good shape financially. We go to the bank and he cashes his paycheck (about three thousand take home) and proceeds to withdraw their entire saving account - over 5 grand and says he wants it all on New Orleans on Sunday. I'm stunned and confused but I take the cash . Over the weekend I worry about this more and more. At some point I go out and buy a preseason NFL magazine and look at New Orleans's preseason roster. I find one name that attended the same college as my boss during the same time period. I assume this is where he got his "inside info".

When Sunday comes my bookie is stunned about the amount I want to put on the game. In fact, I had to split the bet up between three different bookies to get it all down. I bet 8000+ for my boss, 4000 for myself, and another 2000 for a couple of buddies that I let in on the secret. The game went off without a hitch and we were so far out by halftime the win was a forgone conclusion. We collected the following week and celebrated and all was good.

In the weeks that followed my boss became a completely different person. He was extremely cocky and started ramping up his bets to 100-200 per game, still betting numerous games on Saturday and Sunday. He started telling everyone in the office to call him "Ice" (wtf?). And he started losing - consistently. He ran through more than $9k in losses in no time. He started acting erratic, missing work, slipping off to the horse track, showing up disheveled - but always betting games and losing weekend after weekend. It became a problem between us because I knew he was using his paycheck to pay for losses and I suspected a day would come when he would be unable to pay. I finally pulled the plug on him. He found other people to place bets through and continued to lose big week after week. Eventually he was riding to work every day with a co-worker and I later found out his only vehicle was broken down and he could not afford to have it repaired. His wife was home with four kids and no car.

Eventually I had an occasion to go by his house again and it looked like they were going broke. I later learned that his wife had actually won an inexpensive car in a drawing but that they were forced to sell it to the car dealer because they were so far in debt. He tried to keep all of this a secret but they eventually filed for bankruptcy. Shortly thereafter his wife caught him with a secretary (totally NOT hot - fat and she had 4 kids of her own). His wife divorced him, moved out of state and took three of his four children with her. He moved in with the secretary and her kids in a trailer home in a mobile home park. Two adults and 5 kids in a freaking mobile home. His behavior became more and more odd and he and I basically had nothing to do with each other. He dressed like a slob and he always had a football schedule and a racing form in his pocket for everyone to see. He had become the ultimate degenerate gambler.

He did finally lose his job too, but he did get hired somewhere else pretty quickly. He and the secretary drifted out of everyone's lives and all we knew of him were stories we heard from time to time like three of his children had never spoken to him again. He had burned several friends by not paying gambling debts. I also learned later that his father was wealthy and had expected that one day he would take over a family insurance agency but that because of the path he had taken his dad gave him nothing.

Brag: I learned from this what a dead-end career I was heading for so I quit betting games completely, quit the job, went to law school and became a more respectable poker degenerate.

i played at B&M last night, and this big hawaiin lookin guy my friend and I dubbed "the whale" who spoke very broken english very quietly blew through about 900 in about 3 hours. He proceeded to get on a mega heater (i mean top 5 runs i've ever seen, live, online, whatever), and get back up to 1000. he then gets cocky, plays every hand, and loses then whole grand in an hour, tops. around 30-40 hands. reloads another 300 (300 max 1-2 at this particular B&M). tightens up, loses that in about an hour. Repeat. proceeds to go watch his friend make about 1k at 500 max, both are foreign and don't speak english.
cliffs: big foreign guy ran supernova hot for like 2-3 hours and still lost over 1500 at 1-2 in 4 hours. Can't even imagine when he "runs bad".

meanwhile, at the 5-10 1000 max game....
while i was on the waiting list, i saw a huge pot come up where some guy calls off an entire 1k stack with KQ 3 way on a board of Q75, much to the dismay of 25o who pushed him in (the 3rd guy folded after putting in like 300ish). I'm thinking wow KQ is either a pro or a ******. I sit at 1-2, meet the whale, have fun, and go to dinner.
Second session, the same KQ guy is sitting at 300 max and losing all of his money and i big bet him every chance i get (internal fist pump). At 5 10 there is some guy making business calls with approx 10k in front of him. I can only assume the KQ guy got stacked, and needless to say I am going back to B&M every chance I get. F grinding 50NL when games are this soft live/ ty degens. Slots were also buzzing as usual, facepalm.

well heres my story (and yes it has a silly happy ending LOLZ)

i played poker from about 16 at college where my degening was being known as the biggest pisshead ever, basically would go out get smashed and pass out weekly from 16 -> 18.The poker game was only ever 1/2p (uk story) and stayed small, id always tilt off a dollars worth when the game ran.

I failed alot of exams due to online gaming degening (ie not going to college), but somehow got into uni. I started uni a dream and then after a year or so i found a poker game, and got involved. I lost maybe 300-500£ threw my last 2 years at uni and eventually graduated wth a decent degree. My missus fell pregnant around the last term of uni so **** hit the fan...basically she gave birth to our son fresh outa uni, we had no jobs, and nowhere to live.

Thankfully my parents put me up and i began grinding SNGs online with my dole money, and trying to get a job. I also found a local cash game that was like an ATM machine and basically threw staking with a mate made enuff to get by. Literally winning a few quid to feed/buy stuff for the baby.

4 months passed, and no job had come, i was playing 20$ sngs on ipoker with a 500$ roll (13% ROI~) and won 5 in a row (you need 6), literally a week later i won 5 in a row, and the MOST EPIC SNG i have ever played occurs, i get HU, 5bb each, i get 77, he has KQ, my sevens hold...

i win the SNG jackpot for 85,000$.

2 years on, i have a career and earn more than my mates, and i play 1/2$ fully rolled profitably.

love this thread so much, i decided to make my first post a degen story

So, im a 21 year old business student and 12 July im going to asia (Hong Kong, Macau, maybe Mainland China) for a few weeks. I have already paid for my ticket, and i even had a little bit of money to spend there. After i paid for my ticket i had like 800 euros left in my bank account. I know its not a lot, but I am terrible at saving money for stuff; when i have money, i spend it. Although i do have a weekend job, i thought it'd be a good idea to make some extra cash. So i decided to start playing the 200NL games at my local casino more regularly (although im seriously underrolled for the game, it is what i usually play live). Two weeks ago i went and i crushed. I started with 200 and ended with a 600 euro profit. So 1400 euros is a decent amount to take with me, since im not planning to be a big baller there. But the very next night i got very greedy and decided to play in the 500NL game.

I ended up playing terribly, because i focused too much on the money. I was without a doubt the biggest nit at the table and still managed to lose most of what i had in that one night (ended up ~ -1050 euros). I was card dead and tried to use my nitty image to bluff a few times, but let's just say i overestimated my fold equity quite a bit. So after the game ended i was on the sickest craziest monkey tilt ever. I even (fake) promised myself i wouldnt go play anymore. But eventually i calmed down and figured that if i do not spend any money that i earn this month, i will atleast have a few hundo to spend this summer, which is not all that bad as everything is dirt cheap in asia. But past friday i realised that i actually wont at least have a few hundo, because for some reason part timers get paid later, much later. Monkey tilting again, especially since i've been spending 250 of my last 300 euros on partying and clothes (im such a dumb ass).

So friday afternoon, after my last lecture, some of my friends asked me if i wanted to go to the casino with them. I said: " wtf, hell yeah let's go gamble mf's". I took 20 euros of my last 50 and put it into a slot machine. I still have no f'ing clue how those things work, but i just punched the buttons and before i knew it i had 50 euros profit!!1!!11 sick life. I continued to go on a nice run, but then i lost quite a bit at the 50 cent roulette tables. Still ended up with a nice 50 euro profit.

After about an hour, we all left. I drove one of my friends (Peter) home and had some left over lasagna. Bored as f*ck we sat there. Then i suggested to go to the casino and gamble some more. I told Pete that i wanted to just put the 50 euro profit on red and hope to double, since it was "kinda like a freeroll anywayz". So we went and sure enough, i hit red and double up. Had a hundo profit at this point and proceeded to the blackjack tables where i ended up breaking even after 10 hands. I said: " f*ck this game" and went back to the roulettes table and this time i put 50 on black twice. I won both times. Felt like god at this point with 200 in my hand. I then continued to hit a few numbers and ran my money up to about 900. Pete had won about 500. I was sooo happy that i could just kiss the dealers. But....

We then decided my victory had to be celebrated, so i ordered two beers. Before we knew it we were ordering Jack Daniels like there was no tommorrow. Eventhough i was drunk, i still figured that i shouldnt be driving. So i said: f*ck it let's go party. It was around 11.00 pm at this point and we went to the club closest to the casino. Since we were early, we had no trouble getting in a bit drunk. As the club filled up we were still drinking and pretending to be big ballers, talking sh*t to girls - telling them how much money we have and that they should come to the party in my car and sh*t. We were buying drinks for even the ugliest girls around us and i was grinding on all kinds of broads. All was fine untill my buddy suddenly threw up on the dance floor and we were kicked out. I took him to my car, which was still parked at the casino. I left him in the car and went back to the casino. I started to place 100 euro bets on blackjack and baccarat. Lost more than i won, then i took my last 100 to the roulette table and bet on the date that i left to asia; 50 euros on 12 and 50 euros on 7. The dealer said: "No more bets please" and spun the wheel..................

Needless to say i lost. I lost all of my 900 euros including the 20 euros i initially started with. So now i am practically broke, with 30 euros in my bank account and no idea what im going to do when im in asia in a few weeks.
